The time has come for my parents to get a new vehicle. They are looking at trading in their 2004 Mercury Mountaineer on the mew vehicle.

The book on the mountaineer is about 4k in "good condition." Some of u may re member the recent rust debacle I went through trying to get this fixed for them.

Anyways... the mec jas 102k on it. Fully loaded, moon roof... awd... v8...leather... etc. 5 door in pearl white, and it runs excellent.

Both rear quarters are going to require rust repair. Im guessing about 2k worth of repair.

Well here is where i need ur help. My mother offered to trade us for the wifes winter vehicle and they would trade that in... instead.

The wifes winter vehicle is a 2003 Ford Explorer Sport. The 3 door shorter explorer. It is well optioned... but no moon roof... it has the 6 cyl in it (recently got a stumble during idle. Im guessing a coil took a shit... need to have the SES light scanned). Anyways... im still driving it now with the "misfire." The sport has 132k on it.

So do we do the trade... there are pros and cons to go either way.

Pros for Merc:

-V8 vs Expl V6 (faster than expl)

-newer

-lower mileage

-leather vs cloth

-moonroof

-newer

-less miles.

PROS FOR EXPLORER

-Smaller and easier for her to drive

-No rust (I hate rust & rust repair...and thats a big issue for me)

-Like the look of the sport over the merc.

I dont think fuel mileage will make that much of a difference... since the sports 6cyl drinks it, since she has a heavy foot to make it go faster.

She complains the sport is not fast enough... but that comcerns me to give her a v8.

The merc is longer and i know she is more comfortable in the sport.

Im at a loss. If there was no rust on the merc... this would be a no brainer.

Any ideas???

Trade with them, they are your parents [emoji14]
V8 won't be faster than the 6.. heavier car and it's a Ford.

Serious time:
What would they get if they traded the merc in? maybe 2600 because of the rust..
That's a tough decision dood

Actually its pretty damn quick with the v8.

Yeah.. we figure the trade will be pretty much the same.

Im getting alot of negative info about the mercs problems after 100k on my similar fb post. Transfer case issues... trans issues.... manifold bolt issues.

My brother has a 2002 Buick rendezvous.. He's had plenty of problems with it as it approaches 100k.
I could see the merc having bearing issues in the future.. Every car will have manifold bolt issues.
If the car has been taken care of, it should be fine I would hope.

I'd say let them trade the merc in... and pray they get a good chunk. You already have one money pit [emoji14] you don't need another.. :D

Already have an escalade for me...

This about keeping what she has for her winter driver or swapping with my parents.

I highly doubt your parents would get more on a trade in with the explorer. Then again, for a car that is driven 3-4 months a year.. there isn't anything wrong with a rust bucket..

ADD brain gives me multiple ideas and suggestions

I wouldn't let my wife drive a ford, especially in the winter.

Thank you for input... to those who actually gave input. lol

I would find out what the best trade-in vehicle would be and take that route. If the dealer senses the motor may be hurt due to a misfire, you will likely get what it's worth in scrap given it's over 10 years old. I'd let them trade the merc in or sell it privately.

Personally, I would dump the Explorer and go with something comparable in the GM lineup. The Trailblazer with the 5.3 is no slouch. The Tahoe/Suburban/etc around 2000-2002 body styles are CHEAP nowadays. I know you said "I already have the Escalade for me" but this isn't about you, it's about your wife and freeing her from the Ford shackles :)

Thank u for the suggestions to get something else... however people... that was not the question. As for the misfire... id fix it, was only stating it as a fact is all.

And ur right its not for me... its for my wife... either between her current sport... or the mountaineer... like i wrote in the initial post.

Well... on my drive home tonight I decided... we are keeping the sport. Its more her size, and easier for her to drive. That rust is really a deal breaker for me... esp since we have recently found some comin up on the opposite side.... thanku for everyone who took the time... even if there was more ball busting than anything.

I mean, if you LS swapped the Explorer I guess it could be "ok" to drive...

Hahaha, good choice on staying away from the rust. I HATE rust, as well.

Curious Popo do they salt the roads in PA like they do here in Michigan? Fucking stuff eats cars

I believe they use cinder and salt in PA. Pretty much a salt mix and it destroys paint and metal over time.

Without repeating all the good points of ditching both FORDS,

Good choice, You would have been chasing that rust for the life of the vehicle, and not just in that spot. Brake lines power steering tyranny lines ect.

I'd do the trade and let them trade the explorer in. Reason being, it it's the v6 in thinking of, the timing chain guides are notorious for failure and it's a motor pull to replace. Nd it starts with a misfire.

On my LG G4
