View Full Version : Bringing down the idle

Quick question: Is there a way to bring the idle down without a programmer? I am guessing probably not, but maybe one of you all has a secret.
Currently the car idles at 1200. I am looking at getting it down to 800 if possible. :D Thanks.

You can adjust the throttle body blades on aftermarket TB's I'm not sure if you have one on your car but if you do then it may be the screw just needs adjusted 1200 seems awful high.

I don't know what's done your car maybe the cam necessitates a higher idle and that is what your tune is set at.

It doesn't have a tune, unless you call that crappy Jet Stage 2 Module a tune...which in that case it does. But that will be scrapped soon enough.

Nothing too special has been done to the car. It has a cam, although I am unsure on specifics of it. Bought the car from a dealership and, of course, no paperwork to go with it. I can tell by the "lope" that it has a cam, and this is coming at 1100-1200 rpm idle. But like I said, no paperwork and it pisses me off.

It looks to be a stock TB. Thanks, it's appreciated.

The proper way to would be to go through the pcm.

The screw is out about 1/8" inch not allowing the tb blade to come back. Seems a little far to me. Is that screw an allen or phillips? Stock TB mind you.
If I do adjust the screw, do I need to use the shoebox method of resetting the IAC? Or just leave it as is?

Mine is a straight headed screw (Holley TB). Just unscrew it and see if that brings is down to an acceptable level. The IAC is most likely fine.

Thanks man, sounds good.

I take it I will need to loosen and move that black cable bracket that is sitting right in my way.

Do the stock TB's not have that screw? The reason I ask is because of this:

Honestly I can't remember. It's been years since I've looked close at a stock LT1 TB. And yes if you are talking about that black cover just remove it, you don't even need to put it back on if you don't want. Don't remove the bracket. If you do indeed have an adjustment screw I'd start the car and back it out with the car running. I'd shoot for 750-800RPM if the cam allows for it.

It does have an adjustment screw which is about an 1/8" out. I think that may be the reason as to why it is idling so high.
I will get to it here in a few. Thanks man, it's appreciated.
The black cable bracket is actually bolted to the side of the intake manifold right in front of the fuel rails. It seems it holds the throttle cable in-line with the TB blade. With that bracket in the way, I will have to improvise as I can't get a screw driver in there with it in the way.

BTW, nice setup you have pictured in your sig. Makes me jealous.

Adjusting the screw didn't bring the idle down at all. Looks like I will have to go through the pcm. Thanks for all the help.

Check for vacuum leaks while you are under the hood. A vacuum leak could make the idle higher than normal. I'd look for any leaks before sending in your PCM to be tuned.

First thing I checked for were vacuum leaks and couldn't find any. I do know that it has been idling like this since I first got it. I am thinking that with the cam, the previous owner had it set this high. Wish I could figure out which cam was in the damn car.

You could always try checking with Chris at Wichita dyno or with aknovaman up near Topeka. They might be able to help check your tune.

you need do make shure there in no vacume leaks first and rich running car can act like a small cam if it is loading up
