So I've had my 05 Xtreme 11 yrs, 190K almost mint considering the amount of times it's been hit none of which have been my fault. Well earlier this week a friend backed into me w/ his truck and boat anchor of a hitch. Insurance has totaled my truck which I can buy back. Parts to fix the truck with all gm parts 1600 bucks. Doing the work myself. I'll probably have 1K left over when all said and done. Have a friend who says keep it throw the 5.3 which I have in the shop and sell it w/ a salvage title for 10K and get walked down.

Here's the rub. I've been wanting a bigger truck ever since I bought this one 11yrs ago just so that I could tow the camaro to events etc. So I've found what I'm looking for but of course I'll have to come up with some coin. Could I drop the 5.3 in the Xtreme and then use it to tow? Absolutely but I think the truck has served it purpose and well...even after I just got done dumping 1200 in it 3 days before the incident.

The bigger truck will cost more in fuel but not much more in insurance as it's an 07. I wouldn't no longer be the daily like the Xtreme is just because of fuel but it'll serve other purposes for my profession which is great in addition to me picking up a 94 Protoge which will be the daily beater (Ex wife car which we sold to my parents 13 yrs ago which I bought back from earlier this yr.

So would you keep the Xtreme, fix and keep or sell it after fixed? I get compliments and offers on it ALL the time and maybe I should've sold it when offered 14K at the beginning of the yr.

Or sell it back to insurance, buy the 07 and keep it moving and use the 5.3 as back up?

Or buy the Xtreme back AND the 07, fix and sell the Xtreme hoping to offset the cost of buying the 07?

My real problem is I tend to keep what I buy and I like the Xtreme well love the damn thing as it's been dead reliable but damn it be nice to tow shit or have a little more room it's an Ext cab but still tight sometimes for the work I do. 07 is a crew cab.

Thanks for any imput!

I've always loved the extremes. A 5.3 extreme with a slightly beefed up frame/suspension to make it capable of towing a full size car and trailer would be the tits....

I'll have to research what's all involved beefing up the frame/suspension and costs. I know at minimum better brakes. Guess I'll just fix her and run her until the 3.5 pops as that was always the goal anyways. 19 oil changes and want to see if I can make it to 30 or 40 before pulling it out.

Id keep it. Ive seen the ltx motor swaps in the s trucks so its nothin unusual. But if u really like it y should keep it. I learned that lesson when i got rid of my home built 87 4x4. I loved it (bout as much as i love my 9c1) and have regretted gettin rid of it ever since it rolled away on the trailer.

AND that's what I was thinking too! It ain't happening, more than likely 6-7K unless the right buyer came along. Truth be told, I don't want the headache of going through the whole salvage title process though it's pretty easy here in FL from what I hear. I just really need bigger. I started w/ a sub compact truck, loved it but realized after it was wrecked I needed bigger so then came the Xtreme, perfect timing too while I was stationed overseas. Wasn't too big or small and performed well but once I got back stateside, even before then I wish it at least had a larger motor for towing even though the 3.5 has towed the SRZ before...scary but it did it. And it doesn't help this truck has been hit 5 times 4 were not my my fault. Only 4 reported though as the 1 I did myself I backed into a pole I couldn't see.

The 07 deal fell through, kid being an asshole for no reason so an 08 popped up. 1 owner, which I love, 117K miles on it and non smoker which I also love. So we'll see. Either way I've got to do something...rather keep some money in my pocket but if the right deal comes along I'll take it and make the money back up in other ways.

I say buy it back and just set it aside... get ur bigger truck to do what u want and let time dictate whether u fix it and motor seap it or fix it and just ise it as a beater till it pops. Either way... ur gonna have some money in ur pocket to put down on the new truck and the future can dictate the rest when the time is right.

Your in a tough spot. In my opion. If your not holding onto the vehicle because you valve it so much for what ever reason. I would cut my loss go get the bigger truck you want . If it makes more sense to take a vehicle and repair it you may have more value you can get out of it salvaged.
You may do so research on the value of a salvage titled car. So you can make an informed decision.

Keep it simple.
Sell it to the insurance and get the 07.
You have enough projects going on. How many cars including your house build? The Z, C6, house, and now the Xtreme with the 07?

If you keep it and put the 5.3 in, just keep it to fix and flip, or both you will end up keeping it. That's what would happen to me.

Now if if you don't mind more projects that will suck up money then keep it and get the 07. If not, try and prevent it.

383z, projects? House as it never finishes as we all know. Money pit til you die or you just quit trying to improve it and just maintain it as is. I'm almost at that point, 2 main projects with it and I'm done with it. The SRZ always a work in progress with it. The C5z...nope. Turn the key and go. Learned that lesson with the SRZ. Now I do have another project and that's my Mazda3 I need to refurbish and sell. So adding another with the Xtreme? Point taken. Thanks for that bit of insight.

The 07 fell through so I'm hoping the 08 I found doesn't flake on me too.

I got the 08! Pick it up next week then straight to the body shop for some minor repairs. Think I got a decent deal on it. 117K miles, 1 owner, ext cab SLE, 5.3, non smoking, killer sound system, new viper alarm installed along with a few other goodies. 11K. Was asking 13.5K but she needs some body work done. Around here they want almost 19K-21K for the exact same thing bone stock but I will admit w/ 70K on the odo. This one has some mods that I haven't even listed that are in the thousands.
