How can you tell if you have a 2 series or 3 series differentils?

If it's an ABS-only rear, the 2 series has a narrow reluctor gear, and the 3 series has a wide reluctor gear.

I believe 3.0x gears and up are 3 series, anything below is 2 series. Also 3 series ring gear is not as thick as 2 series.

That's (almost) all true if the car has remained unmolested since it left the factory. But after 22 years someone could have installed 3 series gears in a 2 series carrier by either using a spacer for the ring gear, or available thicker 3 series ratio ring gear that is made to fit in a 2 series carrier. The 2 series goes up to 3.08:1.

That is true for the 7.5 10 bolt. The 8.5 10 bolt is 2.93 and up for series 3 if I remember correctly.

Pretty sure he's asking about a 7.5/7.625 10-bolt.
