Hey guys and gals, thought I'd throw this on here from another forum.

So, some history on the car. The car came from Florida in 2007. According to the PO, the guy was in in 60s. It had A HUGE service history from when it was down in Florida. The car is 99% rust free :) It came to Michigan with around 85k miles in 2007. It is at approximately 107k now. The PO, who was in his mid 20s, put those ugly ass silver shitty quality emblems you see on the car. I put the regular black ones on the sides, and am looking for a custom one for the back. It also had COMPLETE blackout tail lights. I just replaced them yesterday. All the indicators are blacked out too, I'm debating if i want to remove the tint. Brake Fluid supposedly removes it.
In case you are wondering, "NYTRDR" is like rider of the night.. I like to drive a lot at night. Michigan roads are always busy during the day, and I find some people annoying :D So it's nice going out at 2 am, and enjoying the fresh air and smell of burning rubber.

This is my first car, I love it to death, but sometimes I hate it.. LT1 problems right..?

So what is wrong with the car! I had some cooling problems this past september. When I bought the car, the Water pump started to leak, so it was replaced. So the water pump was replaced in April 2014. In May of 2014, I overheated on my way home from a Meet N' Greet. The radiator cap was shot, and sucked in a shitload of air. So, I installed a manual fan switch, new cap and it ran good. All great all summer, until September 2014. I burned a spark plug wire on my way home, so I went OTVC. All groovy for a week or so. Then I started over heating AGAIN. Did what I should have done when I did the water pump.. replace the thermostat. I first checked it, it would barely open, so ordered a SLP 160. After that was installed, it ran nice, real nice. It was around late October when I started overheating again. Coolant was coming out of the radiator, and the overflow. I decided to pull the radiator out. It was from 99, so I figured it should be replaced. When I did the water pump the first time, the coolant was a brownish yellow color, wasn't healthy at all. I figured the PO had leaks, and put some stop leak shit in it. The radiator was clogged, on the driver side. So +1 for replacement.
Well, I get the radiator installed, super excited to get the car running again. I pour the coolant in the radiator and BAM, leaking out the water pump. I was so puzzled, so i checked the bolts on the pump, and dingaling ding, the 2 of 3 on the passenger side was loose, and 1 on the driver was loose. Couldn't believe it. I tightened them up, knowing it would only be a temporary fix.
I also discovered something that I'm pretty damn happy about! The good ol' optispark was replaced by the dealer sometime ago. It looks like it says Aug 16, 2007 or 2001. Either way, the Carfax showed it got a shit load of miles in the first 4 years. I think it was already at 40k in 01. So, either the Optispark is 60kish miles old, or only 15k miles.

So where is NYTRDR now! Well she's in the garage. Today, I pulled the water pump off. Have to get the o-ring that goes on the water pump shaft though, the part# 12553792, so I'll call up the dealer.

I have a bunch of other things I'm adding to the car, strut brace... other goodies.
TL;DR: 19 year old bought a rust free 97 Z from a mid 20s kid who put stupid emblems on it. It has had cooling problems but he cool as fuq.

Figured I'd give an update. Well it's not an update sadly. I've been sick, so I haven't been to the garage. College said Norovirus has been going around, hope I didn't get it.. Should be starting again tomorrow hopefully.

Hope u feel better. Btw: excellent write up.

Dan

I come bearing good news. I put the pump on last night, and put her all together today. Turned the car on, love never felt so good.
Did some interior work too.
3222232223
I dropped one of the strut tower nuts while attempting to fit a strut brace... It is long gone.. So if anybody knows the size, that'd be great!

The exhaust was a little smokey. I'm guessing because the car hasn't ran in 4.5 months. I'll throw up a video.

Get it up in the air and figure out where its coming from. Not normal to just have an oil/coolant mix on the ground coming from a car that was just stored. Keep us posted on what the shop finds.

Dan
03-23-2015, 07:22 AM
I was going to be changing the oil a few days ago, so I was looking around the oil pan and noticed it was moist. I had the gasket and rear main seal done this past April.
But to be honest, I'm going to pull some plugs and go from there. I checked the oil, and it was maybe 3 holes over filled. The oil was like a milky yellow color. I knew it was coolant, what else could it be... Sorry didn't make it clear. Wasn't too happy yesterday, but now I'm fine. I'm just happy I have a great family, who like the car as much as I do.
Now to find a shop.. school > camaro :)

Dan
03-27-2015, 04:47 PM
Long story short boys and girls, I was a dingus. Head gaskets are OKAY as of today. Now, my problem with the car besides the leaky water pump was air in the coolant lines. I'm bleeding it to Shbox.com's directions. But this last time, I had it at a shop, a damn good shop. Background on them, they work, no specialize, on C1-C3 Corvettes and other classics.
So I'm coming home today, and the temp gauge starts climbing. I IMMEDIATELY pull over, pop the hood, no coolant anywhere. Open the bleeders, there is air. Not a lot, but a bit.
I've had so many problems lol people probably get confused. Where could I possibly have an air leak at? Could it be one of the bleeder screws not forming a tight seal? Another thing, I noticed the sensor on the WP had some moisture on it... I tightened it a little bit before and haven't noticed anything on it since. Any ideas on how air is getting in?
-Improper bleeding is one, I'll bleed it again.
-Radiator cap is new. Never replaced the overflow one though.
-Haven't noticed any leaks but I'll check again
-Radiator is new
Hit me with some ideas guys and gals!

Pressure test the coolant system and you will find the leak

SSlowBoat
03-27-2015, 11:23 PM
FYI the upper bleeder on the Heater hose is on the suction side of the pump. If you open it car running you can suck air back in and make your issue worse. Get it hot shutdown and bleed. Pumps will only push so much air. Foam is hard to get rid of once you get it

Dan
03-28-2015, 12:02 PM
TubbyFormy , I never thought of that! So should I still open the one on the WP while the car is running?

SSlowBoat
03-28-2015, 12:03 PM
I don't open either unless it's hot and off, I got tired of chasing my tail with it

Dan
03-28-2015, 12:05 PM
Hell, I'm tired of chasing my tail too. I'll try it today or tomorrow.. Its freezing in Michigan again

popo8
03-28-2015, 02:16 PM
Do a youtube search. I believe i remember one on how to bleed an lt1 specifically.

Dan
03-28-2015, 02:34 PM
I'm sure there is, I'll check it out just for the reinforcement. I've always been opening them up with the car running. And I have to check the recovery tank as well. Which might be low. So I'll top the radiator off and check the recovery tank.
It's 33 degrees outside now. Tomorrow it is supposed to be 69 (lol 69). Welcome to Michigan.

Edit: Now it says 45 for tomorrow. :( I wanted the warmth!

Dan
04-03-2015, 09:24 AM
Well an update because I know so many people are following :)
I had a coolant leak again, and I put it under pressure and it had a minor leak in two spots. At the coupling to the flow valve control on the lower heater hose, and the coupling at the bleeder up top. So I ordered a new heaterhose assembly. Won't be putting it on till a couple weeks but I'll be sure to shoot some pics! I'm going to replace the radiator hoses too.

Dan
04-08-2015, 07:23 PM
Parts came in today :D Will post up pics when I get it completed whenever it doesn't rain.

^^ This is where it was leaking before.

popo8
04-08-2015, 08:24 PM
Well thats a good find man... take pics of the swap
Keep that opti dry as well.

Dan
04-08-2015, 08:28 PM
Plan on it, with the help of the opti-gods, I should be fine.

popo8
04-08-2015, 09:19 PM
Dont be afraid to set rags across the opti to buybu a buffer in case u spill something.

Dan
04-11-2015, 04:52 PM
Alright, well I ran into a problem. A stupid problem. So the bolt that holds the metal pipes that are part of the heater hose, well it doesn't want to come loose. To make matters worse, there is almost no room to get at it. To make it terrible, it's a stupid the bolt has an allen head on it. WTF GM? I'd like to meet the dingus who decided that a regular bolt would not be suitable.

32470
There it is, hard to see sorry. The A/C compressor is really in the way. I didn't think I'd have to remove it, but it looks like I may have to. Any ideas?

Dan
04-12-2015, 04:57 PM
Got the son of a bitch off, sorta... I ended up just prying and breaking the metal clip thing. God damn it was a pain in the ass. Will hopefully finish it off tomorrow.

Now I have to figure out the oil leak.. It's coming from the back of the engine near where the trans and engine meet. I believe it's the rear main seal, or the oil pan gasket again. It's a shame, it's just been replaced as of a year ago this month.

Dan
04-16-2015, 11:54 PM
Every thing is in... Finished it on Wednesday...
I was too nervous to fill it with coolant and start it.. :(

Dan
04-18-2015, 10:29 PM
So I have a question. BEFORE I started having all these problems. When I would go out to start the car, if I turned the key on, let all the lights come on, but then turn it off, it made a vacuum sound. It doesn't do it anymore however. Was that vacuum sound for the Optispark or do I just have a possessed car? Sorry if it doesn't make sense...

popo8
04-19-2015, 04:26 AM
Im not aware of anything that would make a vac sound for the opti... u sure ur not hearing the fuel pump prime?

Dan
04-19-2015, 06:32 AM
That's probably what it would be. Just wondered since I don't hear it any more

Dan
04-23-2015, 11:07 AM
car is running groovy.
Couple questions:
My clutch pedal clicks almost every time I push it in. Its annoying as hell.. This the result of a clutch throwout bearing?
Also, my security light has been on for about 8 months. I haven't had any starting problems so I believe VATS is not the problem. I tried both keys, light still on. Is there a way to reset it? Like leaving the ignition on for 20 min.
Thanks!

popo8
04-23-2015, 04:50 PM
Ur gonna have to bypass the vats... or tune it out. Eventually... it wont start. I hear licking the chip can get u going in a bind (no bs... it was in another thread.)

Dan
04-23-2015, 05:22 PM
I'll add doing the bypass to my list.. Will that at least turn off the security light?
Also got my hurst shifter. Shout out to Fastbird What a nice guy, didn't expect it to come in. I was honestly thinking it'd come in like next week or something.

popo8
04-24-2015, 01:24 AM
The bypass should kill the light. Yes.

Dan
04-24-2015, 10:38 PM
Put the new shifter in. 1000000x times better.
Back story, I was having trouble having trouble hitting gears. Turns out, the bolts for the shifter were barely finger tight. I never looked at the shifter before, I wouldn't ever leave bolts that loose.
But I really dig this new set up.

Dan
05-08-2015, 01:11 PM
Figured I'd give an update on my ride to anybody that sees this. It's going along good. Thanking the camaro gods I have ttops because I haven't filled the a/c system yet.
I was going to have a y-pipe made for my shorties, but decided not to. Instead I'll be installing some LTs this winter. As well as do a full break service.

Pray to the LT1 gods with me, "We will not let Dan's camaro have anymore problems!"

popo8
05-08-2015, 04:09 PM
Lol... good luck!

Dan
05-08-2015, 11:03 PM
P0137 code popped up. Bank 1 sensor 2 low voltage. I smell a tune out in the future..
P0140 I think showed up before. Which is no activity at all.. Post Cat o2 sensors don't calculate fuel air ratio right?
Also getting P0410 which is secondary air injection system. That is for emissions. I'll double check to see if it is even plugged in :D
P1441 Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) System flow during non-purge. I replaced the sensor for it, only for me to break it, so I'll replace it again and see if that fixes it. Is the EVAP emissions related..I know it says it in its name, but is it important.
Should be doing the VATS bypass too someday.
Thanks :D

I hate the CEL, been on since I've owned the car.

And thanks popo8 you the man!

popo8
05-08-2015, 11:09 PM
Yes... u can tune out the post cats

popo8
05-08-2015, 11:10 PM
What state donu live in... evap is part of emissions... but that can be tuned out ... (in my case the only evap i could not tune out was the evap solenoid code... so i plugged the noid back in with not equipt on the other end of it.. and the lite went out. Lol

Dan
05-08-2015, 11:14 PM
I'm in Michigan. No testing or inspections.
Since I still have the Cats, would it be a bad idea to tune it out or no? I have no idea how tuning works lol.

popo8
05-08-2015, 11:18 PM
I tuned mine out when i got my car... well actually i put simulators in there... since i had an o2 go bad.

If ur not planning anymore mods...id tune it out. If u are... id wait to do the tune for everything.

Dan
05-08-2015, 11:23 PM
thank you sir. I think I'm done with mods for the year. Really want to just drive, and have fun with it.
I should say no major mods. Of course I'll still be looking for a complete 97 black leather interior. Ill just need a bit more money though. I'm picky lol.
I know of a local tuner near me, forgot his prices on code tune outs. Wasn't too bad.

popo8
05-08-2015, 11:32 PM
Well have him delete all ur emissions stuff... and tune out vats... have him set the fans to come on earlier (like 170) and get a 160 thermostat... i had Nick on here do mine for the ta... he even raised the redline... adjusted the shift points... ser it up for the larger wheels and tires... and the 3.73 gears... threw a lil timing at it... raised the idle and she runs and drives better than ever...with 190k on the odometer.

popo8
05-08-2015, 11:33 PM

Dan
05-08-2015, 11:39 PM
Yeah I have a 160 thermostat. I do need to have the fans tuned to come on earlier.
I'm at 108k miles.

Your TA is nice too man.

popo8
05-08-2015, 11:58 PM
800 bucks for it. TubbyFormy found it for me... he and LT1convert delivered it from nj to pa. Its a work in progress.

And yes... for the 160 thermostate to make a difference the fams should be tuned to a lower temp...

Dan
05-18-2015, 01:26 AM
Can't sleep, thought I'd post that here. My brake pedal is hard as nails now. Like, the car brakes like a dream.
Fixed this
32968
32969
Hurt my left shoulder because the knob was stuck. Its fixed now.
32970

Now, I'm PROBABLY, more than likely getting a magna flow muffler from a member here. I need to get some damn tips. I CANNOT decide. I'm thinking corsa clones, but can't decide on size. I'm also thinking single tips. I went through the Ass shots thread many times, saved a ton of photos and still can't decide!!
is 4" OD too big for single tips? Is 3.5" the right size for it? I really like the single tip Borla unit tips.. they are 4 in rolled tips. Need help with that.... The magnaflow is gonna be a 2.5" inlet too I believe
Alsooooooo I'm back on the fence about just having a ypipe made to replace the cats. They are banging and rattling and its getting more and more annoying.

OK so, I'm going to be getting a tune when I get my LTs. A couple questions!

To minimize my downtime, will any 97 LT1 PCM work with my car? Or is it like a Vin specific thing. i have no problem waiting a few days for the PCM, its just I drive the car to school 4/7 times a week, and my beater is temporarily out of commission.

Also, are LT1 headers that bad to install? They are XS power LTs...
As always, thanks!

dawdaw
05-27-2015, 06:46 PM
Yes any 96 97 computer will work. ..

No headers are easy. Can have mine in and out in about 20 minutes

Dan
05-27-2015, 07:06 PM
Thank you my fellow Michigan person!

I have like some mini ramps, and a set of larger ramps I can put the car on. I'll try it first with the lower ones, and move to the big boys if they don't work.

Now i just gotta find a PCM for cheap :(

dawdaw
05-28-2015, 08:34 AM
No problem. .. do a search here or a wtb thread for a computer. .. more then likely you'll find one .. if not junk yards usually got a few F bodies laying around.

Where abouts are you in Michigan

Dan
05-28-2015, 08:46 AM
I'm in Troy during the school year since I go to OU. Summer time I'm in fort Gratiot which is just north of Port Huron..
Taking summer classes this year so I'm stuck in troy.

I'm sure I'll be able to find a PCM.

Dan
05-29-2015, 11:18 PM
New tires are in. 275s on all four corners.

Before
33117

After
33115
33116

Now all that's left to fix is my parking brake, which will be probably be tomorrow. Looks like just the front cable is broke. Gonna get it on my ramps and take a look.

Still undecided on my headers.. Yeah I wanna do em, but I need to enjoy the car.
So, parking brake and I'm done. My exhaust has been fixed.. the muffler was just smacking the underpart of the cover for the gas tank.

So if someone could please remove project from the title, that'd be splendid! I'll just be updating this with just maintenance stuff from now on. Knock on wood..!

Dan
06-02-2015, 08:41 AM
Went to a local meet and greet. car made it in one piece. I have an exhaust leak on passenger side too. But I met some more people.
Doing vats bypass and parking break soon. Waiting on both in mail.
I'm digging my tires.. haven't spun em cause they cost too much lol. Big difference from my 315 Nitto 555r.

Installed LS1 wiper arms too

Got too much time on my hands :D

Dan

I'm about to order all my parts. Just waiting for a few things to pass over.
Couple questions:
How do you put the EGR block off plates on? Its on the back of the intake manifold IIRC. Is there enough room from the bottom when the headers are out or do you do it from the top? And what size bolts do i need for it, or can i just reuse the hardware from the EGR stuff?

I plan on starting the install soon, and I'll be sure to start a thread on them. My BBK shorty is cracked so, I'm trying to convince my gramps to support me with this. I've never put a car on jack stands! :|

Dan

How do you get the EGR block off plates on? Doesn't look like there is much room

Dan

Ordered my gaskets, plugs, and bolts! Should be installing next week or the week after! Still have to get a 12 inch O2 extension, and my second PCM tuned which should be coming in a few days. I'm ready to pollute the earth!

The rear of my car is fucked up. I was on the highway today, doing about 70 and I could just feel the back end swinging back and forth. This has started ever since I got the new tires put on. Going to go back to tire shop, maybe I just have a bad tire, which I cannot see being possible.

Any ideas?

popo8
06-13-2015, 07:37 PM
What do u mean "swinging?" Any video that demonstrates this?

Is it possible ur just not used to a wider tire. The wider the tire the more apt they are to track with imperfections on the roadway.

LTXtech.com is my Drug...

Dan
06-13-2015, 08:16 PM
I had 315s in the back before. I'm at 275s now. It feels like the back end is moving from side to side. I can really get a video of it, because it only happens at 60+ mph.
I'm gonna do some digging on it monday after school. Check the bushings and snap some pics of underneath. It could possibly be I'm just not use to the tire size. Just doesn't feel right. But like I said, I'll do some digging Monday.
Thanks man.

I sold my stock rims for $285... I'm happy to free up room in the garage now.

popo8
06-14-2015, 05:34 AM
Hmmm... idk. I would think it should have gotten better.

What kind of tires did u get on the rear?

Also... go over ur lugs and tire pressure immediately.

LTXtech.com is my Drug...

Dan
06-14-2015, 05:50 AM
I got 275/40r17 BF Goodrich G-Force comp 2 A/S tires on all four corners. I previously had Nitto 555r 315s on the back and 245s up front. I'm going to check the lugs later today when I wake up again. Been up all night studying for math test tomorrow :)

I also did some research. Common cause of this issue is panhard bar bushes. My car has 108k miles, it's probably time for that to be replaced. But I will for sure check the lugs. Wont be driving the car, since I'm going to be getting ready to tear it apart soon.

Just to clarify, I noticed the rear stability issue this past Friday when I got on the highway. I was on highways previously, but didn't notice it. I think I recall it gradually getting worse over the past two weeks. I'm really leaning on the panhard bar because of the shape it is in. But sleep first, eventually, then lug nuts. And finally go from there..

The rear of my car is fucked up. I was on the highway today, doing about 70 and I could just feel the back end swinging back and forth. This has started ever since I got the new tires put on. Going to go back to tire shop, maybe I just have a bad tire, which I cannot see being possible.

Any ideas?

Does the car have an adjustable phb? Jam nuts come loose?

Dan

Car has stock phb.
Has AGX shocks with maybe 10k miles. They are in good shape.

Went and got some pics. Couldn't really get one "good" one, so I took multiples. Can't feel any slack in the bushings. They look like they were replaced when the shocks were done. PHB doesn't look healthy right..?

I can't drive the car. Its to the point where it is too unstable and just not safe on the highway. So these parts are well worth the $200

I hope so too.. I seem to remember faintly that I was having problems when I got the car.. I had some nasty wheel hop, but it rarely would happen.
I think my car is just possessed..

SSlowBoat

Torque arm is usually wheel hop culprit. Stock Panhard and an all season tire with a softer sidewall will feel squishy, did u get founders performance stuff? I actually liked theirs

Dan

I bought
http://www.foundersperformance.com/1982-2002-gm-f-body-on-car-adjustable-panhard-bar-with-poly-bushings/
and
http://www.foundersperformance.com/1982-2002-chevrolet-camaro-firebird-lower-control-arms-3-piece-poly-joint/
I haven't noticed any real wheel hop issues lately however though.

What is involved in installing these? Anybody have experience with these pieces?

I'll post up pics when the phb is on

Finally got the old PHB out at 9:30 pm. I had to grind out the old bolt because the jackass owner before me thought it would be a great idea to thread a metric nut on a standard threaded bolt. Jesus.. Christ... I'll upload a pic of the ol' phb when I find out where i put my phone.

Does anybody know the size of the PHB bolt and nut? I need a new one.

Bolted it in, in about 15 minutes.

Monday I'm going to start tearing the car apart for the headers. I need to redo my OTVC brackets and wire routing so it looks better. As well as get my LS steering shaft set up to be welded. I'm shooting to have the old headers and cats out Monday, and new stuff installed Tuesday. Then install the LCAs and fix my exhaust pipes in back. Rattling so damn much..
Those are my goals. I already know I'll hit some snags lol. Just gotta keep positive. Happy thoughts!

I'm ordering the relocation brackets in the morning :D

My car no longer shakes on the highway. It feels about 100 times more stable.

I'm also pleased with how my car looks underneath. The floor pan is rock solid, there is hardly any rust. The only rust is on the rear end and axles, and it is just surface. The car came from Florida! [emoji14]

I think I'll just put my install of the headers in this thread.

Dan
07-06-2015, 04:38 PM
So I have started the removal process with the headers. The driver side is getting stuck on the part of the steering shaft that comes out of the firewall. Bolts really were not that tight so.. I'm going to try and drip it out tomorrow when I do the passenger side.

I'm running a glowshift vacuum/boost gauge. It's ok but if I was running na I would go with a mechanical vacuum gauge. Arod6692 runs the afr and fuel pressure gauges and has had a lot of problems with the FP one. I believe they have replaced it twice. So far no issues with the afr gauge that I know of

Dan
07-07-2015, 08:44 PM
Thanks for all your input everybody. Much appreciated. I'm not going to order any gauges anytime soon, just needed to know everybody's opinion on them before I did. I'm only a college student after all. I am going to get a fuel pressure, AFR, and vacuum gauge.

But anyways, it rained today so I didn't make any progress on the header installation. I've been sleeping half the day too so I didn't reclock my LS Steering shaft :(

07-07-2015, 10:39 PM
The fp gauge only reads right when you first start the car and it's not warm the hotter the car gets the less accurate the gauge is. And I honestly couldn't say my afr is any better thay damn thing reads all over. I would honestly take my money back and get differnt gauges if I could.

Dan
07-08-2015, 12:53 AM

What a pain in the ass this exhaust has been. The shop I took it to did a really SHITTY job. I got the driver side out with ease. The passenger side.. well not so much. I'm still working on it. I'm going to run an open y pipe and take it to a exhaust shop because the rear hanger is bent. I had the cross member that holds the exhaust up and when I disconnected the passenger side at the header it fell down and the cat was about 3 inches from hitting my head.. I think I'm going to need another O2 extension too.. The sensors seem to be short.. I dunno. I'll find out Friday.

Edit: You can see the O2 sensor. Does that look short or no?

Dan
07-09-2015, 08:26 PM

Lol you should've seen my shirt. It was beige at first. Nowhere near the same color. Its in the trash now.

I still have to put the plugs in and put everything back on. I haven't put my Y pipe in because I have to put my new parking brake cable in.

I'll have it together Wednesday. Supposed to rain today and tomorrow. And I need to renew my plates. My birthday is Sunday :D

Now plug access is amazing. No problems with any plug at all. So I'm pleased. Vid incoming tomorrow

WELL I started it boys and girls. It only lasted about a second though. I figured eh, and installed the Y pipe which was a pain in the ass. It lasted maybe 10 seconds with the y pipe on. I'll go over everything again tomorrow but I'm lost. O2 sensors were replaced last year, and I've put maybe 3000-4000 miles on it since. I'm pretty sure I capped off everything.

I guess maybe this is it.. Should I have used like RTV on the EGR blockoff plates? I didn't and just used the gasket that was already on there.. I didn't really know what to do in that situation.

Weird thing happened today. I was cruising around. When I'm on my way home, I hit it. The check gauge light came on for a 1/4 of a second then went out. Now when I Rev it, it flickers on and off rapidly.

So, my car either is haunted or it is haunted. God damn it opti gods.

Dan

Lol the battery cable on the back of my old alternator was barely attached. I still swapped in the new alternator. Battery read around 14.2 Volts.

I also found what I believe is part of a mouse nest on/in my AC condenser. I'm thinking that it is probably shot now.. I'll remove the AC before I spend money on it. I've rarely used it when it did have a charge. But I'll eventually charge it first and check for leaks.

Would the radiator get more air if the condenser is removed? I would assume so.

In other news, the car sounds so damn sick. I went to visit my cousin who used to have a 383 LT1. He said it sounded amazing when I drove by. Fell asleep then woke back up. God damn. Might as well update this...

I got my water pump drive seal piece of shit today. I'm pissed off because I've had the pump off three times already and I never replaced it. Now this is the fourth time and its finally getting replaced.

I have been so unproductive with the car too lately. I put my PHB in last month, still haven't even touched my LCAs yet. I haven't even washed the car in 2 weeks. It's something about being up here on the water that makes me so lazy. VATS resistor bypass still hasn't been completed yet either. Easy job, I'm just not motivated to do it. It sucks. Disappointed..

But anyways, all that shit will go on. LCAs, LCA relos, wp seal shit, VATS resistor, parking brake... All of it when I head home in a few days. I'm also putting the stock 16s on so I can overhaul my z06 rims. They are loaded with brake dust. Need it done before school.

Winter mods will be: Cut the springs! I've decided to lower it even though I may regret it. I was going to just get some stranos but I've been talked into cutting them now. I have KYB AGX shocks on it now with about 15k miles.

I am planning on doing the resistor mod in a couple days. I got lazy and just bought the unit because I am lazy. I am no longer going with an electric water pump.. just doesn't suit my needs yaknow? No leaks at the back of the intake(i think). I am 99% sure it is this seal since the oil is at the front of the engine. It likes to collect on the front sway bar.

I really hate to do this seal. I haven't had any cooling problems for the past couple months, and I hate to open it up again. But I'd rather overheat than starve the engine of oil. So off it will come. Doing my LCAs tomorrow I think.

ScreaminRedZ
08-23-2015, 09:40 AM
Is it leaking from the from crank seal? One of my LT1's was leaking from there because there was a groove worn in the shaft of the hub that the crank pulley bolts to. I don't remember what they are called, but there is a thin metal sleeve that you can buy to fix it. You press it onto the shaft and then break off the part that was used to press it on, and it leaves you with a smooth surface on the shaft for the seal.

The corners of the timing cover are problem areas too, but you could check the shaft for a groove first without removing the cover.

Dan
08-23-2015, 11:21 AM
I believe the timing cover seal was replaced when the rear main seal was done. The leak started this spring after I had the pump off. I'm fairly certain its the water pump drive seal.

If not well shit lol

ScreaminRedZ
08-23-2015, 12:17 PM
If the crank hub shaft or water pump drive shaft are grooved, new seals won't fix the leak. Plenty of other things that it could be, but if you have it apart anyway, take a look at the shafts before you reassemble.

I bought this car March 21, 2014. I would only see no lights on the dash when I would clear codes. Then the keylock cylinder got damaged in July 2014. From July of 2014 until today August 26, 2015, I dealt with the damn security light being on. I bypassed VATS today finally. No more security light. Now I just need to get the codes tuned out and no more lights on the dash.

Yes, I am overwhelmingly happy over something this stupid.

I'm eventually going to replace the keylock cylinder.

well uuuuuuuuuuuuuh. You know how when that seal goes bad, it leaks oil right? Well the oil level is fine...? I haven't noticed any real spots in the past month. I changed the oil after I installed my headers which was.. middle July. In a month, it hasn't dropped at all. I'm still going to replace the seal, just over the winter now unless it does start leaking.

I'm telling you all, this car is weird.

So, the reason I stated the above is because I don't hear the pump prime at all. Did some research, and it could be just the relay. So I'm going to try and find one... 12193601 is the part number.

Lol I think someone is extremely jealoys!!

I think that it is probably just the relay. No problems starting the car. It fires right up with no problem, drives great too. It stopped making priming noises a couple months ago I think. I probably should do a fuel filter and replace the relay.

Oh and I almost named this thread: Money pit for a college kid. It does need a new title name. Well if you saw my video in bacon bites, you'd know I was only a little crazy.. maybe Crazy's Camaro!!

Another thing if you do your rear main seal get some sealer for gaskets and put it around the edge of the seal that's what I've done on all 3 of the Camaros we have just for a little extra security and on the back of the manifold also when I worked for a Honda dealership I used HondaBond and it works really good.

Oh ya I know what your saying. During my cooling mishap, I would replace one piece just to have another one go bad. I ended up replacing 95% of my cooling system. Did some cheap fixes and finally just did it right. Then again, a shop did fuq my car up. Been a year and I'm still mad at the place. Thankfully the car is running smooth-ish. I like working on this car surprisingly. Although somethings drive me insane. I never want to touch the cooling system again. I've become an expert at it ;)

Dan
09-03-2015, 04:26 PM
Eh I got a weird ass problem right now. It's really hard to describe so I'm going to try my hardest. Might get confusing lol sorry

Car has been a little weird lately. It is like hiccuping, but with no loss of power
And only at a certain point and in first and second gear it looks like. It isn't the opti, this isn't a spark thing. I also don't believe it is fuel related. I honestly think I'm either a) a getting a weird wheel hop, b) rear end fluid low causing it to be weird, c) the throttle cable is sticking, or d) something else.

It started Tuesday. I then filled it up with gas. It was down 8 gallons. Didn't affect anything.

Here's where it will get weirder. It only happens in the 1-1.6k rpms and in 1st and 2nd gear, rarely 3rd. It doesn't do it when I slam on it though. It does it when going slow, like raising the rpms stupid slow in order to save gas. It doesn't happen in 4,5,6. Is wheel hop even possible when already moving?

I'm going to change the rear fluid this weekend if the weather permits and put the LCAs on and see if that helps.

Dan
09-04-2015, 07:50 AM
Does it in all gears in the 1.5k rpm range. Seems to get better once the car is warmed up, but still occurs.

Dan
09-04-2015, 08:32 AM
Update i guess. On my way home.from class, it did it maybe 5 times in a 15 minute spirited drive. It does it only in gear. Didn't do it free revving, so that rules out the Opti..

Id hate to say this but it doesn't rule out the opti but it doesn't sound like your opti is going bad mine just went out last week but it was fine free revving but when I would drive it it would die and throw the low resolution code which points to the opti I even tried a different icm just to make sure but I would try the easier and less expensive stuff first like the fuel filter you may also want to try a different coil just as a precaution I still need to change mine

Dan

No opti codes are being thrown. It was also replaced in 07 by a dealer. It doesn't feel like the car is losing power. I crawled under it and took a look at the LCAs for shits and giggles. The bushings don't look 100%...

I pray and sacrifice a LS1 to the opti gods nightly, so I can't see them screwing me. Then again....

. I had intentions on doing a LE2 heads and cam swap this winter. After some pricing and thinking, I changed my mind. I'm going to hold off until next year so I can do it properly. Depending on funds, my goal is to get the engine rebuilt, heads, cam, intake, throttle body, clutch, suspension. Maybe I'll get a rear end too.

But for this winter, I'm going to get some new seats and remove the rear seats.

I'm going to be converting to OBD1. I have a question about this now. There are differences in the cam between a 95 and 97. The 95 has a slight bit more of lift I think. Would it be a bad idea to use a 95 base tune on my 97? The internals are all stock. I'm not sure what else is different from the two. Any chime will be heard!

popo8
09-15-2015, 06:03 PM
Dont forget to do the resister mod to the knock sensor or find an lt4 knock module for the computer.

As for the other questions... idk. My car is far from stock so when converting to obd 1.

My question is why do u want to convert to obd1 for a stockish car? If its about tuning software, there is software for obd 2.

LTXtech.com IS my drug...

Dan
09-15-2015, 06:22 PM
Software and datalogging for obd2 is about $900 vs about 90 for obd1 lol. My car will be getting a heads and cam package in the future as well. I will be tuning it myself after a base tune when that time comes. There really isn't many people who touch the archaic lt1 up here that is talented unless it is 24x. There are a couple lt1 tuners but they are trash.

I will be replacing the knock sensor with a obd1 one.

There really is no tuning to be done. It's just a bolt on car. I'd just like to have the ability to play with it ya know. I just can't justify the cost of OBD2 tuning and datalogging. In the end it just is too expensive for me. I should be able to get a obd1 computer for relatively cheap, software etc etc.

This is more geared toward the near future, not next week or the weekend after. More like a spring thing :D

I greatly appreciate your offer on the tuning laptop too :)

Ordering a MGW shifter in October.

I was going hard on it today and I saw the tach hit what I thought was 6k. It didn't feel like I hit any kind of limiter. I think it's just my tach is off slightly. I was logging it once and I swear I hit over 5600 and it only said 5100. The tach needle is around 950-1000 rpms and warm and logs say 750/850. Wonder if the needle is just slightly bent.

Oh well don't care. I'm gonna have me a MGW shifter soon!
