I sold the supercharger a while back on e-bay so this has turned into my build thread while trying to convert my car over to turbo.

You can get 14-15 psi out of a Vortech, just not an S-Trim. I traded my S in for a T and am now pushing 14.8 psi @ 6400RPM according to the data logger. I had to have ASP build me a custom crank pulley to make that much boost but I'm just saying you can get that much out of a Vortech and it may cost you less than changing to turbo.

I've comtemplated going turbo too. Good luck with your decision.

blowers are really cool but turbos take the cake, just my opinion!

I was thinking that if I have to spend more money on pullies and another head unit than I might as well sell it and start on a turbo kit. I would lose money on the supercharger kit but I would have a good start on a turbo kit. And I agree turbos do take the cake... I use to have a turbo and kick myself everyday for getting rid of it.

Ok guys I just took off the supercharger this weekend and did what I could to make sure the whole kit was there. So I'm going to put it up for sale. I took some pictures of everything so I will have them posted on here soon.

Nice pics, but have a question about your radiator support mods. Why is the bar so far back on your plates? You intending to put the radiator in front of that bar?

i agree you'd be better off like mine, how you have it now looks to be about as much room as if you wouldve left the stock crossmember in there

I likey that one! Nice bends! I did mine with square tubing as far forward as I could get it per opening dimension.

But if the OP is planning to have the radiator out in front of the bar... Say with a pin-down hood, it would be pretty unique and probably work out for more room altogether.

Divine02
05-13-2009, 06:05 AM
Actually the bar sits slightly in front of the radiator. It just happen to work out better this way. I would have liked to set it farther forward but I wouldn't have been able to bend the pipe with a torch and still made it look good. I would have ruined it. But I agree with you guys. But it's still much farther back than where the origional radiator sat. Gives me all kinds of room

Divine02
05-13-2009, 06:24 AM
I will get more pictures of the radiator once it is sitting in the car. It sits as far forward as everybody elses. But the big problem was getting the intercooler back far enough away from the bumper cover so there was plenty of air coming from underneath the car. I'm actually putting the fog lights back on and most of the air will be coming from the bottom. Thats what the big sheet metal box is for on the front. This car will look really close to stock inside and out.

EXACTLY!!! Well I just need new bearings and gaskets and rings. And I need to hone the block again and figure something out on an oil pump. It's not doing a good job of getting oil to the front of the motor. Didn't hurt the crank though.

Back in the day I used that paint on my intake. But that was back when I was N/A. For the period of time it was on my intake I had no issues with it (it was on there for about 4 years).

Project looks great man! When I see threads like yours here it makes me wish I didn't hate wrenching on things so much. And I also wish I had the know how to do everything down to the block, as projects like yours in this thread are purely what dreams are made of.

The bbq hi temp paint at home depot works very well. You need to apply heat to it to get it to cure onto the metal. It lasts for awhile too (assuming fluids don't get on it like oil or coolant).

At least your build is going better than mine, I am also going from a supercharger to turbo, I purchase a kit about 3 years ago from Pro Turbo systems in San Antonio that ripped everyone off then went into hiding. Finally started installing the kit on my new motor and the first thing we noticed is that the #5 plug is just about hitting the headder, This is just the plug, once I put the wires on the plug boot will definitely be jammed up against the headder pipe so I am up a creek and do not know what to do. A shot plug might help but I cannot find anyone other than accell that makes shorty plugs, I called NGK and they dont and I haven't checked if Accell even has the heat range that I need. I ordered a Extreme Heat shield that was $41.00 for one!!But you know after a while it is still going to burn thru the boot...So I am screwed for now..

I have not actually called champion, I have been doing a search and there are people that give part numbers to NGK's, Autolite and champions, then someone else will chime in and say that those plugs are not shortys, I spoke to NGK and they said they don't make a short style plug but then on the forums people say thay have NGK shorties so go figure?? But Thanks I will call up Champion and ask them for my self..Thanks again for the info...

Another thing you could try is heating up the header with a torch and pulling it in a little bit with a C-clamp. Just a thought. I don't know how far it has to be moved. I guess it would basically just put a dent in the header. Just enough to get around the boot.

There is already a pretty good dent there in the pipe, Pro Turbo System did this and knew that this was a problem area but refused to redesign that headder pipe. Without building a new headder I just don't see anyway around it..Thanks though...

Well it looks like you will be finished well before me. I am very interested in the results, Power, Boost lag, Boost comparison ect. I had a D1, 383 LT, fully built and made 648 RWHP / 712 TQ on the junk gas and 722 RWHP / 713 Tq on the Fast Gas. I had instant boost, great drive ability and this was at 12lbs.I never was able to run a full quarter at full power due to broken trannies when it was an A4, then I went six speed and blew up 4 clutches. The best mph with a very bad slipping clutch was 138 mph though the ET was 11.3. I have now completely rebuilt the motor to the same specs less cam and of course with a 76mm front mount with headders. I am hoping for app 750 + RWHP. Let us know how it compares.

Jon I gotta say you did a hell of a job gettin those parts fabbed up outside of a car. I put all the parts on tonight and I have a few clearance issues but they're not that bad. I had to do some work to clear that Canton oil pan. That Canton pan has caused me nothing but trouble. And I have to put a few dents in the dump pipe from the turbo just to clear a couple of things. And I've decided it would probably be a good idea for me to buy a turbo blanket and use header wrap on the exhaust out of the turbo. I thought I was gonna have this car goin a few months ago but it's just one thing after another around here. But I've decided I really need to set a goal for this car. After checkin out your website I've decided I want to try and be the fastest car on there.
Oh and by the way I really like your turbo formula in your signature.

I really don't know if the dashhawk will work or not. It says it should work with any OBD2 vehicle. I actually just got it in today. It's very small. We've started plantin corn so my time working on the trans am are few and far between. I did take some time to build a bracket that bolts to the right head and i've mounted my breather catch cans to it. Looks good I think. I'm going to try and get back to work on the electrical part of it this weekend. I need to wire up my MSD ignition, ZEX nitrous solenoid, boost controller and get all the wiring hid the way I want it.

Did you get a gate from me when you ordered the hotparts? if so, it was a JGS 40mm gate. If not JGSS sells a 40mm JGS gate (same gate I used on my 383ci T76 setup).

Just received all my mandrel bend pipe I ordered a few days ago. I went through it pretty quick. Used almost every piece I had. It's the builders kit from mandrelbendingsolutions.com I think they have good prices on mandrel bend pipe. The intercooler pipes are all 3 inch and the air inlet into the turbo is 4 inch with a filter that really is to long but I made it clear everything so I guess it will work. My used Greddy blow off valve was chrome and that had to go. I can't stand chrome. So I painted it black. I'm still waiting on parts that are on back order. Still gotta buy injectors and a wastegate. It's gettin close.

I've thought about that. No place around here to get powder coating done. I like the welded look so I don't know if i'm gonna grind it down or not. But theres only 1 weld that you can see from the top so I might go ahead and do it. Another thing that is bothering me the pipe from the intercooler to the throttle body is kinda heavy. So I think i'm gonna weld on an exhaust hanger that bolts on in the factory hole where one of the horns bolt on. Other than that i'm pleased with it. I've still gotta weld a pipe sticking out to mount the BOV and weld in a couple of bungs. Ain't got much farther to go. I'm shooting for the end of June but it's all about money right now so we will see what happens. I may have to do the mail order tune if I'm wanting it done by at the end of June. But I'd really like to take it to a dyno.

The difference in size is the valve/opening of the wastegate. The bigger it is, the easier it is control the boost. I think you will be fine if you want to push 8+ psi. I run a 383ci T76 and I hold 8psi with a 40mm JGS gate. I always offer the choice to upgrade to a bigger gate (more $$ of course).

I work for a reman company and I watch those pipes blow off on the dyno all the time cause they are to lazy to weld up the bead. So i'm definately gonna weld mine up more than I already have. As far as the wastegate goes.....I'm really wanting to see if I can push 14psi. Not all the time but around 8-10 on the street.

I yanked my engine the other day to toss in the 383. After seeing this I wanna get outta bed and go do work on it. Nice job, looks sick.

Wait....you're selling because you're having a kid? Is that really necessary, or just precautionary?

I can't remember off the top of my head what kind of fans they were but they just do barely fit and they were hard to find to fit that radiator. I wired them into the factory wiring. I know there are a few pictures of the fans and the boxes they came in somewhere in this build thread.

As of right now its very very necessary. I'm willing to hear offers on it.

Still selling it?I'm kinda holding off at the moment. I'd really like to keep it if at all possible. 5,300 is giving it away and I'd feel really dumb for doing it. I sure would like to finish it this winter.

don't sell it man. $5300 doesn't cover the cost of the work you put into it or the money obviously. Keep that car so your kid can drive it when he or she gets old enough. Just seems like a waste to give it away for nothing. Obviously prioritize, but if you didn't have the car to begin with, you'd have nothing to sell, so just don't sell it! I've thought about selling my car too, but I've put a lot of work and money into mine, but no where near as much as you have!!

I know what you're saying. But I'm having a kid and I'm moving and will probably only end up with part time jobs. I will not have a garage and I know the car will never be finished. It's funny how everything works out. I use to work as an engine division field service manager at the engineering headquarters for Navistar. Biggest truck manufacturer in the world. I partied naked just once and now I'm going to be working a shift at Taco Bell. Talk about turning your life upside down.

Man, that really blows. Well, I've never even had a good job yet, but when I do I'll put partying naked on my list of things not to do. Sorry to hear about all that. If I was near you, I'd sell my car just to buy your car and finish it! You've already spent the big money on the big parts.

Taking a trip down memory lane. I thought I'd mention I sold this car for $3800 I believe it was. I've slept since then. Gave it away.

Great thread..... You sold it because you had to for the family, I respect that.... It's just a car. Your priorities are in check!! I'm 50 now and can afford to throw money away at my car.... I can admit now that I was racing in my 20's and 30's trying to raise a family when I should have put the car up on jack stands!!!

i sold my Pro Charger and T56 this summer and my car is back up on jack stands.... Going turbo and T400..... LOL, seems I'm never happy!!

my son is building a 80 Camaro TT 540..... I warned him from that start that you will NEVER recover what you spend on it.... It's been 3 years and over $50K and it's still not done..... Good thing is he is not going in debt to build it and he plans on never selling.... LOL.....

again..... Great build thread!!
