View Full Version : 275/60 vs 295/55 pro's and con's

So many of you know that I'm working on my 8.8 rear and I have to decide how much I want to narrow. I want to tuck the tire under the car a bit and I like the look of the 295/55, 5.5" bs 10" wheel and narrowed to tuck. I just don't know if I "need" that much tire. I just figured if i made room for it, I'd have plenty of room for a good 28" slick if I need it.
With the 275 I won't have to narrow quite as much, the problem is if I would ever need anything bigger I wouldn't have enough room.

Have you also checked tire prices in the 295 vice 275?
I bought a Hawk that had 295's and I went back to 275's.

No, I actually haven't compared, I guess if I kept everything setup for the 275 I could also run a 275/50 if I wanted and not look stupid. I like to keep options open.

My wheels are 18s... but still a 315 all under the car in the rear. Minor modification to fit. Next round will be 325s for me.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160117/570e8b3e57c7b537c1078233e0cb4176.jpg

Lil different for you though, Popo, a drag tire has a totally different type of sidewall with allot more bulging and either of my two tire choices are 28" tall, yours are prolly around 26".

Using the 10" wide wheel with a 5.5" offset, and narrowing the rear 2" per side would end up with the wheel in the exact same position as my stock width 12-bolt w/ 10" wide, 7.5" BS wheels. This is an M/T ET Drag 28x10.5-15W. It is 28.1" diameter, 13.1" wide. By comparison (assuming M/T ET Street Radial):
295/55:
-diameter = 27.8"
-width = 12.0"
That would put the outside edge of the tire about 1/2" deeper in the fender, compared to the photo.
275/60
-diameter = 28.0"
-width = 11.0"
That would put the outside edge of the tire about 1" deeper in the fender compared to the photo.
Also note that M/T uses an 8" wide wheel to measure the 275/60.
Narrowing 3" (1.5" per side) instead of 4" would move the 275/60 back to within 1/2" of the photo, but as you already realize, that limits you when looking to go wider on the tires.

For perspective here is mine on a 325-45-17 on a stock length Dana S60. Bottom front of wheel well tapped back 1/2" to clear the 28 tall tire. Factory bump stops cut back. On Coil overs and fenders rolled.

Ok guys, so after much much reading I think bias tires will be going on my car. I'm a little bit leary because I've never really driven on bias tires and don't know what go expect.
I'm keeping the 6 speed so I'm thinking 27x11.5 Hoosier QTP and Moroso 26" DS2's on the front. You guys have any opinions or pointers?

Fred, I would like more side profile and 1/4 panel clearance pics if you have them. I hear that Birds have a lil more room in the 1/4's than us Camaro guys have.

Wide enough to clear a 315 without rolling or hammering, if that helps. But they were only 35 series, going taller next time to fill in some of the gap. I love how tall Injuneer's rears are.

My street wheels are the replica ZR1/GS 17x11's, 50mm offset, with a BFG 315/35-17 Drag Radial. At first, I did not roll the fender lip. But (when the car still had the T56 and Street Twin) on really hard shifts, the body would torque sideways hard enough to put the lip against the sidewall. Then I rolled them.
Buddy of of mine had the same street wheel/tire setup on his 30th Anniversary SS, and I'm pretty sure he had the fender lips rolled from day 1. He had no problems with rubbing on the street tires with the lip rolled.
