While a car fire isn't super common, it's always been a fear of mine. Whether it be a full on accident or just a random fuel line problem, I want to be somewhat prepared for the worst. I've read of cars burning completely to the ground for basic types of issues and I wanted to be able to do something before the pros arrive. Short of a full halon system, I wanted an easy to get to, decent size and quick-release fire extinguisher setup. I will admit I was guilty of tossing in a little red extinguisher I had around the house for general trips with the car. Not only did I have no idea if the thing was good but in an accident, it would become an unfortunate projectile.
The pics below are what I went with. Hopefully I never need to use it.

Nice work. I also carry around a 10# ABC extinguisher in my car for the exact same reason. I've seen a few cars burn, one in particular could have been put out with just a few squeezes. But you are correct, it would be a projectile in an accident. I need to make some billet aluminum pieces with some cam locks for quick disconnect.

What did that run you if you don't mind asking? I need to purchase one and don't really know what is a good one for a car ?

Thanks! I've never seen a car burn in person but this is one of those things I should have done a long time ago.

The extinguisher was $75 from Summit and ABC rated. The damn bracket was just about as much as the extinguisher lol. All in all, I have about $150 in this setup. I found some other potentially cheaper options I figured this will hopefully be a one time purchase so what's a few extra bucks.

I met up with a guy that was trading a pcm for a set of heads. His car had been running bad, he was running behind, and as I'm sitting in the parking lot waiting he comes up and taps on my car window and says his car is on fire. We run over to it and it's got a little smoke coming out from between the cowl and hood. I could hear the firetruck coming as he was getting ready to pop the hood and I told him to wait until they got there. All he had was a bottle of water and I didn't think that was going to be enough to put it out after it got a big gulp of oxygen.

Most of the rest were just carb fires caused from backfires.

I've always felt that if it wasn't something I couldn't handle with a 10 or 15# extinguisher it's not something I have control over at that point.
It was pretty well burnt to a crisp under the hood. He said it had been overheating and it sounded like he had a fuel leak as well by the way he was describing the problems he had been having. All good reasons why we should carry them even in daily drivers. If I had mine in my car I think we could have saved it or at least minimized the overall damage. Live and learn.

Some local guy with an lt1 car had his catch on fire about 3 weeks ago as well.
Thanks for the link. Gonna buy one later today or tomorrow
We have one in the Corvette. Won't do much since it never leaves the garage [emoji38]

I bought a new one just to temporarily have in my car so I can get something decent with a mount. Too much new wiring with my car to risk not driving without one. Despite almost everything having a fuse and cleanly soldered and wrapped wires, you just can never be too careful.

Excellent advise. All ofnour patrol cars have extinguishers in the trunk... not mounted... in 14 years... ive had 2 bounce around and go off in the car. In the impala it was not that bad cause it was a trunk... but in the old blazer... it choked me out at 80mph.... i had to call off a pursuit because it filled the whole interior.
