Today was the start of my spring break and i decided to do a few little things on my car and while i had the hood opened i noticed that the filter for my intake was completely gone! It's the K&N one so its easy to see how it could have just fallen off if not attached properly(previous owner had it installed). Im not sure how long its been gone, but i dont drive it that often at college so hopefully no harm done. Is there any recommendations for how to securely get the filter attached? I am thinking about building a sort of "catch tray" underneath but thats going to eliminate most of the reason its down there in the first place. Well im just glad a rock or something didnt make it in there, i havent heard anything weird from the engine bay so im just leaving it in place until my new filter arrives. :frustrated:

A big hose clamp is all I've ever needed.
I wouldn't build a tray... it really SHOULDN'T be falling off. If you are that worried about it, I'd put a leash/tether on it, but wouldn't bother with a catch tray.

Are we talking a K&N FIPK? It was pretty hard to get mine on good. I pushed it up the best I could then screwed on the clamp as tight as I could. Then I reinstalled the lower plastic vent piece that are on the corners of the car.

It isn't attached in the best possible manner TBH. If it isn't 100% tight, it will vibrate it's way loose, and then simply fall off when you hit a bump. I guess you could make a tether for it. Sort-of like a ground strap and bolt one end to the fenderwell, and the other end to the filter itslef.

Get a comparable Amsoil filter like I did, you don't need to oil it and it also comes with a much larger lip to clamp onto the K&N "tube"

Just make sure its tight and you shouldnt have any problems with it..

thanks for the ideas, i already ordered the replacement filter so i think i might try to have it strapped to something. I know it should be good enough just tightening it, but i live in michigan and there are some bombed out roads around me that im sure could have contributed to this event.

I hung all the original plastic back on the car. I didnt really see a benefit of removing it and if I were to get caught in a storm, or splash through a puddle or something, I'll prevent hydrolocking my motor if I can, thanks.

this is making me think of how many people have taken off the plastic panel and left it off, mine is still on.

I've had mine off for uhm... almost since I bought the car 4+ years ago and haven't had a problem

mine always stayed on good until i shifted on the revlimiter on the jug...then it would blow the filter off the intake, destroy my 1LE elbow and filter lol...

Z28pr0jekt (http://ltxtech.com/forums/member.php?u=22)...friggin' thank you!

I have been looking for a part number to the Amsoil filter for ages. I am tired of my K&N falling off, and having to remove my little home-made ram air scoop to oil the damn thing.

No problem, there is one that has the same dimensions except it is longer, but if you have the fender guards on you may need to trim them in order for it to fit... the one in the picture though fits no problem

Speaking of K&N....(slight thread hijack here)....did you all hear that AEM and K&N have joined forces? Not sure if that means K&N will now have both their oiled cotton filter and the AEM Dryflow offered with each kit but nevertheless thought I'd post the latest press release info I just received. This is just filters, not electronics.

When my air filter is off, the LT1 sounds very different, like its really breathing. Running a 52mm throttle body, chrome vortech elbow, and shorties though on a stock LT1. Does that mean my filter is too restrictive? I'm running the $20-$25 dry air filter you get from autozone that looks like a chrome K&N but isn't.

That replacement filter you are running is most likely very restrictive (the knock off's usually are). But even if you change to an actual K&N or equivilent once you put a filter on it will muffle the intake sound.

well quick update, i got the filter today and secured it on. Drove it around a bit and it held on. I didnt even know there was a splash guard there to start but i do see all the mounting points for it. I was thinking maybe i could get some chicken wire/mesh and secure that where the splash guard was. This way I wont be destroying the airflow and if i buy the strong stuff it will hold up the filter if it ever bumps its way off again. What do you think?

I'd go to GM and buy a new splash gaurd.

This thread reminds me that I left the clamp off of my moroso when I had to take the elbow and cai out the other day.
I hope my filter is still on there.

-Thanks to the OP. ;)
