I was going to show it off at the Shootout, but I couldn't wait.. I made a little progress tonight. Here is the new distributor location, maybe the first for a LT1. It should work flawlessly with my XFI.

Where is your water pump? Are you going to run one of those inline pumps?

Looks excellent BTW!

That definitely looks very nice. What did you have to do to get a SBC belt drive timing setup on there? Those pump delete plates are very nice looking as well. Custom made I'm sure.

Lt1 timing cover it taller and slightly different than a sbc cover, a few other parts had to be swapped out for a lt1. Ya, the water pump flanges were cnced then i had 12an fittings welded to them.

thanks

You make it sound like you bought off the shelf parts. I was told that the install issues were only the size and mounting of the cover. And probably push the cam dowel in some. What other parts had to be swapped out?

Either way, very nice setup man! Are providing the FAST system with a cam sync somehow, or just running bank to bank?

Jessel already sells the parts for a lt1 cam, but not a cover for the lt1 block.

I am still messing with the cam sensor. You can take an extra msd crank trigger sensor and press the magnet into the cam gear, thus a cam signal for the XFI.

Ahh, I figured that since you can use SBC timing chains there wouldnt be any difference at the cam... Other than the obvious fact that the dowel pin would probably interfere.

MSD sells a "Universal" Cam Sync Kit that is basically just a sensor and magnet. You could probably get that to work just by fabbing up a bracket for the cam sensor and then attaching the magnet like you said before.

The sbc timing chain you are referring too that fit lt1's are late model OE roller sbc timing chains. The jessel kit comes with a pre OE roller. The lt1 and late model sbc camshaft have a smaller diameter than the old sbc cams. If you notice the lt1 has a retainer plate and it cuts down 1/8 inch off both sides of the cam, thus putting the bolt holes on a smaller diameter.

thats what i was going to use, same thing just a little smaller.

first off, thats badass!:metal:

second, how is that going to work with a cover and still seal and not throw oil everywhere? Also isn't a belt sort of unreliable being that it can stretch and will probably get oil soaked? I understand the 4 cylinders and their belts, but they are dry and not near as powerful as this motor.

I guess I should just research this to find out how exactly it works. Im really curious about this setup.

It's a dry belt setup... the cover is behind the belt. ;) It's actually more reliable, less power loss, and makes degreeing the cam easier.

Same here. I may have a way to run an Electric water pump with my limited frontend space on the truck. :metal:

ok that makes more sense now. I was wondering how the belt wasn't going to get soaked.

not yet still mocking the rad up, but thats the pump

Rick Intrau ran a very similar set up on his car back in the day of his 8.08 pass.:secret:

Ya i had a few pics of his setup from back in the day. I had his long block pic to look at and i talked to a guy that has the Jessel setup on his NHRA lt1 car, he told me a lot about it, but no pic. So btwn the two i was able to understand what needed to be done.

As for the water pump flanges , that was a tough one, 12an fitting will not fit in the space btwn the upper and lower bolts, and still leave room for the fittings to turn and the bungs to be welded. It took some creative minds to figure an easy way to set it up.

Updated pics

Radiator, pump, fan, and hoses all in place.

Made a little more progress tonight

Saved about 15lbs off the front end swapping from the factory radiator and dual fans to a 3" dual core Griffin radiator (15.5x27.5) and Single 14" Spaul fan, 12an fittings and lightweight black 12an hose

OK, so I was thinking about somthing similar but carb'd (SR cam, Single Plane, nice heads, Jesel belt drive and shaft rockers) would you be willing to share more details on setting up the belt drive when that time comes for me?
