I've been working on a friend's 04 Accord V6. The power steering was whining very loud even just sitting there..
I replaced the power steering pump and filled the reservoir. After starting it, the whining went away, but once you start turning the wheel it whines extremely loud. So we cut the engine off and then power steering fluid started pouring out of the reservoir really quickly.
I jacked up the car so that the wheels were off the ground and turned the wheel lock to lock (about 25 times) while constantly checking the fluid level in the reservoir. The fluid level would rise and then drop and sometimes overflow, but I never allowed the the reservoir to empty.
I started the engine again and the fluid dropped about an inch and then foamed back up to the top. Then if you turned the wheel it would just whine and start foaming up and overflow. And from there, once you shut the engine off it would foam up even more and just start pouring out of the top of the reservoir.
I moved it back into a parking spot and the power steering pump would kick in and out along with the noise.. (while I turned the car it would be easy to steer and then hard and then easy), which made me feel like everything was ok, and that I just needed to bleed the system more. But I have never seen power steering fluid pour out of the reservoir like that... I used 2 quarts of power steering fluid tonight...
anybody have a similar experience? maybe know what's going on? maybe the power steering pump isn't the only thing that needs replacing?
