View Full Version : What is so fragile about the 10 bolt?

I'm building the worlds cheapest drag car. Here are the specs in a nutshell:
-Gutted for lightweight. I haven't weighed it yet, but I'm hoping for 3000lb race weight
-hotcammed LT1. I dunno how much power that makes
-T56 trans
-10bolt with 4.10's(comming soon, I don't have them yet)
What is the achilles heel on the 10bolt?
Why does it break so much?
Does a TA rear end girdle do anything to help out?
Do moser/strange axles help out?
Does a high performance differential, such as a zexel torsen HD, eaton, strange locker, etc... help out?
I'm sure I'll break my 10bolt at some point, but I wanna know if I'm gonna be throwing my money away by upgrading the 10bolt, or if I should just blow it and get a 12 bolt.

all the parts inside are smaller. and smaller usually means it breaks easier aftermarket diff's wont really do much because there still small. another problem is flex in the axel tubes. the girdle as well as weldig the axel tubes will help.
have you bought the hotcam yet? you gettin it as a kit? if your interested i have one brand new never used and a set of lifters im tryin to sell.

A 10-bolt has a 7.5" ring gear. A 12-bolt has an 8.75" ring gear, a Ford 9-inch has a (you guessed it) 9" ring, and a Dana 60 has a 9.75" ring gear. The 10-bolt also has small axles, and small tubes which hold the axles which can twist under a load, causing the ring and pinion to "unmesh" a tiny bit, which makes it easier to sheer the teeth off of the ring gear. The "girdle" that they sell strengthens the rear a little bit, but it's like putting a band-aid on a slit wrist. You will break it with a T56 car, especially with a 4.10 gear and some good tires.

Read that. The weakest point is deflection of the axle tubes, drawing the ring gear away from the pinion and breaking teeth. The next weakest point is the gear size itself, which can only be fixed with a larger rear end.

yeah, I just finished reading that. I think I'll get the LPW kit. I have a hotcam only car, and I really doubt I'm putting more than 330rwhp down. Even with an M6 and 4.10's, I think that little "bandaid" would be fine for me.

6 speed = drivetrain shock = broken 10 bolt
If the clutch is stock it may slip enough to help the 10 bolt. If you get a good grabby clutch you will kill it. Most people that buy a girdle don't use axle trusses. which may help a little but it is on borrowed time.
I did pull one 1.48 60' time and many 1.5's before mine went with an auto.

the ring and pinion are too small and pretty much chew each other apart from TQ. some have a decent amount luck with the 10bolt and some don't.
