I have a 96 z28. i would like to swap in a 98-02 trans am dashboard and gauges. the structural sheet metal between cars and the interior have very few differences. would this be a hard conversion? I have the skills to swap it out and change any necessary wiring i just want to know if anyone has done this and if there are any hidden problems one might run into.

itll fit in there. The only thing your gonna have to worry about is the plug for the cluster. I belive if u swap in a cluster from 96 into urs without the digital readout youll b fine but if u want that then the plug might b differnt like with the LS yrs. Other than that it wont b to bad.

why not just do a 97-02 Z28 dash? aren't the late model camaro dashes 95% the same as the T/A ones?

I'm not really sure, but I think the trans am dash has the round vents which he might want to use for gauge pods... to my knowledge, even the newer camaro's don't have those

trans ams have the round vents yes. The LS1 camaro dash just has 2 vents up theres with the HVAC controls mounted below the radio

you cannot used the '98-'02 cluster,'94-'97 is the only way.
i did the camaro dash swap in my '96 still very similar,i used a dash from a 2002,cluster from a '97,cluster plug from a '95 TA,column and wheel are '02 pieces as well.

sorry bro the cluster from a 98-02 will not work properly in a 94-97. the fuel guage will not read since it requires a different ohm reading from the tank, the tach will not read correctly, they run off of a 4cyl signal.
it takes waaay more than a repinned plug to use an Ls based cluster!

if the cluster ends up being the worst part of the swap i can deal with leaving it alone. I am partial to the round vents(with gauges of course.) Thanks for all the info!

Just use a dash from a 96 Trans Am, its the same layout and style as the 98-02, they just offered different colors

I know this is an older thread, but I finally have my dash.:finger:Now all I need is a cluster. Is the only difference the mechanical odometer in the 94-96 where the 97 has the digital odometer? I have decided to just use whatever will be less work.

I thought the 97 would because it is still set up for the LT1. I don't think it is an issue though. I am working on a deal with a member here for a cluster and I believe it is a mechanical odometer.

Update time. I removed the camaro dash out this weekend, and I have started to clean up some of the wiring. I have taken a bunch of pics that I will post up tonight. I have cleaned up the donor dash out of a 97 Trans Am and I will probably start installing that later this week.

Sorry I never got around to posting pics. I took a bunch, but they came out crappy. (I suck at photography. lol) The trans am dash is in and everything is wired up and works except the illumination for the gauges. (I have a wire crossed.) I will most likely fix that this week. I have an aftermarket cd deck that is in, but not wired up. I am also missing a trim piece for the center console. (M6 shift plate.) I have the A piller trim pieces, but I am converting to T-tops over the summer so I am not going to bother with those untill then. I still need to order gauges for the center vents so if anyone knows what size they are LMK. I will try to take some completed pics and post up so everyone can see. I found these awesome diagrams that show how to repin the cluster and the HVAC wiring. The one for the cluster is for a digital odometer, but its just as easy to figure out for the mechanical odometer (which I have.)
