View Full Version : Benefits of stepped headers?

Just wondering what people think about these?

After helping my buddy install a set of those new stainless works LTs, ive been tempted to swap my pacesetters for a set...just because they look so much nicer.

On a seperate note, are there any gains to be had from switching from a 1 3/4 header (full) to a 1 7/8? Im sure it depends on the HP the engine is currently making, but how about for the average stock or cammed LT1?

I really dont see you getting enough gains to switch over unless your running shorties right now. If you had a completely built 450+ horse motor then maybe you would see some nice gains, but on a cammed car i dont think it would be necessary.
Id save the cash to put toward porting the heads or something.

The "stepped" headers are good for helping out against reversion. This is helpful on cams with overlap (tighter LSA, lots of duration, etc).

(Shamelessly ripped from a post NightTrain66 made when I asked a similar question)

So then unless you have the motor built, you don't really need stepped headers. Right?

Plain 1 3/4 in primary tube are enough until you make pretty big power...I still run them on my camaro after watching a friend of mine swap his out for 1 7/8 in and gained only 5 hp and he was at the 600hp mark.

So then unless you have the motor built, you don't really need stepped headers. Right?Pretty much, at least you won't see enough of an increase to justify swapping the headers.
I'm running a cam with a lot of overlap and a decent amount of duration in my new 383 (http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2297151/6).
I'm still on the fence as to what I will end up doing. Probably gonna stick
with the 1-3/4 for now and revisit the 1-7/8 idea over the winter.

With a stock of mild cam, I don't think you'll notice much (if anything) by upgrading.

So then unless you have the motor built, you don't really need stepped headers. Right?yeah you won't notice much if any gain going to stepped headers on a bolt-on/cam only car, but once you get a bigger cam and some heads you'll notice a little difference from the increased exahust flow.

Joel, if you have the $$$ I'd go ahead and pick up a set of those LPP's because thats a killer deal. I almost jumped on a set, and hadn't I bought the cam I would've.

im hoping to be into the 400 range (flywheel)... my heads are slightly pocket ported and milled.

also my cam is 110LSA.

I wouldnt be disappointed at all only gaining 5hp. My pacesetters got banged up pretty bad when i took the heads off this summer.

Those LPP headers are awesome. if I didn't just buy my Pacesetters I would have gotten those.

How about if putting headers on for the first time replacing the stock manifolds? Which is the better route to go? I'll probably be purchasing headers next summer.

BTW, I have no real mods to speak of. Only exhaust and CAI at this point, but headers and cam are a next year project, hopefully.

agreed but the quality of the stainless LPP stepped header is MUCH better than the pacesetter (although i have no complaints about my pacesetters) for only about 100-150 more so why not get them?

yeah after i got my pacesetter i saw the LPP's. wish i would have waited bit longer cause the stainless steel for that price is worth it.

Might as well buy the better ones up front so you don't have to replace them later.
Especially if you are spending the coin on stainless headers.

Definitely install a 3" catback with the headers.
There's no point in connecting them to a stock exhaust.

he's being gay and talking about true duals.

granted he also wants LCA's and relocation brackets and to fix the dent in his rocker and has no money. :wheelchair:
