View Full Version : looks like its time to say goodbye to my formula

It pains me to say this but its definitely time to sell my formula. My dog has a back injury and has lost control of his hind legs. He will need a surgery which will cost around $6,000 and I don't have any family that is willing to help me out. I am currently fixing a few minor things and will be posting the sale thread soon.

That's very tough man. I am currently up to $2000 in vet bills for one of my boys. It's hard to think about but my wife and I have agreed that we will take care of him and get him what he needs as long as his quality of life is good. If we feel he is suffering and degrading, we will have to make a tough choice but it will be made in his best interest.

You will make the correct choice if/when the time comes. Prayers for your boy.

Thanks man. I have had him since he was two months old. I know I am going to get the surgery if he needs it I just need a good way to pay for it if it happens. Right now he is on bedrest and on three different meds. I also had to cancel a detailing job today so I could keep an eye on him.

Talk to your vet about payment plans, most of them do it. I try to avoid it but if I were in your situation I might look at it again. This might allow you to avoid the immediate big outflow of cash, get the dog what he needs, and give you time to sell the car or find some other form of raising the money to pay them off quickly. I wouldn't stay on the payment plan for long depending on the interest rate they are charging.

I already spoke to my vet about payment methods. If I have the surgery done at my regular vet they offer a payment plan, but do not have a MRI. If I take him in for emergency care (because he loses pain reception) the vet with a MRI does not have payment plans so I will probably get raped by the credit card interest. I am going to call another vet nearby that may have a MRI and offers emergency care options to see if they offer a payment plan.

So far I have sold about 1/3rd of my videogame collection which is already hitting home. Does anyone on here know of any organizations that may be able to help?

im not having much luck finding any organizations yet. The ones I have found have a very extensive application process, which I understand, but its still frustrating.

Most vets/clinics accept CareCredit. One of my dogs ranked up a HEFTY vet bill at the ER when he ate a ton of allergy and ibuprofen pills. Ended up getting approved on a week night on the way to the ER. Still working on that bill but he has been back in action for quite a while, now. I'll never forget that call, on my way home from grad school.

Many would put their animals down with any sign of health issues. I think if you create a GoFundMe, that'll help with the vet bills. This community is very charitable and I'm sure many of us would chip in.

Best of luck.

Thanks guys. Yea im going to setup a go fund me. The misses isnt a huge fan of it, but her family has always been wealthy so I dont think she understands it (not trying to insult anyone its just a differing viewpoint). regardless of what she thinks im going to set it up when I can. I have been working my ass off and selling stuff, on top of working on major school projects.

Yea, literally the first thing my grandma said when I told her was oh well you can put him down. I honestly don't understand how people could do that. Unless he is in pain that can't be controlled without crazy medication I am going to do everything I can for him. My dogs do so much for me everyday, especially when my lingering mental issues from the military kick in. To me they are so much more than just animals they are my family, hell they are better to me than most of my family is anyway. I know how hefty the bills can be I had another dog get a hold of a poison toad while I was in Iraq. Luckily I was able to pay for what she needed without even thinking about it. She is still going strong almost 10 years later.

Have you thought about a personal loan? Maybe a title loan from a bank or credit union?

Sure have elky. Either way im going to have to payoff the debt. Its just a HUGE unexpected debt for me and with upcoming life events I want as little debt as possible.

One of my boys keeps finding the poisonous toads (Bufo marine toads), and try to get the every time. We have a deal with our emergency vet that he gets the 10th visit free, lol

sweet Jesus. with how expensive poison toads can be you should get a free one every 5 visits haha

What are the odds your pet will recover from paralysis for the fee? That $$$ may be better spent on a doggie wheelchair if his pain is not a major issue...and a cheaper route in the long run. Granted some surgery may be needed for infection containment, but prolly @ a lower cost as needed. Something tells me that as a war vet (Thanks for your service, sir), you can quickly adapt and make things happen. Just sayin' as a lifelong dog lover and advocate.

I am still waiting to get him in for a MRI once that is done we can figure out what the chances of him walking again are. As with everything in life I am hoping for the best and preparing for the worst.

Our dogs are like family to us too, and I would whatever it takes if something happened to one of ours.

Got some awesome news today. I ended up driving a bit over 100 miles to go to the University of Florida's vet school. They currently have my dog and are going to do a CT scan then the surgery all for $3000. I've been busting my ass detailing for the last few weeks and scraped up about $1000 so over all I made off pretty well. The vet said there is a 96% chance of him walking again :). Looks like I will be able to keep the bird a bit longer
