my 95 t/a with an a4 came with a trans temp gauge on the pillar. but it was never hooked up. it not mechanical and i didnt want to tap the pan and put a temp sensor in. i was told in the harness going to the trans their is a wire that i can tap into that reads the trans temp. is that true?

Nope. Easiest way is going to tap the pan and put the sending unit right into it.

the guy that dyno tuned my car said their is deffinately a wire. that seems the easiest way to me. and i dont have the sending unit for the gauge.

I'm not an A4 guy but I highly doubt our cars came with an input to the pcm for tranny temp

as stated, you're going to have to tap the pan

If it's a factory wire, how are the two going to communicate properly?

The best way to get the most accurate reading is going to be putting the sending unit in the trans pan. You could probably get one fairly cheap directly from Autometer. Another way I've seen this done is you can get a temperature manifold and install that in-line on the trans cooler lines before the cooler. Though this method is not as accurate...

There is a pressure test fitting on the drivers side. That's where mines going. Did a search and found a site where a guy put the sending unit there and had no problems.

.....when you read the scanner, there's a trans temp reading.....so there must be a wire, that you can tap into.

.....it's the yellow/black wire, coming out of the PCM. I just looked at the wiring schematic. :)

That's what I did on my '93 and it works great!

So ... has anyone tried tapping into the factory trans temp sensor wire? As stated above it's the yellow/black wire. Would an aftermarket gauge be able to read the signal from the factory sensor?

it's one wire.. i don't understand why you wouldn't just put the sensor in the pressure port and run it to the gauge... that way you know that you would have an accurate reading without possibly having to do it over again.

I just did a log with DataMaster and was discussing this directly on my website earlier today - there's a wire that goes directly to the PCM D28 - yellow black. I've read on other sites that it *might* not be 100% accurate but hey if the internal sensor is what the PCM is reading... :secret:
