View Full Version : Best gears for an A4?

What kind of rear gears should I go with for my automatic 95 Z? Its my daily driver in the summer with no bolt on's or tranny work. I got 2.73's now and I'd like something a lil quicker (like 3.23's?), for when I hit the 1/4, and forall out better acceleration because these 2.73's suck. I remember reading that a high gear ratio like the 3.73's are bad for automatic transmissions because it puts more wear on it? Anyone got any ideas for me?
A 3.42 would be a good gear. Its about the same as the M6 guys going to a 4.10.
I have a 3.42 ring and pinion with 82k on em if you want em :)

Most people agree that 3.73s are best for autos and 4.10's for M6's.
You need to figure out your goals. Do you want it geared perfectly for your setup at the track or just fun for DD? Is gas mileage a concern? Are you going to have it on the highway a lot?
If you think 3.73 is too much I bet 3.42 would be perfect and it should be easy to find a used set in good condition as well.

I have 3.73 and ordered 3.73 for my S60 also. they are not too bad on the hwy and like mentioned before, what are your plans for the car?

I went from a 273 to I think a 323, but never checked it, could be a 342, but it picked the car up a lot.

3.42-3.73:1 seem to be the best from my experience 4L60E and definately have to have a 3k-3600 stall no matter what bolt ons:claps:

I want it to just be a fun DD that wont destroy my gas mileage. Any gear higher than 2.73's would give me an improvement at the track, however I have no stall converter and don't plan on upgrading that soon. I ran a 14.2 fully stock last summer with the 2.73's and now I have AGX adjustables all around, better tires, lingenfelter CAI and hopefully get full exhaust and a tune so I don't want to be wasting all my potential at the track through the lame ass 2.73's!

Awe.. .come one... you know you love trapping the 1/4 in 2nd gear :D
Ok...maybe your tires are too short for that. My 2.73'ed pickup does it though.
I pretty much decided on 3.42... for road tripping, and because I still want to be able to reach insane speeds.

I would not waste my time with a 3.23...that's what I had stock in my car and they were worthless...stick with 3.42 or 3.73. Personally I would just go the 3.73 route and be done with it...You don't need a new converter with gears..

I dont know how well an s10 and insane speeds go together. :shiner:
One of my friends tried that and it didnt end too well.
Bystander: That thing got a powerglide in it!?
Guy with 4L60E and 2.73: Nope, its a stock 4 speed.

I'd suggest going with 3.42's if you don't plan on racing it a lot and it's your DD.

Yea 3.73's don't sound good for me. My step dad has 3.73's in his 68 vette with muncie 4 speed and I'm like damn need a 5th gear on the highway. So 3.42's are best eh?

definately it is not, that is the avg. stall to get an Lt1 moving!
i would suggest doing a search on that topic........:hail:

YZF, are your 3.43's GM? Aftermarket? What do you think about putting used gears in my rear or should I just order a ring and pinion from Summit or something like that?

a search is where I got my info to begin with.lol. 2800-3200 is what I remember for a stock to bolt on lt1. although its always possible that the info that I found was incorrect.

Surprisingly well actually. Dead staight and smooth up to uhhh.... yeah....lets just say I topped 3rd
I can roll through the traps LOW in 3rd, or bump the limiter and trap 95mph in 2nd :D
Stall is nice... but I don't see how "easier" gears makes the stall necessary.

I think 3.73s would be just fine for you. You gotta remember theres a bit of a difference between an old 4 speed muncie and a automatic with overdrive. I think you'd be happy with the 3.73s

I have 3.90's in my car with a 3600 conveter and love it. Best two things i have done besides exhaust.

His car is a weekend car. Id vote for 3.73, if you drive any highway miles. The rpm can be annoying if you go too much higher on gears. Mine cruises 2400 at 60, so 3.90's or 4.10's are like 2600-2800 depending on your tire size. Its all about your setup when you pick your gears.

Some stalls are tighter than others. A cheap 3600 stall will behave similar to a good 3200 stall. I'd probably run a Yank 3200 in a bolt-on car.

Is this where I say 3.73s and a Vigilante 3600?
No but seriously? I'd go with a Yank 3200 and 3.73s assuming your just going to keep it a bolt on car.
But IIRC you weren't wanting to dump $$$ into the auto because you wanted to swap. If thats the case maybe you should look at 4.10's and tough it out till you swap. :)
