Project: 95 Trans Am

So I picked up a 95 trans am in September for $300. Lt1 M6 with 140k on the clock. I loved it stock other then the intake gaskets leaked like crazy and the o2 sensors were shot and made the car stumble once warm. Fixed those issues but now it's time to build. Starting a build thread to keep everyone updated.

I've been hording parts over the last few months and this weekend coming up I'm finally gonna drop the drivetrain and go to town.

Parts so far:
Ported heads ( don't know who did the work... But can't hurt to run em)
Ported intake ( came from the same motor as the heads)
Stock opti ( MSD currently and I don't trust it)
Msd ignition coil
Speed daddy long tube headers
ORY
Full Victor renz head gasket set and bolts
Fel-pro timing and rear main seal kit
New water pump ( I'll go electric later)
Comp cam timing set

I contacted Lloyd Elliot and bought the cam he suggested along with other parts:

227/235 .565/.579 110 LSA
Lunati 1.6 voodoo roller rockers
Lunati valve springs

My clutch only has 2800 miles on it ( according to the PO) so if that's the case this should be all I need other then some random fluids.

Buddy of mine works at advance Auto and caught a typo in their system and got me a 5 quart jug of royal purple for $18.

Been running an MSD opti on mine for about 5 years or so. probably has 30-40k miles on it. Had the rotor screws back out once but thats been the only issue and thats common with any brand opti. I wouldn't hesitate to run it. Worst case is you have to send it back to MSD to be rebuilt which costs alot less than a gm opti.

I'm not sure what it's issue is. Car runs fine but at some points I get a stutter between 3-4k rpm..... I got the stock opti for a good price so I'm just gonna put that on and store the msd in the garage for a just in case moment.

mine worked BEFORE i sent it to them for a rebuild, twice, to replace the bearing. ended up coming back possessed as once the car warmed up the idle would go all over the place, the timing signal from the opti module was crazy. sold that garbage and got a delco, never had another problem

Mine always worked... except it always had a 5200 rpm stumble... sent it for a rebuild... 115 bucks later amd sold it for the cost of rebuild. Replaced it with a delco... never stumbled again.

Yep that's the plan. Gonna clean off a few surfaces and clear it today. And changing valve springs after work on the new heads.

Heads done, opti siliconed and loctite, intake cleared and new TB gasket and pcv grommet, headers are at work, just gotta take my ORY pipe with me in the morning and a box of misc crap and I'll be ready to roll Saturday morning.... Gonna get my ass in gear and at work at like 6am lol. Haven't slept much all week..... Don't see me getting any tonight or tomorrow either.

Don't worry. It's got 17 inch American racing wheels torque 2's going on it soon enough. :-) but yeah I love these wheels. They came off my 99 convertible. Just been sitting in the shed all this time.

Saturday: 10 hours in. Had to measure pushrods and was waiting on a clutch.

Sunday: picked up the clutch and 7.28 pushrods. 98-04 grand prix 3800 pushrods matched right up. Complete swap with 2 of my buddy's took around 20 hours. Had to adjust my rockers Monday after work.... And a few odds and ends but it was running Sunday night and pulled out of the garage. Getting tuned Sunday and I gotta figure out why the speedo doesn't want to work now..... But it's almost ready to eat a few mustangs.

Yeah. I couldn't say no lol. I sold the fiero for $1500 and some guy drove 16 hours one way, loaded it up on a U-Haul trailer, and I grabbed the trans am. After everything I have done to it I have just about $2200 total in the car including buying it.

I used the vht spray. Theyre so delaminated I pulled em apart and cleaned out as much crap as I could. They were actually orange inside from all the crap that had built up and I couldn't fix the delaminate. Update: As some of you know the cam swap didn't go as planned. Made it about 80 miles and bottom end let loose one morning on the way to work. Spun 3 rod bearings. So I ended up tracking down a 95 motor with 42k miles on it. Ripped it apart and redid everything top to bottom except crank and pistons. Cylinders honed clean, new rings, all bearings replaced and oil pump with gm "white" spring. Took me around a month but she's back together and running good. Have an oil leak to track down.... I think the oil pressure sensor has a crack cuz the valve covers are closed and it coming from the back of the motor. And I'm fighting blms in the tune but I'm leaning towards the msd wires being an issue. Everything msd I've put in one of my cars always ends up being faulty lol..... I took it out for a 8-10 mile run. And changed the oil. Looked great, no metal, no major coloring, and smelled fine. After fighting my laptop for a week I finally got it to connect and tuned the PCM. Well after fighting a few sensors, my laptop, a few different tunes, and parts pissing me off........ She's finally alive and home. 28 miles on the new motor..... It wasn't even this clean after the cam swap...... It's sad when a complete motor build is spotless and a cam swap was nothing but metal lol. She's on 10w30 conventional now for 500-1000 miles. Then I'll decide on more conventional or going synthetic...... Might wait till I have 3-5k on it before I switch.

I have mixed feelings on this. When you told me you wanted to hack up a hood for a Shaker, I thought you were nuts. It is clean and doesn't look hacked. I like that it's different and you plan on making it functional. At the end of the day, it's your car and you're welcome to do anything you want.

So the car now has 600+ miles on the motor... No issues. Starts fine, runs great, no idle or fuel issues. So now on to the pretty stuff lol. So today she gets the ceta mod finally. 3 day weekend I could get so much done lol. Thought about just painting the borla tips black just cuz they're beat up.....
