are long tube headers better that short tube? if so, why?

Better is a matter of opinion
Long tube headers will provide more power than shorties or mids. (especially at the top end)
They also hang a little lower and make running cats difficult.
They sure do make running plug wires a whole lot easier (I like OTVC)
They're also a little tougher to install than shorties, but with a few jackstands it's very doable in your driveway.
I hope that helps.
FWIW, I had Mac mids on my car and really didn't have a problem until I rode in a car
with similar H/C mods that had LTs. I swapped them out the next week LOL

Figure out what you want and make your decision based on that.
All out drag car? DD? auto-x? road racing? etc.
I'm running shortys right now for multiple reasons.
1. It's a bolt-on DD (so switching to LTs would cost me $500 and net me 5hp. $100/hp is not worthwhile to me)
2. They were free with the car when I bought it
3. My car is lowered 2" in the front so if I put a ORY on it it would scrape really bad.
Eventually I will raise the front up a bit, and when I build a engine that needs more exhaust flow I'll install LTs with it.

i thought LT would net more than 5hp?

depends on the header and the car. If a bolt-on car has shitty headers and goes to really good headers (Kooks) I'm sure 10 would be doable.
I'm shorty headers and soon to be cammed and I only expect to be about 10rwhp down from what the average full bolt-on'd hotcam'd 6 speed puts down.

with a tune, yes i would imagine youd get more than a 5hp gain over shorties...

With my Pacesetter LTs and Tune i gained 2 tenths in the 1/8 mile. So if the ole rule is 10hp=.1 then that would be about a 20hp gain. Also I had a tune before the headers then after the install i got a tune for the headers but that was also going from manifolds to LTs.
Id go LT for the power and sound difference compared to mids or shorties. Just go LTs the first time, no regrets later.

I havent seen a good reason not to run LTs unless they wont pass in your state. I had no problems running cats on mine and i still had enough clearance to clear a center-post floor hoist (6")

It is a tough option. (First post for me by the way.) I would go LT's if you did not have any emissions to deal with.
I live in the golden state (CA) so LT's are out of the question for me. If it does not have a CARB sticker then you can forget about getting it to pass smog.
I just pulled the drivers exhaust manifold off yesterday to change out a broken stud, what a pain it the ass!! It was at this time that I decided that a mid tube header will be going back on, not worth the hassle.
I do not like the way the pipes are made on the Edelbrocks, smashed at the collectors. BBK's? I am going to get the PS mids with the emissions fittings, 93 the EGR tube is integral to the passenger side air pipe.
If I did not live in CA, I would have all ready ordered the LPP and had them on.

Good read here.....mine will be a DD that isnt driven far but I have a number of speed humps to go over and no way around it. I think I may go with mids also just because of that reason. LT's are nice and the preference for power but like mentioned above, it just depends on what you want to do with it.
Good luck!
