Finished my taxes a few days ago and it looks like I'm gonna get a little more back then I expected. I want to do a cam swap while I have my car apart for the long tube install but I'm trying to figure out a ball park idea of what parts are needed / cost. From all that i've gathered it looks like I'm gonna want either a Crane 227 or a CC503. The car is more of a summer DD when its nice out / go to the beach in type of car and will never see above 6,200 rpms.

Info on my car. These are parts I already have or are getting installed this spring. Car currently has around 92k on the clock and runs strong.

BBK 52mm TB, TB bypass mod, Trick Flow Elbow, LPE CAI, Jet Hot LT's (!EGR,!AIR), LT4 KM, Hooker 3" Super Comp cat-back, MSD Coil, MSD 8.5mm Wires, Mail order tune (either Madz28 or PCM4Less), Hypertech 160* Thermo, B&M Ripper Shifter, Jet Skip Shift Eliminator, March UD Pulleys, Control Arms, Control Arm Relocation Brackets, Panhard Rod, Eibach Pro-kit, Shocktower brace, and Weld-in subframe connectors

What do I need to safely run either of these cams without going insane and overbuilding my valvetrain to perform like a 7K drag car. Will SA 1.6 RR's be fine for a mild setup like this or do I need the NSA RR's, guide plates, etc?

Is this a solid start for what I want to be running? What else am I missing?

Crane Valve Spring and Retainer Kit (CRN-10308-1)
GM "Impala Gaskets" (12553160)
Fel-Pro Conversion Set Gaskets (FEL-CS9966)
Comp Pro-Magnum 3/8" Stud 1.6 Ratio SA (SE-1318-16)
Comp Rocker Arm Studs 3/8" (SE-4500-16)
Comp Hardened Pushrods (stock length) 7.200" (SE-7808-16)

I'd tack on a timing set and some lifters. Don't forget about gaskets, fluids, etc...

are you actually planning on removing the heads to do just a cam swap or are they already off? If they are on, I don't see the need to take them off and replace the headgaskets unless you just want to do the extra work as a precautionary.

As stated timing set and lifters couldn't hurt, maybe even an EWP too if you wanna get some extra ponies out of it... and yes SA rockers will work, mine are SA with my cc306

The heads are still on the car right now. I was gonna remove them to have them cleaned up, stock valves re-machined, have them assembled by a local engine shop.

In that case, the impy gaskets will work out... just didnt want ya going through extra work, extra $ if not necessary.. never hurts to get them cleaned... maybe even get them milled a little bit and pick up a bit more compression

I didnt want to rev more than 6100-6200 with my setup either, so to get the most out of it I went with the LPE 211/219. I think the 503 will pull to 64-500 or so and peak around 6200, meaning you could still shift it at 6200 but you would get the most out of it at 6500 or so.

The cc503 seems like a little too much cam to be redlining at 6200rpm. You may be more satisfied with the cc502. As PipesTA stated, a timing belt/kit would be a smart investment. How many miles are on the car?

we dont have timing belts but yes timing chain can't hurt, and double rollers are pretty cheap (Cloyes True double roller on mine) the 503 will be fine @ 6200, if he wants to rev it a little more he can, if he doesnt want to, he isn't going to lose much by keeping it down 300-400 rpms.

And the other thing is with the pushrods, if you get the heads cleaned up and especially if you have them milled, you need to check the length on the pushrods because stock length may be too much.

Timing belt, lol. This isn't 2JZTech :jest:

I agree with Pipes TA. I'd recommend a new timing chain and lifters as well. I'd also plan on getting a tune after. I assume it's a 3.42/M6 car as well, correct?

id go with the 227 and the crane 10308 spring kit, i have a stock replacement timing chain with like 1k miles on it in great shape if you want it along with some ARP rocker studs just re use your crank sprocket. stock replacement lifters will suffice what u want. i would definitely do head gaskets now rather than tear back into it later. get some good head bolts. :) then tune the NOS timer and youll run 9's

Haha oops. I should've caught that, considering I changed mine not too long ago...
