View Full Version : Bye Bye G8

I was getting mildy bored with my G8 GXP, namely due to the fact that every common G8 problem i had in literally 5k miles of ownership. it put a bad taste in my mouth, and the car didnt really hold any emotional attachment to us. Yeah the kids loved having a back window to stick their arm out of, and the spaciousness was nice, but i really jumped the gun and bought it when i really wanted a cts v2. even modded the ls3 was fast, but it doesnt have that torque that a big car needs.
i have been eyeing the gen 6 camaros since they came out, but was financially out of reach for many reasons. In the summer i went to Petco and saw a SS 1LE roll in, and fell in love with them even more.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago, got in the G8 to drive the kids to their mothers, and the sunroof was rattling out of nowhere. Then it started leaking, that was the last nerve. I started looking around for a gen6 camaro ss. I found one at a dealer 10 minutes from my house, had a day off, so took a ride over. Went for a ride and i was hooked. got the G8 appraised, they offered me more than i wanted anyway, plus threw some on top for the parts that were on it (i was going to leave it stock). After really talking it over with my fiance, we decided to do it since it was pretty much show up in g8, leave in camaro, payments changed but thats it. so, here it is.
38714
2016 1ss with 14k miles. has extended warranty via gm, plus lifetime powertrain warranty via the dealer. Yes it had the engine rebuilt at 9k miles due to a failed oil pump (its a early 16 production), but other than that its in pretty good shape. A8 is the only concern due to the torque converter issues, but the car has the warranty so yeah. previous owner put these 19" wheels on it with 285 front/305 rears. i think its lowered too.

I just wish the insides were nicer. I can't get over the interior, it's horrendous to me. The outside is sharp......though it took some time for the 6th gen to grow on me. But nope, can't move past the interior. I can safely say I'll never personally own one.

The dash feels very iroc to me
the biggest complaint about the whole car, given the fact that I'm short, is the height of the window/door. no guido gold chain wife beater arm hanging out for me lol

GM made smoked tail lights from the factory for the 1LE cars. They're $500 for the tails and center brake light. Very popular option. The red tails do stick out like a sore thumb.
I love the interior. Everyone cried about the 5th gen interior being ugly, and I didn't think they were ugly at all. 2010 GM bland, but not ugly or unusable. The 6th gen interiors are simply bad ass. My ZL1 has alcantara seat inserts, steering wheel, dash pieces, and shifter. There is also alcantara on the door panels. Easy to clean with a brush and water/isopropyl alcohol mix. The cluster is customizable and has plenty of gauges. Line lock function in the menu options. Buttons galore on the small, flat bottom steering wheel. Paddle shifters are actually usable and comfortable versus my V2. MyLink has totally evolved - the entertainment system is far superior to most other major manufacturers. Android Auto is amazing, nothing like putting Waze from your phone onto the screen.
I wish the car had a front camera (not PDR) specifically to make parking easier. Headliner isn't pretty near the windshield. Typical GM crap. Can't say I'm disappointed in the least. The Recaro seats are SUPER comfortable. Heated and cooled, I could drive my car to Cali and back.
I am taller and my seat is basically laying on the ground, and I can rock the elbow hanging out the window. Of course my arm is probably at a 130* angle, but it feels right. Like old school chopped muscle car right. Except you are reminded by the sheer refinement of the driving experience that it's not a rat road you're in.
I can't speak on the SS interiors, but the ZL1 interior makes me happy and I feel it's an understated feature at the very least.

well, the car went back to the dealer monday for the dreaded a8 transmission torque converter shudder. bickered with the dealer until finally they did the tsb procedure triple flush. got the car back tuesday and have been putting miles on it to see if it comes back, if it does it gets a new converter and possibly trans under warranty. i want this to be resolved soon as i want to do the watkins glen track day at the end of the month.

ended up talking to the og owner and got some history, along with what mods it has. 1le sways, bmr lowering springs, miro wheels, motul brake fluid, carbotech pads (explains why it rips your face off when braking).
he traded it in on a 17 grand sport after having nearly every '16 camaro issue he could have, so hopefully the only issue that I have is the converter tsb since everything else has been fixed lol

You're literally the only person I know that doesn't like the interior of the 6th gen. It is world's better than the 5th gens design, which is somewhat better than the 4th gen design.
The chassis capability is insane on the new cars. The figured out how to get the weight out.

finally got a new front lip as a birthday present from my fiance, the stock one was cracked from the previous owners wife. also picked up Oracle led black side markers and led reverse lights from him (he found them in the trunk of his vette from when he traded he Camaro in).
I am at a crossroads with this car. gm has no fix for the torque converter shudder besides a "new" "revised" fluid for the 3rd time. I could resolve the problem completely with a tune, but I dont want to void the warranty. plus with sales slumping due to the refresh/the carfax in 1 month the value dropped 6 grand.
do I let the dealer do the triple flush again then say fuck it and tune it? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190224/85c39aa065289700d9b80a6002bcb2a4.jpg

If the dealer is still trying fixes on their dime, thats what i would do.
As for the tune, u said that voids warranty, so to me I wouldnt. At the same time I would also make sure that the tune voids warranty.
For example, my jeep has a modified tune in it to disable the mds. The computer needed to be unlocked so its obvious that a tune modification was done, yet there has been no issues with warranty work.
And i like the splitter. Think it needs the lil adjuster rods, even if just cosmetic ones. Lol.

as for tune, from what I've read online most dealers instantly void warranty if they see its reflashed. I may be able to get lucky as when they rebuilt the motor the dealership shorted the engine harness and fried the pcm (they replaced all) so it has been "flashed" once already

That totally depends on the dealer with regards to voiding the warranty. If the "tune"can be directly traced to having a problem then you'll probably be voided.

This. A tune won't void a warranty unless the car has an issue and they rule the tune as being the cause. The dealership I bought my car from seems relatively mod friendly, and also installs aftermarket speed parts and also factory upgraded cars (Callaway). They didn't bat an eye when I told them my V had a boatload of mods and was tuned by a semi local, reputable shop.
In regard's to Shaun's latest mod - I must say, I like it! It is far less obnoxious in person and reminds me a little of the 5th gen Z28 front splitter.

car goes in to dealer friday for a laundry list.
starter slow cranked like battery dead click crank click click after being stuck in traffic. talked to og owner and he said thats why he had it replaced. it would heat soak in summer time and he would have to leave it sit for a hour or 2 before it would crank fast enough to start.
rear diff groan and chatter getting worse, acting like a locker most of the time.
trans issue still there. more hunting in gear now, longer delay between any gear and reverse, very hard shift into reverse.
oh and the steering gear recall. i think thats it for this round

LTXtech.com is my drug...not really. went miserably south. they claim they could not replicate the starter or transmission issue, but did flush the diff and do the power steering recall. guess what, trans issue is still there. gm customer care wasnt really any help, was more or less told "you bought this car knowing it had issues".
basically, we are not going to be paying this much for a car that multiple dealers wont touch when the problem is CLEARLY there, gm CLEARLY knows about it and has a fix but wont honor it under warranty even when it has already been worked on and flushed before for it. we are out of lemon law mileage/date and dont have the money to fight under the warranty act given our house purchase, so kat and i agreed to wash our hands of it.
Got what we could get (multiple dealers nailed us for a previous ding (literally) on the carfax for the previous owner and killed our trade in value, but all the dealers were the same $ wise) and we traded it in. We couldnt find a GC SRT for our price range/monthly payment (we tried really hard on a maroon one), but we found something else we both liked.
Probably going to get a bunch of crap for this, but it is awd/4 door and can fit the kids/my grandmother who lives with us. It honestly was a large mistake getting rid of the G8, the room it had was so useful. but this will do. kids already love it.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190409/a582c8eb119617127d0a145e881faf83.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190409/24fdaf8c2b2981f1bad77f92eb448e96.jpg

LTXtech.com is my drug...[emoji23] Thank you. I know its fried rice, just american made, but as a kid growing up watching World Rally Championship, the focus RS was a fast car. I had a focus hatchback at one point, and for what it lacked in power it made up for in weighing nothing and handling amazing. The RS trim was big in europe and something special, but us in the US didnt get them until 2016. It has enough room, rides stiff but tolerable, has awd, and honestly, its a more enjoyable drivig experience (its amazing being able to SEE things when driving).
And yes, youre right, i wouldnt have been able to live up to you with the GC [emoji23]

LTXtech.com is my drug...yes. most rear bias is 70% you can obtain. has "drift mode" too that turns off all the nannies and actually disconnects the rear diff when you grab the brake then engages it locked to allow it to slide. all kindsa funky stuff. the shocks are very very stiff when enabled outside of normal mode. and as usual i buy a newer car and its already lowered *facepalm* was just taking a look underneath and found whiteline lowering springs on it.

yes. most rear bias is 70% you can obtain. has "drift mode" too that turns off all the nannies and actually disconnects the rear diff when you grab the brake then engages it locked to allow it to slide. all kindsa funky stuff. the shocks are very very stiff when enabled outside of normal mode. and as usual i buy a newer car and its already lowered *facepalm* was just taking a look underneath and found whiteline lowering springs on it.

Yeah, Has whiteline lowering springs and an underhood bolt kit with the nice bolts/washers, aem dryflow drop in air filter. That looks to be all. I am going to put it in the air this weekend and look underneath to see if the intercooler has ever been out or the hotside/coldside pipes changed, it may possibly have a ford racing bypass valve too (looks aluminum and not plastic like stock).
Kat was very very clear that i am not allowed to mod it . Only thing it will get is if it doesnt have the aluminum bypass valve, it will get one, because the plastic stock one is known for the diaphragm failing around 20-25k miles (its under the car attached directly to the turbo, gets very hot)

Time to rip that dry flow off and build a PVC CAI the right way. Haha. These are cool cars, man. Good platform. I look at these like a competitor to the STI, which there aren't many of (Evo and ?). I'd imagine this thing could possibly hand a regular SS it's ass around the twisties. Plus it probably has Sync v3, which is a godsend in the automotive media/entertainment realm.

It has sync v3, which is much better than mylink. the sti is a competitor, but stock for stock this is quicker and handles better. most car reviews you will find complain about the seats and stiff suspension on these, which my grandmother thinks rides better than the camaro and feels more comfortable, so if a 74 year old woman says its fine, ill go with that LOL

The '15 1LE is awesome, but is lacking a bit in braking. still has stock rotors/pads/fluid. hoping to use black friday to my advantage and get some better brakes on here, and motul rbf600 fluid.

Before you spend any money go to stranoparts.com and look around. Sam Strano is one of the best drivers in the nation. He only carries the things that work. He will have exactly what you need.

i would try autocross first. A friend of mine does a lot of NJ races near you. He runs a live axle Mustang. His name is Carlton Griggs. Super friendly guy, and I'm sure he'd let you ride shotgun for a lap or two. 1LE's do very well in autocross. They are quite nimble, have great torque and are classed well. Just get some good tires first, none of that run-flat crap.
