Picked up this 94 vert Sunday, this is the car I should have bought in Feb but couldn't afford it at the time, so instead I got a 98 mustang vert. sold that Friday, worked a deal on this, and brought it home.
bone stock other than 4.10 gears, ebay longtubes, elbow, Cai, and aluminum rad. the previous owner definitely made it look the part. but it has a header leak (he used the gaskets that came with the headers) a slight rocker/lifter tick, and he wired the fan to a switch, with speaker wire, off the power acc fuse no relay smh.

already fixed the hacked fan wiring. he installed an amazon aluminum rad/single fan with nice shroud, but just cut the factory wiring off. i fixed the wiring and fixed the tune. also he had the tcc lockup turned off for whatever reason when he tuned it for the 4.10 gears, i corrected that, and made the shift tables and kickdown percentage less aggressive to drive a little better. took it for a ride last night, and of course the new water pump he installed has a small wheep somewhere, smh.
one other thing that is something i noticed when we looked at it is the oil pressure gauge reads low. he claimed he ran 10w30 mobil one in it, but it seems thinner than that, he also did have the cluster out though when he did led bulbs in it, so not sure if thats why (alt gauge reads high as well, and fuel gauge is a quarter tank higher than reality) but coolant temp and mph/rpm read correct per eehack.
i bought a mechanical gauge that im going to tap into the fitting above the filter after an oil change tomorrow, and also going to double check the pickup didnt fall off.
other than those few small things, it feels good cruises good runs so far good

The OEM oil senders are notorious about reading low. But then GM didn't set the oil pumps up for much pressure either. I've always said , if the lifters ain't tapping at hot idle, the gauge is lying. I had a '89 GMC truck I bought new that always read real low oil pressure. At about 100k and something miles the gauge drop to zero one day and the oil warning light came on. I was oh shitting til I realized the engine wasn't knocking and the lifters not tapping. Put a new sending unit on it and was shocked to see I had 40 at idle and 60 cruising.

When the warranty expired, I switched over to 20w50 Castrol GTX changed every 3k miles for the 30 years that we owned it. I went with the 20w50 because the factory tune runs the engine so fuckin hot the oil gets thin as water. It was never modified in any way, left it bone stock. Only had 120k miles on it when she let it go.

checked the oil pressure today. 18-21 psi at 650 idle. calling it ok. this is with with 10w30 mobil 1 according to p.o. so switching tomorrow to valvoline high mileage 10w40 synthetic and a moroso race filter.
Car is now also called patches. floors have been patched atleast once. oh well. win some lose some.
my daughter has expressed interest in this being her car, so it will get fixed. it's otherwise a really decent car. suspension is stock height front with new stock parts, rear is stock spring with 1 coil cut.
new fleabay valvecovers coming today, I don't like the cheap spectre ones previous owner installed, the oil cap is loose and I do not like the open breathers with a maf.

Oh, Those are Torq Thrust M's. They almost seem to have a satin finish. The ones on my car are the TT2's full polish.
I'm an old school Cragar S/S five spoke guy. The Chrome Cragars have always rusted as you looked at them. They make em in polished aluminum now but the price is stupid.
The American Torq Thrust is a decent substitute at a decent price.

back to the cah. today valve covers swapped, tidy up wires and such, replace the broke #6 wire, install catch can and pcv back to normal instead of the open breather shit. add a few clamps here and there on the rad lines/overflow line. changed oil to 10w40 valvoline high mileage full synthetic and moroso 22459 filter. cold pressure is now 50psi, tapers to 30ish hot. I'll take it. dash gauge is still low, so whenever intake comes off to get resealed the sender will get swapped.
the ticking is definitely the header gaskets. found 3 header bolts loose. Man that weather sounds nice. I try to walk on our road most mornings for my health. It's been 80 plus at 5-6 AM so I come in sweating like a pig. It's getting a little better now that fall is approaching about 76 this morning. High about 95 today.

slowly working thru this thing. last weekend we took it to island dragway cars and coffee before the rain, then came home and taught my daughter how to replace header gaskets. she wants it as her car, so I told her she has gotta learn how to do stuff, her work and grades will be rewarded.
the cheapo speed engineering gaskets and bolts are garbage. felpro 1406 installed with arp bolts. refit y pipe, but something in this hooker aerochamber rattles when it gets hot, like a baffle is borked. still seems like there may be an exhaust leak ie header Crack between cylinders 3 and 5. oh well, that will get resolved over winter.
I noticed this week when it gets hot it kind of idled funny and a little rough, so decided to swap the ignition coil/icm with one I had laying around. p.o. used Amazon ones, so just figured I'd give it a shot and clean the maf as well. wellllllllll no matter how pretty something is, there is always some bs lurking. found the icm/coil wires as well as the maf wires were "repaired" at some point, ie stripped and twisted together.....wtf
fixed all that stuff and then reset the tb blades as he cranked them open but hot iac was at 0 counts. seemed to help with closing down from .67v to .55v now counts are at 30ish hot.
think next step is some suspension stuff, I want it a little tighter handling and a little less wandery on country roads. going to start putting together the spare motor for it with most likely a summit 8806 cam (summit hot cam) and LE1's just for some sound

actually had a post typed out the other day for this but didn't post it, passed out in bed phone hit me in face and closed my apps lol
see below pics for progress:
LE1 heads showed up. Should be more than enough for this combo, as well as a summit 8802 "hotcam" which is basically a gmpp LT4 hotcam with .560/.555 lift as opposed to .525/.525. Isky guide plates, comp .080 wall 5/16 pushrods, elgin 1.6 stainless rockers (think old pro mag knock offs), mahle 0.026 head gaskets, arp head bolts, my old sbe from my 94 T56 LE2 camaro that's freshish.
we started getting moving on it, but 8th grade means alot of school stuff for her, along with band and robotics. plus I had to go buy myself a truck to tow with, which I spent the last 2 weekends going nuts working on.

Well this one decides to piss me off. 2 lifters will NOT pump up or pass oil thru pushrod. #7 intake and #2 intake. all others are fine. I took those 2 out and cleaned them, soaked them overnight, put them back in different holes, and they still did not pump up .
the sucky thing is, there are limited options for new hydraulic roller stock style lifters now. the "drop in" morel 7717 do NOT work. the oil band is too tall and they cut oil flow completely off at partial lift.
ended up gambling and buying BTR Delphi LS7 lifters. allegedly they are the same as the gmpp lifters which cost nearly triple. they will be here tomorrow
had 60psi of oil pressure with 10w30 in it priming.

Idk the compatibility but I just went and looked and I have the OEM LS7 lifters and pushrods out of my 32K mile 08 C6 Z06 only removed because I did a heads cam setup with new components. Let me know.

Basically whoever was making lifters that were getting rebranded stopped. morel is like the only "drop in" anymore, but they are not machined the same. I have the pic somewhere.

It's odd that Catmaigne and now you, have discovered that the lifter oil bands are not always in the correct position to work properly in a conventional SBC even though they physically fit dimensionally. I remembered I have a set of used Comp dogbone style lifters that I would give to you if you need them. But it sounds like your new ones are coming today. It also reminded me that I need to check them in the box and make sure they are not getting rusty.

It's odd that Catmaigne and now you, have discovered that the lifter oil bands are not always in the correct position to work properly in a conventional SBC even though they physically fit dimensionally. I remembered I have a set of used Comp dogbone style lifters that I would give to you if you need them. But it sounds like your new ones are coming today. It also reminded me that I need to check them in the box and make sure they are not getting rusty.

In the photos here you can clearly see that I dropped in Howards tie-bar lifters with the heads on. They are AFR heads, I don't know if stock heads offer less clearance? Post #17 shows the #1 cyl set dropped in.

Nolando you have a part number? based on the link bar to lifter block boss, those are gen 1 retro rollers and are not normal lt1 +0.300 link bar lifters.
i know my crower solid rollers are the short ones, and if they were the correct lt1 height, they could not be removed with heads on

I guess you saw the specs I included. They are indeed +.300 body height so they can be used in original gen 1 sbc or in sbc roller cam blocks including gen 2 LT1.
I vaguely remember having to do a bunch of research to make sure the seat height, etc. was a match to the dog bone lifters.

well it's out. found some not so good shit the previous owner did. the front springs are cut, ok fine no biggie, didn't realize they were cut ON THE CAR AND THE CUT COIL WAS LEFT ON THE STRUT. like wtf. so now gotta order springs smh.
otherwise just a long day, lotta stupid little things that made us keep stopping and starting. I didn't pay attention to the shifter cable bracket and it got bent to shit. Hopefully that isn't an issue later. gonna plug away at it during the week swapping stuff over from the old motor to new.

still plugging away. hoping sunday we can stab it back in and make some noise with it. had to donate my og fluidampr that frank cahall gave to me about 13 years ago, right about the same time my daughter was born. the jegs hub has a different od on the locating nub for the balancer, and a new jegs balancer pulley is 213 bux, last i got one a few years back they were like 105 lol.
i have to figure out how to weld up one of the driver side header bolt holes on the header flange then clearance. that was our constant exhaust leak after doing gaskets. since i rtv'd the gasket to the header it came off in one piece, and could see light from the flange side of #5 exhaust runner to the bolt hole in the flange.

it's in and running. longer post tomorrow, I'm shot. we broke the trans cooler by accident and it sprayed trans fluid thru the whole nose of the car lol. I still need to bleed brakes, change oil, replace rad/fans/trans cooler and button up some small stuff. i will still need to do springs but that can be done in garage in the warmth now that it runs. i broke the shifter cable too ugh.
