well the cars hopefully nearing completion/in progress so i figured id start a thread now and try to keep it updated.

About three months ago i headed down to louisvile with trailor in tow to go check out a LT1 trans am
It's a 1993 black with black leather interior, only 74k miles.
the had been forsale for a long time and the price kept getting lower and lower. This is how the car looked a few years ago when it was mint.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y272/amandi01/ta2.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y272/amandi01/ta.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y272/amandi01/547313_3_full-1.jpg
unfortunately the distributor started going out on the car and the owner let it sit and the driveway and begin to go downhill
when i got down to look at it heres how it sat

http://www.cincystreetscene.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=14&pictureid=111
http://www.cincystreetscene.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=14&pictureid=112
looked like a diamond in the rough to me:bigthumb
so I stole it for $3300 bucks loaded it on the trailor and headed home
for 3300 i got a TA with mint leather int. 74k original miles and heres the mod list:
Mini-Tubbed, narrowed ford 9'' with 3.70's moser 31 spline axles and a tru-trac all with 2k miles on it, 3 Piece FIKSE 18x10 fronts and 18x12 rears, Custom front hubs with tubular control arms, Heimed linked custom tubular rear 4 link trailing arms, Heimed trackrod for rear end. Triangulated front strut bar. brand new CPT pro race 4l60, Yank 3200 stall, Flowmaster 3" Catback with cutout, Carrera aluminum coilovers all the way around, 13" Willwood slotted and drilled with 6 piston calipers for front and 12.5" Willwood slotted and drilled with 4 piston Dynalite style calipers for rear

got home and got it washed up and she cleaned up pretty well, should look good after a full buff and detail

So, with the distributor going out I pulled it of the trailor and tucked it away in the garage to decide what the plans were going to be.
a couple of weeks went by and i stumbled across a nice loking turbo setup on LS1tech.
went down and met the guy halfway in kentucky
I picked up:
Garret GT42 turbo
hot and cold pipes, cold pipes are polished stainless steel
intercooler
tial bov and tial 44mm wastegate
flowmatched precision 98lb injectors
F.A.S.T. standalone engine management with wideband o2option and 3 bar map sensor.
motor plate
water pump milled 0.25 to account for motor plate

next I had to decide if i should run it on the stock motor for a while or do a built motor.
Found a guy up in youngstown ho had a motor sitting in his garage that he bought of his friend tobail him out of a financial situation he was in.
got some details arranged and got the motor payed for. Should be a tough one built with all the best stuff.
-Callies splayed 4 bolt billet caps
-Oliver 5.85 BILLET rods,
-Callies 3.75" crank,
-8.5:1 J&E forced induction pistons
-CC billet 248/248 solid roller custom forced induction cam
-CC solid roller lifters
-AFR CNC competition ported 227 heads with solid roller springs
-Jesel shaft mount rocker arms
-Cloyes billet roller LT1 timing chain
-MSD Probillet distributor
-Ported LT4 Intake converted for use with conventional rear mount distributor
-DRM 58m TB
-MSD crank trigger setup

heres some pics of it with the old setup on it that was going to go ino a C4

heres the car with the wiring all bagged up ready to be washed.
http://www.cincystreetscene.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=14&pictureid=126
got it all cleaned up and back inside. Next we chopped out the radiator support. you can see the degreased bay in this pic too.

After the chromoly tube goes in for the radiator support, the motor plate and mid plate brackets get welded in, and the plate gets made for the heater core blockoff. the engine bay is getting scuffed up and repainted with a nice semi-gloss black.
then more work and more pics:D

Thats awesome you saved that car, the original owner had it in California, really neat suspension set up under it. I have seen that car around on the net for years now, cool to see it get built up the way it is. Really a unique car.

Great find man, I wish I would have found that but at least someone is giving it a life it deserves :)

That thing is going to be a monster. Whats the plan for it though? All out drag car, fast street car, or road racer??

I'd like to see some of the suspension parts under the rear also.

Congrats on that killer deal and killer build man

dsmawd350
04-06-2009, 04:49 PM
Thanks guys. Its gonna be a NASTY street car for now. keeping the full leather interior, stereo, 18x12 and 18x10 wheels, 6 piston brakes, no roll cage as of now. So its gonna be a street car for sure. Hoping for 700 or so rwhp on this turbo, I want to max it out. Then it's on to a 91mm :D

next time im able to snap some pics ill get some of the rear suspension.

got the plate made to block off the HVAC hole in the firewall. One we figure out how were gonna mount the F.A.S.T and MSD box to the inside of it it will be painted black

http://www.cincystreetscene.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=14&pictureid=140

motor and mid plate are bolted up to the motor and the new motor is sitting in the car on the stock K-member for the brackets to be welded to the frame. Then it's all coming back out to paint the bay, and then it goes back in for good with the Kmember with no motor mounts

http://www.cincystreetscene.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=14&pictureid=141

started laying out the FAST to get it all sorted out and loomed up/etc.

OP, you may want to reconsider putting the coil on the HVAC plate with the FAST box. For that matter, you dont want the coil wires being routed near it or its harness either.

OP, you may want to reconsider putting the coil on the HVAC plate with the FAST box. For that matter, you dont want the coil wires being routed near it or its harness either.
I talked to Cal Hartline himself, the man in the turbo buick world. He knows his shit when it comes to FAST systems and tuning he assured us it the FAST boxes are built very well to keep any kind of interference from happening, he said it would be just fine on the same plate. It's something that already crossed our minds

"The mill is controlled by a sequential FAST system, tuned by Cal himself. In fact, his company, Hartline Performance, specializes in engine building and FAST tuning, and his services are in great demand around the country." -GMHTP

Id take his word for it then... I can say however that my coil wires from the Dig. 7 to the HVC coil did not play well in close proximity to the XFI harness.

http://www.cincystreetscene.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=14&pictureid=184
gonna get everything all bolted together back in the car before we paint the bay now since the turbo kit needs a few minor adjustments so its taking a little longer than i thought.

dsmawd350
04-28-2009, 10:23 PM

only got pics of the crank trigger.DOH!
http://www.cincystreetscene.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=14&pictureid=187
gonna go up saturday and knock out the last 2 things before the motor can come back out and paint the bay : need to drop the crossover pipe down .5-1" to clear the canton C4 vette pan thats on the car. finish the radiator support and get the griffen mocked up. then its finaly the home stretch, the motor can go back in for good and wire the FAST up and do a few small things like the AN fittings and lines on the waterpump and radiator that are gonna replace the rubber lines and clamps.

well shit has been taking longer than expected. moneys been slower than it was so project has slowed down but .....

IT RUNS!

one of the AN radiator fittings is leaking and theres a pinhole leak where the fuel sump was welded on. So i've got the car back and i need to get those 2 things fixed and get it back to the tuner, its just got a quick startup and idle tune on it right now.

also the engine bay looks KILLER. all wiring is in place and the car runs but you can barely tell the car is even wired.

Well i got the radiator leak fixed. turned out to be a leaking AN hose end so summit sent me a new one free of charge. Also got the pinhole leak fixed in the sumped tank. So now she's running flawlessly and ready to be tuned. But i'm starting to get a little pile of parts i want to put on before it goes.

want to put the single plane setup on it.

also ordered a set of 15x12 and 17x7 billet specialies streetlites that im going to have the fronts narrowed to 17x4. (have to clear my 6piston wilwoods)

got a strange chromoly 5/8 stud kit ordered for the rear

another situation i was dealing with was figuring out what i was going to do as far as gauges. I completely gutting alot of my factory wiring only leaving what was needed to run the wipers and headlights. As well as ditching the stok computer as opposed to piggy backing it with the FAST. So instead of buying all autometer guages and needing 2 sensors for every engine feature i picked up a digital dash and datalogger.

Plugs right into my FAST standalone via the data port used to communicate with a laptop and displays engine RPM on the main screen and well as 6 other user selected parameters that the FAST sees in 6 smaller boxes below the RPM. and with an add on sensor i can readoil pressure as well.

I'll be able to monitor my wideband AFRs, coolant temp, oil pressure, MAP sensor for a boost reading, timing advance, TPS, voltage, injector pulse width, IAT's

as well as 120 min of typical Datalog time for 25 Channels at 10
samples/sec

thats what the digital dash i picked up looks like. the 6 boxes are selectable to any six inputs you want as well as programable to be custom labled for what they are.

and here is it in a car

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f147/Hollagraphik/page3.jpg

it also has programmable warning lights that the screen will flash for certain parameters you set. Example: id oil pressure drops below a set psi it will flash a warning screen

Now im gonna get started on stripping out all the factory wiring behind the dash that i wont be using. I've already removed all the HVAC ducting as well as the heavy rubber foam backed padding on the tunnel and firewall. Next ill go through and get rid of all the wiring for the factory guages, cruise control, airbag sensors and wiring, hvac controls, all the shit ive removed from the car basically.

Car looks great man. Can you post up some pics of your intercooler setup (how it's mounted, ect)? I can't tell if you're planning on keeping the fogs or not but this is something I keep fighting in my mind on my build is the intercooler setup.

dsmawd350
03-10-2010, 07:08 PM
im not keeping my foglights. there is already limited flow, i want to leave them open. I bent up a chromoly tube to go from frame rail to frame rail with tabs welded on it then threaded bungs on the top of intercooler. you can see it it some of the pics in here. thats really all i have ATM, nothing specifically of the intercooler

Thanks. for a second i thought my thread was invisible LOL. maybe if i call it "OFFICAL BUILD THREAD" lol hopefully get the car outside for some better pics tomorrow. the shop lighting is crappy for pics especially by the time i get done working and decide to take pics it's usually night time. I'm in love with the single plane setup it looks soo much more badass than the pics show.

Last night was just a dry fit. I got the gaskets on, distributor in and everything on for good today. valve covers back on, wiring and vaccum lines hooked back up, and i started in a few changes to the cold side i had to do for the new setup.

Unfortunately hopes to make the shootout are looking dim. It's not the time thats the problem it's the money. Ive dropped probably 2300 in the last 3 weeks rying to finish it. I still need a chassis mounted torque arm with the new th400, and money for a good dyno and street tune combo :(:(

big thanks to OldBlu and his buddy for a killer deal on a brand new never even bolted up TA
Got my shifter installed finnally along with the linkage and cable all set up properly. This was probably the biggest pain in my ass on the whole car due to shitty instructions from B&M and a shifter thats made to fit like 10 different transmissions with pulling a pin here, adding a pin there, this bracket for this, spacers for this no spacers if its this. Finnaly got it all figured out with enough trial and error.
http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=13879&pictureid=54035
got the piping all changed up to fit the new setup, fuel rails and lines all bolted up. just need to mount the map sensor somehwere now and run a vaccuum line to it as there is no longer a provision in the manifold itself.

My fuel pump went out on me right as i was loading up for tuning after the last update. sent it in and it was fixed under warranty. aparently had a bent shaft internally and was binding up.

was supposed to tune wednesday but it rained here in cincinnati, rescheduled for today and it rained again!

its running and driving hopefully take it out tomorrow for some street tuning/ cruising. spent all day in the garage today tracking down boost leaks, what a pain in the ass! started off with the car not being able to hold much more than 1 psi. the car will build up to 30+ psi now in 3-5 seconds through an air nozzle but still leaks down in about 20 seconds. ive got some more tracing to do tomorrow i know where a big one is just need to pull the brake booster line off the back of the sheet metal elbow and teflon the brass fitting seems to be leaking there.

when i took it up to the tuners voltage was acting strange. It was going from 11.7ish to 13.8 and back making it a pain to try and run a laptop in the car as the charger was hating it. the car really needed to be at proper voltage anyways to assure everything stays healtly in the tune, apparently injectors can change with voltage.

I replaced the alternator today with a brand new one as the previous one was one i got with the turbo kit and motor plate in the first place. was having some trouble finding out what it came off of to replace it. Its a 97 chevy malibu V6 alternator lol its all custom mounted with brackets and the motor plate so it was just some random peice. had to get in touch with the original owner to figure it out.

got that replaced gonna charge the battery tomorrow and see whats shes reading if its a healthy 13.5+ she should be ready to head back to the tuner

Thanks! and yeah Sean im seeing that, but i guess its a little different then a H/C car or something. virtually everything has been touched and or replaced on the things so its gonna have some bugs etc.

I scaled the car today. 3185 with 5 gallons of gas.

thats with a 12 point cage, factory carpet, stainless intercooler piping, corbeaus, factory ws6 hood, 6 piston wilwoods and 17x7's.

I figure that if i wanted to with some 15'' skinnies, aluminum intercooler piping, strange front drag brakes, aluminum kirkeys, and some other work i could dip down in the 3000lb range:claps:

Damn thats really light. My junk is 3500 at the Shootout without my bottles in the car. Do you have a weight reduction list of everything you took out?

dsmawd350
09-30-2010, 06:35 PM
and thats a turbo car too. figure take out the 40 lb turbo, 30lb intercooler, 20-30 lbs of steel intercooler piping and im sitting at 3085 how it sits.

the car is minitubbed, narrowed rear, coilovers, all tubular susension components, th400, no ac, no heater core everything stripped from behind the dash including all wiring, no radio, no hvac ducting, no air pump, no PS, manual rack. motor plate mid plate so no mounts.

If i wanted to spend a bunch of money i could do a racecraft steering shaft and grant wheel and lose probably 80 lbs, pin on hood, if i changed wheel setups to 15'' bogarts all they way around, strange drag brakes in the front, aluminum intercooler piping, ditch the stock tank and do an aluminum fuel cell, kirkeys. this bith would be in the 28-2900 lb range but its a street car so im not too worried about it :D

The car was complete and went to the tuners to see some street tuning then dyno time. We got some street tuning done on the car but every time it ran it would just keep climbing in temp and getting hotter and hotter to 220+. Not to mention the turbo that i had originally purchased with this kit took a shit and the compressor wheel started rubbing the housing. Not sure if it was just do to it being a used turbo and sitting for almost 3 yrs during this build LOL.

anyway i went and picked the car back up and decided to change some things around with the cooling system. as far as radiator placement and line routing etc. Not only because of the heat issue but because the new turbo was even closer to the radiator and lines and space was becoming an issue. I also needed enough room to run a turbo blanket.

So i got the car back to the garage and began work.

heres how it looked at that point

work will resume monday. I'm in the middle of making some minor tweaks to the wastegate location to clear the oil drain fitting and line. It changed with the new turbo. The have a couple more bars to bend up for the front end. One for the bottom radiator support and a small tube for front bumper mounting. more pics as they come

Looks great man. I was wondering if this one ever got finished up or not. How's it coming along now?

great finally got it all sorted out. started pump gas tuning yesterday. blew a coupler off that i forgot to beadroll. but very first pull on the rollers it blew the coupler @ 3300rpm and run was aborted. made 446rwhp lol.

got the coupler issue resolved and on a very safe tuneup 11:1 afr, 16 psi, low timing, 6300 rpm it made good power on straight 93. gonna rev it out to 7200 and start to lean on it a bit more.

dsmawd350

yep 446 to be exact at 3300 lol

so far its making 611@ 6200 through a th400 and 9''. 16psi, 11:1 AFR, only 18 degrees timing and pulling it out as boost rises, straight pump 93.

its a solid roller with a pretty big cam and big heads. gonna rev it out to 7200+ Next time around and lean on it a little more.

great build...looks like it is a lot of fun. Have seen any final numbers yet? With a 91mm you should get 1000+ out of it. Be interesting to
see what it does all out. Are you thinking of going E85? and or a meth kit?

Side question does anyone know what the limits of the LT1 block are? I know there are quite a few 1000hp with all kinds of ways of doing
it.

Man for 3300 that was a deal of a life time. I would have had 2 fbodies in the garage if I had seen somthing like that.

I've been thinking about it when I get the twin turbo's.

The new shop I am going with said out on the highway I should get only couple miles per gallon less for fuel mileage. Dont know if I truely
believe that. They said it is all in the tuning and out on the highway you can lean it out to 15:1 AF on a crusie. Seems a little lean to me
since it is an 9:1 AFR fuel. But might just try it to see cause I do alot of crusing but if I get low fuel mileage just might have to use reg
prem for street and E85 for the track.

Get those 60's in the 1.3 range and it'll be going 9.2's pretty easily.
