View Full Version : Need picture of Walbro 255 installed from top of tank - Think shop is screwing me.

I took my 94 Z28 into the shop along with a walbro 255 to get installed, he called me back later telling me that the pump won't fit which I know it will and I didn't get sent the wrong part.

Anyways he said he could "make it fit" for $100 extra by trimming down the rubber part that the pump itself slides into, so I said whatever I just want the car running.

I dropped down today to see how it was going and he had it installed into the bucket and was putting it in the tank. What makes me think he ordered a factory pump is he turned on the ignition and the pump sounds like a factory pump, I've had a walbro 255 before and it has a loud whine to it.

Anyone know what the walbro 255 puts out without the regulator compared to a stock pump so I can check after I pick it up later and see if they actually did swap in the Walbro?

Thanks

100 bucks to trim something??? I think you got ripped right there, unless you have a DR. working on your car. BTW Ive had loud stock pumps also.

They charged the extra $100 not for the "trimming", more so because they didnt know what they were getting into when they changed the pump and used it as an excuse, he and I both know this - He just won't come out and admit it.

I just think it's weird how quiet the new pump is, I remember my old Walbro being loud.

For future reference: DIY. /thread. :D

If the whalbro is submerged fully, it'll sound like stock.

I see! Did they drop the tank or go from on top and make a trap door?

Dropped the tank, $200 is more than I really wanted to spend but it'll run now and was done right.

They gave it power with it just in the bucket, wasnt in the tank yet.

I would of did it if I had a garage that was finished, I'm not usually the take it to the shop type.

that right there would have made me pay the cost they quoted me and not a penny more, regardless of how much work they had to do extra.

Some people had to trim the fins inside the "bucket" to get the 255s to fit properly.
I wouldn't pay $100, it's like 7 min work with a dremel.

I did one of those installs this summer, the worst part was the bucket adhesive.
That crap burned pretty bad when I got it in an open wound on my arm.
Oh well, it stopped the bleeding LOL

To answer the original question, you probably won't be able to tell the difference from the sound.
At least, I couldn't. If you find yourself lean up top in dyno tests someday, you may want to check it.

I can't stand shops like that! personally i do not like the trap door mod,if GM wanted that there they would have engineered in that fasion! but that is a whole different topic......

Virtually every job requires a bit of fabrication or modifacation why tax someone for that...
Be sure they tightened your panhard bar

Yeah it's in now, very glad I didnt do the trap door method.

Car fires right up now even at 5 degree's outside and runs good.

I figure $200 to install it the right way wasnt too bad, could of been worse.

$200 isn't out of line. Figure most shops charge in the $50-$75 an hour range. I think if your droppiing the tank and getting the walbro pump in the basket thats a fair price. At one time when my opti went out I didn't feel like messing with the car at the time.(It was the wifes driver) I took it to a GM dealer and $1600 or $1800 later I had a new opti, plugs, wires, and waterpump.

But back to the original post I couldn't tell by the sound that I had a 255 pump. How many people can drop the tank and install a pump in less then 4 hours? exhaust, panhard bar, panhard bar cross brace, lower the rearend, and wrestle the filler neck out and back in.

Not to spam post but it took them about 2 hours to do everything, I was impressed by the quickness of the shop they just seemed a little "out of touch" so to speak but they knew there stuff, they just mostly delt with older race cars.

They bitched about the filler neck though haha
