I wonder what was done before front wheel drive cars were made available in the US...
Had an '85 Camaro I drove all year around when living in Denver. The secret is a good tire and a little common sense. No hazards necessary.

84 z28 first car in high school, built top end and manual valve body 3k stalled 700r4. Snow was fun with basically tractor tires I got from some ghetto used tire place and a whole ton of sand in the hatch

At least there is some weight on rear wheels, guy at work bought a 2wd pickup... that is a useless vehicle in the snow.
Boosted 4x4 slides are fun as hell though.

'69 Camaro 4-spd back in the late 70's, early 80's - it's all in how you "feel" the road using the clutch pedal and the brakes, and limited gas pedal. Found out that wet leaves are almost as bad as sheer ice. Drove my Camaro year round back then.
Today's cars are too smooth and soft. Can't really feel the bumps and changes in road surface like I could back then. Of course I had bias ply tires too. Oh yeah, and the requisite bag of sand in both corners of the trunk.
