View Full Version : Someone Please Explain to Me......

The import crowd's infatuation with "JDM" please. I just don't get it. I'm a member over on 6GC.Net because I like the car, enjoy modding our Celica, and like being a part of the crowd for whatever vehicle I'm tinkering with. But some of this stuff just AMAZES me. JDM this. JDM that. JDM LUGNUTS?? GTFO.

Right now the rage over there is the power folding mirrors, available only you know where. WTF are those even needed for? Maybe over there, sure. Actually having been there I can vouch and say they're an absolute necessity. But here in the states?? WTFE. But it's the freaking rage right now. Funnier yet, there's a guy selling a short wiring harness and the "correct" relay for freaking $50 and someone is going to buy it. I just don't get it.

Another one that really blew my mind was the interest that the dealer option cargo mat made when someone posted it. A freaking cargo mat for a Celica, but because it's "JDM" it's cool.

Now there are certain JDM things that are noteworthy and worthwhile. Lord knows I have a few. MR2 Turbo motor with JDM ecu because it's got a better timing table than the stateside ecu's. The headlights, which are KILLER, are a JDM only option. The tail lights (don't have yet but want) are much better looking than the USDM ones. Things like that. But these guys getting spun up about power folding mirrors and stupid crap like that just make me go WTF. This is across the entire import crowd population I've seen and I just plain don't understand it.

/rant. I needed to say it.

Because a large majority of them believe in shenanigans rather than the actual function of the car :-P

USDM? Wouldn't a JDM car be a USIM car? :D

I see it as "restoring". Kinda like restoring a classic to what it "was". They are restoring the import... except, well, it never "was" that.
But yeah, things like relay and wiring harness? bla. Folding mirrors... that's a cool thing that I could 1/2 understand. It's a neat "trick", and WOULD be useful in some areas. Houston, not really... Austin's parking lots are SMALL. And I drove either an S-10 or a 240z.

My Sierra has power folding mirrors, cool feature for a truck, pointless on a car. The entire ricer thing seems to be kind of fading out. The O.e seem to cater so much, you don't see these clapped out Hondas much as you did when I was in High school at what seemed like the peak in the late 90s, early 00s.

but seriously, im with the OP on this, some things i like but people spending $150 on a cigarette lighter doesnt make any sense to me (especially when they dont smoke)....

BUT, JDM fronts on integras make it look like a completely different car, as seen here. (same kinda car in third jdm pose pic)

I guess its like when every1 wears a certain brand of expensive clothes.. some people buy it just bcuz every1 else is, not even cuz they care about the brand, just cuz they want to jump on the bandwagon and be ''cool'' lol...

Yeah... When this new Fast and the Furious movie comes out... We will begin to see more rice out on the streets.

I blame that movie for the rice problem out on the streets. Theyre trying to put more muscle cars in it to attract the muscle car crowds, but all theyre doing is ruining their reputation of those cars and making the newer generation want to rice them out. I heard they put a supra engine in a mustang in Tokyo Drift or something like that. :(. If that doesnt destroy a cars bad ass reputation, I dont know what will.

Don't remember if it was supra or not, but yeah,... import motor into late 60's stang.

There is a showcar from this area that's a late 60s camaro with a supra motor.... pushing BIG HP.... but still... just wrong.
