The race season is about to commence and I need new shoes!

Our no prep airport race starts next month, so I am needing to know what would be the best Drag Radial?

I have narrowed it down to two different tires. The MT ET Pros or the Hoosier QTP?

I'm really leaning towards the Hoosiers as they are 8lbs lighter per tire than the MT. Also a buddy of mine has the MT and he doesn't like them at all for what we are goin to be doing.

Any tips?

QTP is not a radial. It's a bias-ply DOT tire.

I have ran the Hoosier Drag Radial and the Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial. Both hooked just fine but the Hoosier is the lighter of the two. I can't say one was better than the other because I made other changes at the same time so have no back to back comparison of just tires.

These are the ones I was referring to. Are they still a Bi-Ply? I can't seem to find where it says. And I was under the assumption they were radials for the 275 class? I could be mistakined. But Bi-ply tires are not allowed in the series we have coming up.

Yea, the reason I'm asking is a buddy bought the MT pro and he hates them. Told me to try the Hoosiers.

And BTW, why don't you come on over to Eastern KY and check out the Airport Drags next month! Its just like 2 hours from you. Show the boys there's more than one LT1 running around Kentucky that can whip LS ass!

Lots of mods is fun at one time, but I've recently learned it can be bad also. I messed up my 60' after a drag bar and front coilovers. Now I have to back track and figure out what has got me out of adjustment. :(

Yea I'm just goin by what he said. He says his car doesn't do very well with them. He likes the regular ET street radials better. The Gen 1's I think. But I need new tires to be competitive this year.

The major one is in Prestonsburg, ky. Its in Floyd county. Held at a local airstrip. 1/8th mile race.

A point series is getting started this year and we will have two new venues to race at for points. It includes the raceway on I64 near Morehead and it includes Pikeville, KY's little race event downtown. I'll find a link to the rules and dates and post in a few....

I switched last year from a MT DR to Hoosier of the same size (275/50/15) and like them a lot better. They hook better on the street and the track, but I rarely drive them on the street. The one thing that I love most is if you do get wheel spin the Hoosier's will recover way faster than the MT ever could. Usually once I lost traction with the MT's it was over, I would have to let off to regain traction where the Hoosiers I can stay into the throttle and they will regain traction on their own.

I found one of your posts from a year or so ago and was wondering if you made the switch. I'm asking around for pricing today. A local speed shop may be able to give me a deal on a set. I think I will give the Hoosiers a chance.

How do you do your burnouts? Long or short? Lots of water?

I heard an auto will run better times with a drag radial compared to a bias ply tire. Is this true?

IMO. It's in the suspension. There are plenty of guys going really fast with all the tires mentioned. It's hard to blame the tires when you see someone else that's fast, hooking and pulling the front wheels with the same tires. I'm upgrading suspension this year and switching from ET streets to the ET Pro's. We'll see what happens. Again, just my opinion.

I do one spin in the water box then roll out, short burnout depending on track temps. I found 21lbs to be best for good track conditions and have gone a best of 1.44 60ft. I've tried bias ply one day for three runs and didn't notice a huge difference.

This is what 21lbs looks like on the tire.

That's usually my burnout technique as well.

I think I have a head gasket blown, so after I finish fixing the engine I will order some Hoosiers and lets hope I have the same results that you've had.... :}

Thanks for your help everyone...

If you're currently running a radial I'd stick with it unless you want to buy new fronts as well.

I've also heard the common expression that autos tend to favor a radial and manuals a bias ply, can't say I have any personal experience to back it up though.

I currently run Bias-Ply tires front and back. But want to make the switch. I keep hearing radials are faster on an Auto....

M&H Racemasters. I know not in your choices, but man they grip hard! I am off the trans brake and a healthy shot, but I have run them all and by far this is the best I have run. Wifes car has the MT and she hates them.

That's a brand you really don't hear alot about. I was always curious if people used them or not.

I purchased the Hoosier DOT Drag Radial last night in a 275/60/15. I hope they do the trick at the local no prep event lol. Wish me luck....

Mystery Bird!! My tires wrinkle too!

I thought I'd let everyone know what I thought of the Hoosier DOT tires!

I love them! They worked amazingly well Saturday at the no prep event on an old run down air strip! I made one air pressure adjustment and turned the shocks up a few clicks and man they hooked perfect! I sprayed 30% at the hit and 100% of a 150 shot 1sec out!

The video I posted above is of a local favorite with lots of money invested. The car has the best money can buy pretty much. Supercharged 740 to the wheels plus nitrous. So it could have nearly 1000hp!!!!! So yes for the car to jump me and me run it down to take a car and a half win, I am tickled!!!!

I love my LT1!

Awesome! Glad it worked out. What kind of pressure did you end up running?

The first pass I was on motor trying to get the feel for the tires, maybe 21psi. It spun a little, kinda hazing the tires and I was a tad upset. So I went back to the pits and started checking my dragbar and my front shocks. Turns out the rebound on my shocks were like zero. So I adjusted them up and dropped air pressure to 15. And bam, started hooking almost from the initial hit. The tires started working and the car was a beast!

After the adjustment, on motor I jumped out on a procharged LS1 Trans Am two cars, then he had to reel me in to win. If I knew he was procharged I would have sprayed and kicked his teeth in, lol.

I'm going to finally try out my spray this weekend for the first time. I'm concerned my tires are going to be too small. I will definitely have to use fourth gear/overdrive.

LOL Kyle. I was fine tuning and testing the tires at that time. I'm learning my lesson tho. Don't take anyone for granted!

I love spray! Started spraying last year and it's so addictive.

With 3:73s in an A4, I was red lining through the traps with 26" tires. Another reason I had to buy tires.

Did the larger tires affect your NA times at all?

I don't know yet. I haven't been to the actual track yet. I will let you know tho. I hope I pick up just by going to a radial.
