The pan gasket was replaced at 100kish by a shop. The timing chain wasn't touched.
I'll just replace it.

I fixed the hub bolt holes too.

Work at your pace, rush and you'll risk skipping stuff. The tracks will be open for a long time, keep it up man!!! After messing with mine all last year i started to lose interest in it. felt like it was all working on it and no having fun. I didn't really do much with mine this winter just cuz i wanted it to be ready to rock. Just keep that first turn of the key in mind and how satisfying it'll be once it's together!

Alright, I have a question.
How clean should the block be before putting the new head gaskets on? Anything I should use?
Also incase any tiny bits of old gasket material fell into the cylinder, can I spray some oil in each cylinder and turn the motor over to try and get that leftover junk into the pan?

Thanks guys. I'm going to be installing the cam Sunday. My friends have a YouTube channel with car stuff and they might be coming by to film this shit with some of my other friends too.

shownomercy

Clean as you can get it. Alcohol, and paper towels till that bitch shines. I would be wary of using anything but a straight razor to clean crap off.

Just use a shop vac to get the big chunks out of cylinders then use a paper towel soaked in some oil to wipe clean.

Dan
05-13-2016, 12:12 PM
Ok. Thanks snm you're the man. I was just worried about the stuff in between the piston and cylinder wall. You can see some kind of crap but I'll try vacuuming it out.

Use the straight razor backwards so the edge is not going into the metal... thatl clean ur surfaces up nice. Then some laquer thinner or good cleaner (alcohol, brake kleen... etc).

Solvents alone usually don't get the job done. I lightly use straight razors and lots of them. They get dull and nicked pretty easily so I'm constantly switching. Keep the blade away from holes in the deck as much as you can bc the corrosion and buildup will damage it.

Do while it's all apart I'm changing motor mounts. Where do I jack the motor up at? Just use a block of wood underneath the pan and jack?

Catmaigne
05-14-2016, 10:55 AM
I wouldn't, it's flimsy steel. If you have a hoist then you can bolt a chain to the front of the block and lift from there. When I didn't have a hoist I had bottle jacks under the accessory bracket and the front corner of the block. Dunno if that was right but I didn't die so it was ok.

Block of wood under crank snout and go slow. Its only a crank, what could go wrong?

Personally I would just wait till you can use a hoist to pull front of motor up.

I used wood under the pan and it didn't dent or anything, try and use something wide to spread the load. We had a piece of a 6x8 beam that worked perfect.

Thanks Formula218

After talking with a fellow lt1 guy from Michigan, I'm likely buying a keyed ati hub and using a longer key after his crank reluctor walked off. Whether that be for this season or next I'm not sure yet. He had a ati hub w/ no extended key.

Still need to rotate the motor to get some more crud out from between the piston and cylinder wall.

Everyone has to remember... if ur not doing a street/driving or dyno tune... u cant be upset if its not 100% or sometimes even close. Each car is different and mail ordering a tune is an educated guess based on the assumption that all of the information about the vehicle is dead on... that all of the vehicles mechanical aspects are working 100% and so on...

I'm not saying I'm upset it wasn't the best tune, it never worked because that pcm was bricked. Not Moe's fault but mine for not just sending mine out.
I've bought two PCMs here and I'll never do it again.

Formula218

The tuning aspect was the single biggest reason I went LS. So much easier to just order HPTuner and be able to do stuff yourself. Me and 3 friends with LS stuff went it and bought it so it was cheap, and now I can just have my buddy tweak my tune whenever I do something new. Might be worth looking into if you can use HPT for the 24x stuff.

What are you on about? When I looked into getting HPT for my 24x swap it was $500 for the interface and credits. Even if you bought the interface used for a few hundred, you still have to spend $100 for each PCM you unlock and bricking one leaves you SOL. Tuning an LT1 only takes a $60-80 cable, my crappy laptop, and some freeware.

This platform is dying but still cheaper for builds 425whp and under.

I just had to buy credits, I already have access to the interface. I don't know about that 'cheaper 425whp and under', I should be close to that HP number hopefully, and will have no place near what this build costs into mine. Obviously Dan could have done it cheaper than he did if that was his goal, but the prices you guys pay for stuff blows my mind when i know what i'll have into mine to be comparable.

At some point you pay for the HPT suite, which is not cheap, and then you pay per OS unlock. Used to cost more for a 3bar OS too, assholes at HPT.

In the end, we do what we can, with what we got. There is always someone faster, who did it for less and gets more wins.

Loom at shbox.com for a torque fastener matrix. Has torque value for every bolt. And no, it's actually tighter than that

Doing the harness tomorrow, shouldn't take me long. Still don't know how I'm mounting coils. Original plan won't work.

But, I have never run the silly factory brace for the alternator and no issues. Two bolts through case and good to go.

Could you mount them inside the wiper cowl or just under it where they can't be seen, then just run wires down the firewall and out to the plugs?

Is a valve cover that big required for rocker clearance?

Does the fuel pump prime?
Do you have power at coils?
Is there spark?
Do you expect to diagnose off a video of it cranking?
Any codes?

Dan
08-26-2016, 11:50 AM
Pump primes.
There is power going to the coils, however I think my wiring is bad. I have the power for the coils running to the extra 12v source for the pcm.
Only code I had was map sensor voltage low but fixed it by plugging the pin into the computer and have Evap code.
I don't expect diagnosis off a video. Just wanted to post it.

I'll try the existing wires tomorrow and see if it gets better.
What do you mean by are the coils and injectors correctly swapped. There's only one way for the coils to go on. I fouled them out being stupid and not running it long enough.
I'll run it tomorrow and see how it runs and decide if I will replace the wires.

How often does that happen with little power and street tires?
Not often I have only seen it with such little power. Drive shafts fail often and I have seen a front yoke twist off and buirre the the front of the drive shaft into the ground and lift the rear of the car off the ground and shoot the drive shaft out to the side of the car 150 ft or so. It put sever dents into the floor of the car and ruined the rear end destroyed 50 to 100 ft of asphalt.

Hes right^^^

I know safety is always a concern but I really wouldn't be too concerned with your car. You're probably only making about a 150 wheel horsepower anyways. I'd be Concerned about the Motor coughing a rod through the side of the block And getting oil on Gramps

Debating if i should bring my radials or not. I have a college shootout next weekend too at Milan

Went sideways down the highway yesterday morning on my way to school. Raining a fuck ton.
Car has a miss under load, mainly at low rpm and in 4,5,6. As soon as you mash the pedal it will hesitate for a second and then it comes back alive. I don't know if it's due to there being an error code P0332 which is bank 2 knock sensor low input.
Other than a little oil leak and a squeaky belt.
But it's still running great. Changing the oil Friday and replacing a couple wires that had dinner with the primaries and throwing a new set of plugs in while I'm at it. I've already put 600 miles on it
Afr gauge is in and rigged up until 6le ships a gauge holder that goes in the AC vents. I ordered it on the first and still haven't gotten it. Emailed him and he said there was a shipping problem.

Afr is gud. Tune is gud. Trying out a different muffler tomorrow too.

Put my black widow muffler on yesterday in between classes.
The big thing about them was "all tone no drone". The dynomax droned like fucking hell and I got tired of it really fast. This morning was the first time I drove the car with the windows up in a year. The drone is almost gone and it sounds a little better albeit mostly the same.

Yeah, money well spent on this muffler. The drone is almost gone, and it sounds good. I'm a happy customer

Fixed the tach. The pin was bent so it wasn't connecting to the computer. It's reading 650 rpm at idle though so it's off.

I take it back, tach doesn't work. It doesn't even read above 1000 until I'm at 4k+

Were the tach signals changed in the ECM to to work with the LT gauges? I seem to remember having a problem like this after my swap and it was something about how the signal is sent to the gauges being different for pre and post '98. I wonder if this has to be done in yours too since you've got a LS ECM now.

That's what I was thinking. I'm going to have a local guy fix it. Wish I could have it fixed for tomorrow but I guess not

Dan

Couldn't get the driveshaft safety loop on. I got the lower cross member portion but couldn't get the whole loop. My torque arm is in the way and it's bent too.
Lol damn my suspension is top notch

But Milan at 9 am tomorrow. Will be sure to upload slips. Not going for anything crazy. It's bracket racing

NICE! Not far off from where I was last year. Looks like you need some slightly stickier tires to get that 60ft down.

Dan

Phone died last night and I fell asleep.
Best run was a 13.6. Tires spinning on launch. I think once I replaced my torque arm and LCAs, it should help.
For a mail order base tune, getting mid 26 mpg on the highway, I can't complain.
I'll try and get more runs in under my belt. I'll have videos to post later.

I normally do, like I said I didn't want to DQ.

Mail order tune, stock rear suspension, wasn't pushing the car to full potential. I didn't want the car to end up on the gurney for the trip home. And I trapped 104 boi

Mail order tune iirc.

I understand that. This was my first visit this year and I was nervous as hell about breaking something and wanted to do good for my school. But when I go back I'll give ya'll a 12 second run ;)

I'm starting my list of winter mods as it's getting cold as hell in the mornings here and it reminds me of winter.
So far on the list is:
True duals
Ported intake
Yanking the harness and making it even more beautiful
Clutch
And might entertain a 8.8 or 9inch rear end
