Lookin to trade my Caddy in on a new vehicle. Actually just batting it around.
Ive really become so fond of customized H1 Hummers with the slant back... diesel of course...
Fuel mileage and ride quality is not an issue... can anyone with any experience post up cons of owning one?
This is pretty much exactly what I would want...

I do know they offered the Duramax and Allison combo with would be way more reliable and powerful, I dont know how deep your pockets are but they are EXPENSIVE....

They always came with a 6.5 DD, its gonna suuuuuuck. And leak oil. Which is very LT1 like, so maybe you will love it?

2006 models. Duramax LLY. Has the potential for shoddy HG and weak head bolts, also tends to overheat if pulling full GCWR. But, I do not think a H1 can tow as much as the motor can so you should be fine unless someone put a big tune on her. Trans is good for "maybe" an additional 100hp over factory but you play with fire above that.
And nothing is cheap to replace/fix, think corvette tax but double
Whats interesting is if its an 06 engine, which means LBZ, which is like the LS1 on that family line. Few articles say LLY but 06 was LBZ so who knows.

The earlier years got his favorite trans, the 80e. Diesel ones got the Allison, there are a few shops on the east for that rebuild.
But again, you won't be stressing the trans with an H1.

All I remember is when I would get a hmmwv up to top speed it was like entering the atmosphere...Also they could be fun to start sometime. The only way to start them sometimes was to block of the exhaust to build up pressure. granted I don't know if this applies to the civilian H1. Also do not open the rear hatch from both sides at the same time (if the civilian one does that) it is a royal pain in the ass to get it back on.
I've built plenty of 4L80Es for H1s. It's TRUCK... Where a 4L80E belongs.

The 6.5 is a dinosaur, Idk much about em. If it's the 2006 model you get a duramax, which you can crank up to decent power easily. If you constantly beat on your trucks it's not gonna like much more than 400whp was what I was saying.

Just saw the latest episode of diesel brothers... I know they make it look cool but they don't show you how insanely slow that thing is and you mentioned towing.... good luck towing, the one I used to drive would barley tow itself..
Now if you could afford the 06 duramax that should be quite an improvement.

Wonder how hard it is to swap one? A couple of years ago, I picked up a 100,000 mile LBZ Duramax + Allison + transfer case for $3500. That was a killer deal.
Diesels are cool until they break, haha. They always break expensive. Part prices are kinda crazy. My ARP heads studs and head gaskets for my LBZ were $1,000. Pretty sure Duramax injectors are more expensive than injectors for semi trucks.

This probably doesn't apply and if I misread something above i apologize. The Army Humve got 2 changes/upgrades while i was in Iraq. One I saw had a turbo Diesel that put out more power than the previous but still lacked any power after 2nd gear and beyond. (this is hearsay) The other i saw had a super charged V8 (gas). I think (just assuming) thus may had been a special ops vehicle and may not have been put into the common Army circulation. The typical Humve would/could over heat but that was because of all the added armor, ammo, fuel, water, and equipment added in combat.
Over all I think it would be fun and you would like the cushier civilian model. If you don't like it, there is always someone looking to buy one.

So my buddy who is gonna loan me his for a bit was messaging with me... and evem as a vehicle he loves... he had what I think is more negatives than positives...
Ugh...
"Hey bro... long time hope all is well... I had to do some serious cooking mods to get my h1 tow worthy... and it it struggles to go up serious inclines. But none the less it does the job for me. 45-55 mph it's screaming on the highway. These were not made for highway use. Mine can safely traverse at 60-70 but it's due to the mods I have done. The 6.5 motor was chosen for realizability and durability. It's not a powerful engine but it is a workhorse. I've done every mod to up power and I'm at about 350hp and 500trq ... that's not much for a 9000lbs vehicle. I can keep up with traffic and even highway traffic. These were designed for 20mph over unlaced terrain so keep that in mind. I can get into a long list of mods if you want but keep in mind this is my favorite toy, I drive it to the gym almost everyday, it's insane in the snow and there is nothing like it on the road, that being said it can be tricky at times to work on, it has military roots and specialized parts, isn't good on gas and has some quirks... but it's a fuckin HUMMER and I love mine. I know these things inside and out. I'll be honest a 1400
Mile trip at 45-55 mph is not going to be fun and it might over heat if you don't mod it, but for driving around town it would be fun. Annnnd everyone will know where you are."

No I don't remember it. How many times towing with a 6.0 are you gonna reach half throttle? Very few. Less than towing with an anemic high mile 4.8 ext cab z71, and that drags uhaul trailers with these cars on them no issue. The supercharger will help, and won't hurt with low boost.
