View Full Version : Convince me not to sell everything and get something more exotic or modern..

Like the title says... convince me as to why I shouldn't just wash my hands of the headaches, the expenses, the future headaches, the past heartaches etc and just put everything up for sale and move on to something more exotic or modern.

I currently have plans to swap in the camaro (thats the heartache part) motor into the impala (whether at the shop where everything was built or with some help of a few members/close friends).
Thats where the headaches part comes into it...

But then what... thats where the future headaches come into it... idk... just rambling I guess, but the thought seems to cross my mind more and more every month, every week, every day I walk past that motor, or think about the car being down and coming across other issues...

Dont get me wrong, I love the Impala... there is not a connection like there was with the camaro, but then again that took over a decade and a half to establish...

Im sure everyone here knows about my camaro and what i saved and the plans for those saved items, but if not, lemme know and i can post up links...

In the end... would I be happier with a c7z, a GTR, a hellcat or demon, etc... or will I not be because anyone can go to the dealership and get one...

Im all over the place... lol. Sigh...

Like you stated, anyone can buy a new car. Very few can actually build a car. It’s an art. I love the fact that I can build a car and step back with pride and say “I built that”. I like to be different, the thought of an LS swap crosses my mind every now and then but I want to build that ultimate LT1 car so I can say LS swap not required. I want the be different and hear the LS guys cry when an outdated LT1 beats them. I have majorly of the parts and my car is paid for. Time is my issue but I’ll get there. Definitely don’t want a payment on something I can maybe drive 7-8 months if the weather is nice. Did that with a camper we bought new, making that payment in the winter months sucked!! Most cars of the 90’s were run hard and then sent to the yard for parts. We need people like us to keep them alive.

why cant you have both?

I know i just went and did what i did, but that was for the creature comforts, technology, warranty, etc as a "daily" (we all know i have a work truck so really its a drive when im home car) but i still have the impala too, i still want the project car life, i still want something i can make however i want thats mildly obnoxious and makes people go wtf.

the biggest thing you have to decide is, do you want to still do the project car thing. working, tinkering, modding stuff, or do you want to just be able to say "hey, lets go" and jump in something fun and fast with the tech and reliability/warranty. will it bother you that you just went and bought something more modern/exotic instead of being the hot rodder you have been for x amount of years?

i know i didnt lose any of my cars how you did, and didnt have a connection with them as strong as you and the camaro, but honestly, when i got rid of the firebird, a little piece of me disappeared. then when i had to sell you the impala due to my divorce, i really got disheartened and was like "why the hell do i keep putting money into this shit if i only ever lose it/sell it for a fraction". the 94 camaro just wasnt the same as the bird (plus the rust). Now, my current impala i do not want to rush, hence where the new camaro came in. i really do not want to mod it.

Oh, and I wont have both because i have a 2 car garage... and with the wife getting one side, i only have one spot for my "fun ride" whatever it may be...

As for only driving something new for a most of the year (the 7/8 months), thats not me. I drive my stuff all year round, unless its snowing, or there is snow on the ground, and even with that if i went with something awd like a GTR, Id even push that envelope in the less severe stuff...

New cars are fun! I've been doing a lot of autocross stuff this year and having a blast. There's a huge race that I went to in PA as a spectator. At the UMI Motorsports facility in Clearfield. You should check out your local SCCA region and try your hand at a race. The amount of seat time you get for the money is tough to beat. Drag racing is still cool to me, but the amount of down time at every event gets so freaking old. They build classes specifically for our Camaro's Mustang's and Challenger type cars called Classic American Muscle, or CAM. 4th gens are quite popular in it. Maybe a breath of fresh air into something new is the spark you need?

Once the seed is planted, it's hard to go back.

I cant tell you how many times I've just sat and daydreamed of a new (er) car without the inherent issues that go along with older cars and specifically our platform.

Sometimes you just wanna drive and play in comfort and not stress on what you need to repair afterward.

Another point is, a new car has payments (for the most part) and when a car with payments is broken, life sucks. I can blow the rods out of my camaro and I stick it in the garage for a year while I rebuild, she doesn't owe me anything.

I have had a newish car with payments for most of my adult life, on top of owning two fbodies. I don't have a garage to regularly store anything in. Both the T/A and IROC have been offroad for roughly 8-10 years, because my priorities always lie with the newer cars with payments.

With new- insurance is more, aftermarket is more.

But, with new, you get the luxuries of big power off the showroom floor plus creature comforts. It all depends how bad you want it. I didn't expect to buy a brand new ZL1, but I can say that I loved the experience. Being the first person to wash the car, give it a ceramic coating myself in my own detail shop, etc - that was an amazing experience. For someone not knowing 6th gens, they may think it's just another Camaro and I couldn't care less what they think. In stock form, it'll absolutely decimate most cars on the road today and I'm a big fan of how it looks and how comfortable it is to drive.

The IROC was a $1200 hacked up bastard of a car, it can stay in the weeds until I'm ready to invest in it. The T/A was $5k that has $15k in parts installed and been living from shop to shop for 6 years. When it's done, it'll be an experience and I am excited about it. But it's still another $5k LS swapped car that might crack 400 whp.

My suggestion is keep the Impala, buy an exotic/new sports car. Pay for winter storage if you don't want to keep it outside, or ask around to see if you know anyone with a spot in their shop. I'm willing to bet in your large circle of friends that someone is willing to give up a spot on their garage floor for you. You probably won't like a C7Z because they're not made for people who are tall (and wide in my case). GTR, CTS-V, ZL1, Demon, Hellcat, Viper, GT350R - this is an EXCITING time to be a car guy. Get out there and at least test drive something.

You can have an in-depth look at my car if it's something you are interested in. There is something to be said about a car making almost 1000whp on a stock fuel system (youtube complete street performance).

As you have stated mentally your the guy that enjoy being out in the garage tinkering. Look at all that you have been inspired to do. Have a car that is new and has most of the new teas that you would get with a 15 and up vehicle is great. On the other hand having one that doesn't have all those amenities as refreshing as well. Is 4 you tattling putting the Camaro motor in the Impala do you plan to stay with the automatic? If so it should be a fairly easy swap. I dunno with the Impala there is a possibility of having to have a custom mounting bracket made for your ProCharger.

Man you need to follow your hart. Many people have sold there LT-1 stuff and regretted it. They wished they would of not done so.

Of the choices you listed, I'd get a C7Z hands down. Bone-stock it will rape most vehicles out there from a roll, and in a turning contest it's not even close. They are still in the $60+ range last time I looked. Gong from a 4th gen into a C7 Vette will be quite a shock to your senses.

Couldn't agree more. So many cars are over 500hp, idle at 600rpm, run on 87 octane, have a warranty, and a crazy aftermarket around them. Interiors have a ton of tech, nothing rattles or shakes, etc.

I'd tell you to get a 5th gen Z/28 and watch it start to escalate in value soon, but you won't fit in one, lol. I'm 6'2" and with a helmet on it's rubbing the roof when I race it. I have to recline the seat a bit more during a race. I've been in a C7 GS and it had much more room for me.

My home is paid for and there is no mortgage anymore.

If I blow up something new, its most likely gonna be because something malfunctioned, as I dont beat my stuff. Didn't beat the Camaro, or the Impala.

And finally, if I blow my shit up, Im not the guy that can just stick something in the corner till another day. Hell, I always bought 2nd and 3rd toy cars when I knew the camaro would be down, so Id have something else to play with... but with a warranty, and something newer amd more common parts I dont see that being an issue...

I am a bit biased as im already in the process of selling mine to eventually get a more modern car. I get exposure to a lot of awesome cars through my detailing and have driven a lot of them as well. It is very refreshing to have a modern car with a wide open aftermarket and plenty of support along with more modern amenities. Since my bird became more of a weekend car I've become spoiled with my daily in terms of comfort and amenities. As others have mentioned modern cars have far more power, can make more power (or atleast easier), and you can have a warranty and run regular gas. That being said for me atleast I don't think I will ever take on a project as big/hardcore as my firebird was simply because of the financial aspect. I still love the car and driving it and it definitely turns a lot of heads, but the support for these cars is getting harder and harder to find. I've had multiple performance shops refuse to work on it. Even shops that are GM specific have turned me away when they heard its a built LTx. I think the biggest thing for me is that the F body community in general has gone down a lot in the last 10 years especially in Florida. Anytime anyone does anything outside of the normal cookie cutter 4th gen they are deemed rice and an endless amount of shit talking happens. I have more general automotive friends these days than I do Fbody specific friends simply because around me the community is basically all assholes.

I knew the Z28 was on the rise. I was still seeing NEW Z28's on dealer lots up until late 16/early 17! I didn't realize it was so tight in them versus the 5th gen 2SS even w/o a sunroof, but then again I never strapped on a helmet in mine. I sat in a C7Z with comp seats at Corvettes @ Carlisle and almost needed the jaws of life to get out. Even with the seat all the way down and back, it was just uncomfortable. I'd imagine with the regular seats, it would be a different experience.

Like harner said, go drive a few different things, see what you like and what you dont. im very impressed with many new cars, just have to see if you really like it or not.

youre not the only one who has said this, Ltconvert has talked about getting rid of everything and just getting a v2 or vette or something. The scene changed, and once cookie cutter jeeps and stock kia's took over trophies at the shows, it killed it for alot of people

You hit the nail on the head for advice dude. I own a 2001 Tundra, bullet proof with mods for acceleration and towing. It’s also my daily and has Apple CarPlay. My 80 El Camino is doing time in a shop getting metal work and I have to agree. Its great to have best of both worlds. I would not give either up for anything and it’s taken me most of my 46 year life to figure this all out.

I started learning to drive this El Camino at the age of 8 when my dad purchased it brand new. He thought me everything I know about cars and trucks using it as the guinea pig. I am now driving it twice a week and restoring/customizing same as you guys. Never loose that passion, as it makes getting through life easier.

I think you may have answered your own question when you went to the car show yesterday. Sure if you have a new supercar people are going to look at it. But at the end of the day what does it say about you? That you have the money to afford a 6 figure car?
Whereas if you keep your impala and put your camaro motor in it what does it say about you? I think it says that you still have the money to afford nice stuff but you also have a vision to take something and make it your own, and have the insight to dare to be different, don't care what other people think and break the cookie cutter mold.
I know when I go to a car show and I see a GTR or a McLaren sure I will look at it But will just move along and think oh just another rich guy. But if I see something like your impala I will go over every inch of it looking to see what's custom, what has been modified, ect and will have a much higher respect for the owner of that vehicle.
Just my .02 but I think you had an eye opener yesterday.

LTXtexh.com is my drug...No problem man, just trying to shed some light. Sometimes when something is right in front of you that's when it is hardest to see.

I know for a fact that if you were to sell off all your stuff you would regret every second of it.

I rented a GC last year to go over the Pass to Eastern Washington. Never felt safer. It was snowing and I was cruzin at 55 sometimes more or less it just keeped on track. The only draw back was it had 9 speeds and too many things to play with. [emoji16]
