Anyone here built their own turbo kit? My motor just took a crap so I am thinking of going with a budget 355 and fabbing up my own turbo setup. But Im not sure where to start, I dont have a whole lot of money and I think the kits are overpriced. So any advice on building the motor and the turbo setup would be greatly appreciated!

If you think RealQuick's kits are over priced then you are in for a big surprise when you do a setup on our cars.

Even if you do it yourself, it is not cheap. I hope you are a VERY good welder. You need to think of all the supporting parts you need also, fuel pump(s), head studs, good head gaskets, wastegate, bov, intercooler/piping, 2 BAR tune etc etc.

FI is not cheap, I consider mine a budget build and I'm in the area of $10,000-12,000 into a stock headed/intake forged turbo 355

For 600rwhp or under and being as cheap as possible ----->

355ci forged rods/forged pistons/stock crank
stock heads/stock cam/upgraded valve springs

TC 76 F1 turbo
kncock off wastgeate and BOV
Modify stock exhaust manifolds or build a log setup.

if you are on a tight budget fi is not for you.

i would build a decent 355-383 with decent heads and a nice cam and call it a day. you will be in far less money and time.

Thanks for help. For a budget build like RealQuick suggested, what kind of total ball park price would I be looking at?

Pretty much close to what I suggested, the only thing he said different is I have a TC78, forged crank, and custom cam... so you're only looking at taking about $800-1000 off of my expenses unless you plan on doing the welding and fabrication yourself on the hotparts

The price I am looking at is for parts only, Ill be doing all labor and fab work myself.

I put together a budget kit for $1000 minus the intercooler (already had one) so about $1250. That was finding everything used and the only new thing I bought was the MP T70 with .96 a/r which I here are good till 550-600 rwhp.

That was with an fmu for fuel management and it broke the ring lands at 5.5 psi. It would have lasted longer if I actually tuned the damn thing instead we just cranked up the boost... lol.

I have since spent around $5000 building a budget engine which includes injectors, engine management, cam, rockers, pushrods, ls7 lifters, valve springs and retainer kit, arp bolts (rods, head bolts, main studs), windage tray, hv oil pump, forged pistons, machine work which includes boring, hone, hot tank, and balance and that includes building a th350 also along with all the knickknacks you will need. It can be done cheap but I would recommend spending a little extra on a good rotating assembly which you could pick up for $1500 already balanced with bearings...
