Just finished my cam install and its starts and runs, but it wont idle at all. I can keep it at 1000 rpm with the throttle but thats about it. the cam is 230/238 on a 110. It has been tuned prior to the cam. the firing order is correct and all the vacuum line are in the right spot. i still havent re-done the valve lash but it just seems weird that it wont idle at all. It takes several cranks to get it to start and the throttle has to be half way down.
I think it just really needs a tune. Sounds mean as hell though

mine was the same exact way even had to hit the gas pedal while it was turning over to start, put a new MAF senosr in and its still running great on stock tune. sounds like u have more issues then just the tune, but that is a pretty stout cam too though so idk.

Have you adjusted the idle screw on the TB? You might have to bump it up a good bit to get it to idle about right with that cam. The main thing is probabaly a tune for the cam though, sounds like a nasty cam, congrats.

mine was being miserable about holding an idle also. since i had the battery disconnected i sat with my foot on the gas at about 1000-1200 RPM untill it re learned its idle. my cam isn't quite as bag so i'm not sure if it will work for you. i figured i'd toss it up here though.

Of course it's not going to idle well without a tune. That is way too big of a cam to go without a tune. I hope you're not running bigger injectors than the tune was for. Get it tuned, adjust the idle screw, and adjust the TPS.

thanks again, i know the valve lash is off and needs to be set again, and it will be tuned this week so hope everything goes well

The min air screw on the throttle body is not SUPPOSED to be used to set idle. BUT, with a big cam, you usually have to turn it out slightly to get it to idle.
When I installed the cam in my wifes car it would idle fine at start up, but it would stall once I came to a stop. I adjusted the screw to open the throttle blades slightly and it cleared it up. Once I got the tune from madtuner, I set it and made sure the TPS had the right voltage at idle.

try re adjusting the lash. it should have no problem idleing.
maybe open the tb slightly with the screw but you shouldn't have to do much if anything.
did you do larger injectors?
mine idled just fine with my 233/242 at first startup.

i know the valve lash is way off which is causing it to not idle and run right. Its at the tuner now and he is also going to adjust the rockers and lash.

let us know how it runs when you get it back!

i get it tomorrow but i talked to him and he said its running good but there is a slight squeek that may be coming from a lifter

I put in my cam(230/236 on a 112) without a retune and it idled fine. It sounds like the tuner got it worked out. Did you put in new lifters?

yes but now it gets heat soaked and its hard to turn over after its warm.

Post more details on that condition. Hard to give suggestions as to what may be the cause without more details.

Ok so it runs great until the temp gets around 180 ish, after that it just dies. there is no sputtering or mis-firing, it just dies. Next when you go to restart it, it cranks slower and slower everytime you try it. All the wiring is good that i know of as far as grounds and power. not leaking any fluids, but there is some smoke inside the intake when you open the throttle blades. Also i noticed that the hardened pipe that runs along the passenger valve cover to the throttle body is pinched at the elbow where it makes a 90 degree turn to the throttle body.

Fix the line that is pinched, it should not be that way. How old is your fuel pump? How old is your starter, and battery? Have you ever replaced any parts of your ignition?

Abrupt cut off after the engine has heated up makes me immediately think 'heat related'. That points to the ignition module as the first thing I'd check. This is a typical reaction of a failing module; engine runs when cool but quits when warmed up.
Mis-adjusted lifter preload, with one or more set too tightly, will prevent the engine from idling. Too much preload can keep the valve from fully seating resulting in the engine not being able to idle. Of course, there are other possible causes too.
