It's been a few years since I bought cars out of state. Most of the time I was trailering, this time I'm flying out and driving home.

Years ago, I just took my plate and the DMV paperwork and drove on home. But I can't get any solid answers. WI says put the plate on, insure, fill out paperwork, and drive on home. I'll be well within the grace period to register.

The 2 cars I'm looking at are Michigan and Nebraska. Both are LT powered Vettes. Both are private sellers. I'd be flying out early on a Saturday morning and driving home the 7 or so hours (both are the same distance). So, no DMV open on Saturday.

I know once I'm in Wisconsin I'm legit, but nobody seems to be able to answer the question about other states.

I even tried calling the state DMV's, and got 3 different answers.

Anyone have any insite? Popo specifically, I know you're out east, but being a long term officer, you may have better advice based on how you would handle this if you pulled me over, not that I intend to be.

Or do I just fly out, slap the plate on, do the paperwork and insure, and roll on out, and toss caution to the wind? My biggest concern is the one in MI, because MI SP are known to be a little short tempered.

I was told I may have to do that in MI, too, but I'm going on a Saturday. No offices open to get one, and I have to be back to work Monday, so I can't sit there all weekend. But then someone else in the MI offices told me I only had to do what my home state required.

I would go to your local DMV and explain your situation to them so they can give you guidance and possibly the will give you an intranet sticker.
If you can not get any of that gave a bill of sale with you and the title..

If you're buying in Michigan you need in transit plate, so you'd have to go to dmv if you're going to drive it home.

Since I'll be transferring the tag from my last Vette, which is still good, do I still need the in transit plate to get out of MI?

That seems to be where I stumped the MI DMV.

When I purchased from out of state, I made payment prior to pick up... and the title would get mailed to me signed. I would then go to my local dmv and roll out with plate in hand.

Ur issue is that u dont know whoch vehicle u want... so u cant do that.

To be safe, u could always just register it in the state ur buying from with a temp tag. Have it put on ur insurance then transfew when u get home.

Maybe meissen can shed some light on MI.
