View Full Version : Pics of over the axle TD chambered mufflers?

Looking to build a 3" TD setup, but I don't want bullets or dumps before the axle.
I found a set of Hooker 3" mufflers that should work, I just don't know if they'll fit.

Anyone have pics of their setup? Maybe even measurements of their mufflers?

Hooker Headers 21506HKR
Case Length (in): 14.000 in.
Thickness (in): 4.750 in.
Width (in): 10.250 in.

Have you checked http://www.drgas.net/ ?

OutlawZ has a pretty trick setup using that oval tubing Dr.Gas sells...very sharp...yet expensive setup.

Ive got 2 new 3in center in/out...bought them for another project that I sold. Im thinking I will have to sell them to get some bullet style so they will fit under the car. Ive heard of guys dumping chambered mufflers before the axle but have to cut underneath the rear seats to make them fit. Think thats a little more work than I want to do to keep a chambered style muffer.

Sounds like you want symmetric duals? That is what I plan on doing... it can be done:

I saw a guy on ls1tech put his mufflers at the back bumper like on the new mustangs and gtos. They were flowmaster 40s and he painted them black so you dont notice them as much.

I love Grip's setup. I'm actually trying to find out what all has to be done to make that happen.
I certainly don't want to end up melting fuel or brake lines and causing a fire.
I'd probably still mount the mufflers behind the axle of I could get away with it though.

Yeah, Flowmaster makes some nice small chambered mufflers, but I really don't care for the sound.
If the Hookers don't work out, I'd go spiral or bullet instead.

But as far as positioning them like GTOs and Mustangs .... You mean where the muffler case is visible at the rear?
I don't mind that. That's kind of what I thought I'd end up needing and the Hookers are already black.

Yes, I remember seeing that one. I love the setup, but the price was something outrageous
even moreso when I found out that it didn't include the headers and that those
are bullet mufflers, not HF cats up front. Granted, it will last much longer than
the aluminized steel setup I have built.

The vertical muffler thing was interesting, but I'm using slightly larger mufflers
and being a Firehawk (Formula Bodystyle) I'm not forced into a specific tailpipe location
I think I can get away with mounting them a little lower and keeping them horizontal.
At the very worst, I'll "message" the spare tire well (but I'd like to avoid that)
Maybe an offset exit port would help? (move the muffler towards the center while keeping the tailpipe aligned with the framerail)

I was talking about the full size flowmasters not the small ones. I think you should def. be able to fit both mufflers behind the axle considering how big a crossflow muffler is that normally goes there.

Maybe if you can get them to sit high enough you could run them kind of like the gmmg catback with the mufflers on top of each other???

That's an idea, if I could get up and over on both sides, then mount the mufflers sideways and offset a
few inches so I can do the crossflow thing without having to stack them.
I saw a pic of a red bird that did that, the mufflers looked like a corvette-style
(same side in and out) It looked ok, but I can't find an aerochamber in that style.

That thread has some good info....and it doesnt look like he had to beat up his floor pan to bad to fit those. Look identical to the ones I have. Maybe I will just keep them and try to make them fit:shifty:

I wouldnt go over the axle though...just dump them off.

I want true duals but don't like how most of them sound. I would like to see how those Hooker mufflers sound and that 455 LS1 car. that looks bad ass.

What's the average running price on an average true dual custom setup including labor?

What's the average running price on an average true dual custom setup including labor?
Depends where you go and what you want to use.
You can get a cheap press-bent aluminized steel with generic mufflers for $200-300. (pic 1 (http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e146/jmontign/95%20Firebird/06_03.jpg)) (pic 2 (http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e146/jmontign/95%20Firebird/23_20.jpg))
You could also go to town and build $2100 stainless system like the 455 pictured above.

I ordered 4 180* Mandrel bends (http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/30662/10002/-1) and a universal x-pipe/TD kit (http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/30662/10002/-1) from Jegs.
Cost me about $170 total. I figure 2-3 hours labor and whatever the mufflers
you decide on cost you. Call it $400-500.

You can cut the cost down dramatically if you dump before the axle
but you'll increase cabin noise quite a bit, especially if you have removed
your rear seats and/or carpet pad. Not something I'd do on a street car.

My buddy does custom exhaust work and he quoted me roughly $700 for Flowmaster single chambers out the back in aluminized steel. He said add about another $300 for stainless pipe. I know he's charged a few in upwards of $1200 for TD's on an F-Body.

I want mine under the seat purely for the hollow, old school muscle car sound. In my observations, it seems that the closer the mufflers are to the tips, the less of that beautiful "hollow" sound comes out the tailpipes. Mufflers in the back would probably have less interior noise also if you are concerned about that (Im not).

I know he had to relocate and heat shield some lines - ive also been trying to get that info outta him for a while.

My pics aren't that good, but you can get the idea. Hooker LTs with the collector flange cutoff and flowmaster ball connectors welded on, Jegs Universal X pipe kit, 2 boxes of mandrel bends plus some laying around my shop (total bends were 4 90*s, 4 180*s, and 4 45*s) and a magnaflow dual in/dual out muffler.

I ran the pipes into the x then down the passengers side of the driveshaft tunnel then went over the axle in the stock location and the muffler is mounted in the stock location and the tips are 2OTL. I personally think its one of the best looking exhaust setups for a Camaro (the 2OTL tips)

But anyway heres some pics and the exhaust was hanging down because the clamps loosened up, I need to tack weld the pipes back together then clamp them because they keep drooping down

If you want anymore pics let me know and I'll do my best to get them for you. Oh and BTW I need to get a PHB relocator because the pipes hit the stocker quite a bit and it gets kinda annoying and I have anout 40 hours in the exhaust total, but its worth it to me because no one else has a setup like mine right now that I know of. Also I have no interior drone like I did with the dumped bullets and its reasonable quiet when your just cruising, but at WOT it sounds almost like dumped Bullets but a little tamer

I ordered the Hooker Aerochamber 11x14 mufflers from Jegs this morning.
After spending some time under the car yesterday with a measuring tape,
I decided that I can fit them by either lowering them a few inches or by cutting
away at the spare tire well (which, hasn't been used in years. Someday it may house a battery)
I also ordered an extra pair of mandrel 3" Us just in case. If I don't need them, I can always sell them later.

I decided against going over the driver's side.
There are just too many things in the way (fuel lines, brake lines, fuel pump relay)
It just doesn't seem to be worth the trouble. I'll order a relo kit from BMR today as well.

BTW, Ninety5PoloZ, I love the look of that setup.
I considered mounting the mufflers staggered and do the TOTL look, but decided against it.
I just don't think it would look right with 3" pipes.

understandable, the passenger side is definitely a lot easier. Im just fussy enough on the exhaust note that I want mine symmetric.

Anyway definitely looking forward to pics of your setup cause im always open to new ideas.

Thanks James, I always apprecaite some feedback on the setup. I thought about bumping the tailpipes up to 3", but I had a piece of 3" pipe sitting there so I mocked it up and it looked like poo. I still have a little work on the system to be 100% complete, but I couldn't take not driving it or hearing the new exhaust anymore LOL. This winter I might swap the magnaflow muffler out for a flowmaster super 40 series dual in/dual out since the magnaflow doesn't have much tone to it if you know what I mean.

I'm looking foward to seeing how you do your exhaust since I'm always open to new ideas for when I get bored with mine LOL :D

How do the hookers sound vs a flowmaster muffler? Do they have a deep sound or is it more of a mellow sound like a magnaflow.

Aerochambers have a much deeper mellower tone than a flowmaster.
No rasp and much better performance. (I've had both)

Here's a vid of what my current 3" hooker sounds like.

were ever you use clamps at make sure you get the band style that grab both pieces of the pipe instead of the crappy ones they supply in the x and h pipe kits. those kind dent the pipes and tend to not hold very well.

Ok, finally got this done last week.

The answer is; YES, you can do dual chambered mufflers over the axle.
But to use something as big as hookers requires some BFH work.

Here are a few pics to illustrate what we did and the clearance.
I still need to paint the tips black.

Better clearance than my old single 3" catback.
Driver's side muffler tucked up into the stock location
Passenger side muffler installed between the wheel well and Ttop well.

Total materials used
- 1 Jegs X-pipe kit (one 45* left over)
- 4 Jegs 3" Mandrel Us
