Build Summaries:

1st Build - Machine work done by a local shop, engine assembled personally. The car was built in my garage with the help of great friends and fellow F-body enthusiasts. Car put down 710rwhp on a dynojet with 15lbs of boost and the twin 3.5" Procharger intercoolers. After adding a FMIC, more boost with a pulley change (~19-20psi), I didn't see any additional peak power on the dyno but I did see a big increase in the mid range. Best time in the car was 10.7 @ 137. Unfortunately, this engine always ate oil...a lot of it. We are talking about a quart every 100-125 miles. I drove it like this for 3 years and through multiple track outings. The engine never missed a beat but the oil consumption bothered the crap out of me. I literally had range anxiety if I drove anywhere without checking the oil multiple times.

I finally decided I was tired of the oil issue so after the last track rental, I did a leak down test with a friend and it looked like the rings were toast. These rings were a Total Seal Gapless Top set. Thinking I must have missed something during my amateur engine build, I called up Karl Ellwein at Ellwein Engines to discuss the issue and my goals. This is where move onto the second build.

2nd Build - http://www.ellweinengines.com/ERE48/ERE48.htm - I convinced my crazy set of friends to help remove the engine so it could be driven down to Ellwein Engines. This is normally a 9 hr round trip with no traffic however the weather decided to get ugly resulting in a 13 hour trek. While we were at Karl's, we tore into the engine and to our surprise, the cylinder head intake ports were spotless. It seemed the heads could be ruled out here. The bores showed signs of potential fuel wash which would be odd as I watch my a/f gauge like a hawk and never saw any gross over-fueling situations. The bottom end looked excellent and my assembly worked looked to be spot on. After a trip to the machine shop for reconditioning, it was noticed that the bored were ovaled and were not 30 over but actually 27. At that point, I had a frank conversation with the original machine shop. Knowing this was something I built in my garage and with no real way to prove a mistake was made, I wasn't in it for any reimbursement. This was more letting someone know a mistake was made and that I wasn't happy. I didn't want to bleed drama into this rebuild so I did not pursue the issue further. The learning experience here is to check everyone's work, no matter how good they are supposed to be. Everyone can have a bad day.

Karl was excellent with communication and routinely updated the build page when asked. He is a through and through a LTx enthusiast. I have been reading his build pages for years so it was nice to see mine on the site and in good hands. The heads were gone through by one of the shops he uses to make sure they were in good order. The block was remachined to spec, rings/gaskets/seals, etc were replaced appropriately. While the engine was apart, I made a small cam change to a slightly more aggressive design to take advantage of the higher boost. The engine went together and back in the car.

The first start went very well with zero smoke from the tailpipe. Woohoo!! I got it on the road ASAP to start breaking in the engine. I did everything by the book and loading it up well while giving it some boost. The engine felt really strong and better than before. I noticed on the first trip that it puffed blue after sitting at a stop light for 10-15 secs. I was hoping this was something that would clear up but I was wrong. The smoking continued and it was burning oil again. I spoke with Karl, Total Seal and everyone under the sun to figure out why this was happening again. I was advised by all parties to keep driving it and perhaps the rings just didn't seat yet.

After a bunch of phone calls, emails and even an attempted dyno tune, I decided to park the car. This is one of those situations where something is wrong but everything was followed by the book. It was a very defeating feeling knowing how much energy, money, favors, time, and general effort was put into this to have it result in the same situation.

The car did lay down a respectable 654rwhp on a Mustang dyno in this condition blowing smoke the entire way. I will say throughout this issue, Karl has been a stand up guy and has made a number of personal sacrifices to see this build come alive again. The same can be said for my close friends which brings us to the current rebuild.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRl65x55jxA

3rd Build - http://www.ellweinengines.com/ERE48/ERE48ReDo.htm - After feeling sorry for myself for a bit, I finally decided to get this fixed. Again, my friends and family somehow appeased my wishes and a plan was made. The engine was pulled and brought back down to Karl's. We pulled it apart and in general, all looked well. The bottom end looked great and the heads looked fine too. The bores had a shiny look to them so that was the only questionable area. The block went back to the machine shop and heads went to a different shop for a closer look. Upon inspection, it appears the new valve seals installed on rebuild #2 came loose from the boss and were literally pumping oil into the cylinders. Bummer.....

Since we found the smoking gun, I was confident to continue with the rebuild but since we were there, why not upgrade some parts right? My crank looked great still so that was retained but we decided to up the compression a touch and switched rods/pistons. The JEs looked great and served me well but this time, we went with a set of custom Diamonds with all the options. The top end received new, stronger valve springs from Manley. These would get me the spring pressure needed to keep my power from tapering off up top after 5500rpm. My friends guilted me into replacing my LS7 lifters for a set of Crower link-bars. Even though they had served me well, it wasn't a bad choice to switch them out. We also decided to switch to a conventional ring set. Karl has more proven data from the conventional ring set users than the gapless crowd so we decided to go with them.

The next decision was to have the engine dyno'd and broken in prior to it going back in the car. Not that I didn't trust Karl's work but after the issues experienced thus far, this would be money well spent. Karl found a nice dyno shop 30 min from him to use. We scheduled to be present during the dyno session and then if all went well, take the engine home. The shop was very clean and well maintained but lacked the setup to do the full EFI treatment. No problem! Karl had a LTx carb intake and 750cfm carb to toss on the engine to run it NA. With a static compression of 9.5:1, she put down 514hp and 506tq at the crank. There was no tuning done except for a basic timing check and break in. Could it have put down more? Maybe but that wasn't the intent of the day. I was very pleased with the numbers and the engine sounded great. The best part was there was no oil consumption! We did spring a leak on the crank hub seal but no biggie. We swapped the intake back to mine at Karl's shop, did a quick bottom end inspection and I was on my way.

During the time between the big install, I had the clutch rebuilt and input shaft replaced on the trans to keep things fresh. Additionally, I was tasked with dressing the motor but first, I had to replace the bum crank hub seal in the timing cover. In theory, this shouldn't have been a big deal but I have a special gift and ended up putting my face into the throttle body, effectively giving me a nice gash on my cheek. I was pressing the crank hub on the crank snout with a homemade tool. It was a stubborn bastard and one of the wrenches slipped while I was going at it full force. After the bleeding stopped, the hub was fully pressed on and we were ready to continue.

A little while later, I finished up dressing the motor. My dad spent hours hand polishing the visible parts of the accessory bracket. He played it off like it wasn't a big deal but I know how long this process takes. It came out great!

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w170/bmdeluca/The%20Bird/The%20Rebuild/0118151321_zpskrogd6zc.jpg (http://s176.photobucket.com/user/bmdeluca/media/The%20Bird/The%20Rebuild/0118151321_zpskrogd6zc.jpg.html)

While giving the bracket one last hit on the bench polisher, I decided to injure myself again. I was careless and didn't have the polisher bolted down very well. When the buffer hit an edge on the bracket, it sprung free and landed on my forearm. Suffice to say, its still healing....same goes for what little pride I had left.

I figured I would have less chance hurting myself by gapping plugs while watching TV. This was uneventful. I went with NGK BR7EF plugs gapped at 0.28. These are a non-projected, 2 step colder plug.

This past Friday, I took PTO from work, loaded the Yukon and had the car towed to my friends shop. I arrived while the sun was shining so I gave her a quick bath and we put the bird inside the shop. My friend and I slapped on some Road Wrap product to give the paint a little extra protection (not shown in pic below).

Before getting the engine prepared for install onto the k-member, we installed the new plugs, headers with new gaskets & ARP bolts, coil packs, new pilot bearing, SFI bell housing w/motor plate, McLeod twin disk, etc.

Things went quiet for a few hours as we wrestled the k-member and engine into the car. With my car, its always 10lbs of **** into a 5lb bag. Everything eventually went in. I had a moment where I thought something was wrong with the clutch fork/pull-out bearing but thankfully I was just dreaming.

We were approaching 5PM (started at 8:30AM) and we had a few options. Stop here with much of the major items done, or rally and push towards a potential first start. We decided to keep going....

We got literally everything in and connected. I turned the key for power and everything lit up. Unfortunately, Shownomercy and my other friend caught a fuel leak where the regulator goes into the back of the rail. They tried to give it a quick kiss with a wrench but the issue didn't go away. We assume it is a bum o-ring but rather than pull off the rails and attempt a quick fix, this is something better addressed with a clear head. It was now 8:30PM so we called it a night. I have a nice set of rails with AN fitting from Ryan Stout (great seller btw) but I didn't want to install them just yet. I want to get the original setup working before changing more parts. I ordered a new o-ring set and parts for the current regulator so I can keep this going.

Since it was cold, dark and getting late, I decided to get the car towed the next day (Sunday - Today). We got some breakfast, strolled over to the shop and called to have it towed home. The car is now back in the garage and I will tinker with the fuel leak issue likely next weekend or sometime this week.

Overall, I can't believe how much got done in the weekend. I can't wait to get this thing fired to hear that whistle.

Awesome build, I remember the very first time I was getting into the car scene and I was at my buddy Kyles house and he's like you gotta check out this guy's build with your start up video, and it was your car... time Flys that had to be like 3 or 4 years ago or more.. you think you can drag it down this year to Kentucky

Thanks man. Time does fly for sure. I get a bit of nostalgia looking at the original build pics.

If things go well, I may get this thing down to Kentucky to embarrass myself. I plan to be in attendance with Shownomercy but if the car is well sorted by then, I may load it up and make the trip.

It wasn't looking good for a while but I'm definitely motivated again. Hopefully it stays that way. Time to get yours back together too.

Thanks and yes, the frustration does bleed through in the posts. Thankfully good people stepped in to help get it right. I will surely keep the thread updated and I'm looking to crank this thing over in the next couple weeks barring anything crazy happening.

We need more boosted LTx guys back together and running so get your ass moving! :) I still have no idea what it will put down but if it's the same numbers with no oil, that would be fine. Gears are 3.73s which were spec'd back in the h/c/n2o stock bottom end days. With a 27" tire, I think I'm good until 140ish. If I end up at redline before the stripe, I will be smiling as I purchase a lower gear set or cry trying to fit 28s in the wheel wells.

Negative ghost rider, with 27s, 3.73s, and a 6500rpm shift you can only got 140.

Edited for 27s, who the fuck runs 27s anyway?!

Sooo my estimate was correct. You know why I run 27s to avoid the cutting and bfh. Actually, we should slap your setup on my car and see how good or bad it fits.

I'm trying! Shit keeps getting in the way of progress. LOL Like building a house that keeps getting pushed back in terms of completion. Was looking at Apr now it's June evenly possibly 1 July. Grrrr.....but it'll be worth it in the end w/ a 30X50 workshop, 2 post lift and motorcycle lift. So much to do so little time. I'm guessing you'll be putting down 750+rwhp with that beast. Definitely down for a LTx Boost meet!

Well you do need a good home for the cars so sounds like a reasonable excuse ;).

Aeromotive has a signature required for a $30 package so UPS left a tag. Annoying but I wouldn't have time to work on it before the weekend anyway. Should arrive tomorrow.

Thanks for the kudos and I'm sure you will enjoy those parts.

So so this happened today....

Removed the rails from the car and took apart the regulator. I replaced the diaphram, all the o-rings and bolted everything back up. No leaks. The diaphram didn't look bad at all but there were a couple barely finger tight fasteners so I think that was the issue.

I only let the car run for a few minutes since I will eventually need to bleed the cooling system and the tuner needs to tweak my idle AFR. Everything out of the exhaust was water vapor from condensation. Not a bit of oil. Sooooo damn excited.

Thanks guys. Very exciting day. I need to get with the tuner to see if he can send me a HPTuners file to trim the fuel a bit. I have a few things to tidy up under the hood but now that I know it runs, I can get that done.

I need to decide if I want to run this fancy catchcan setup I have or if I just want to get a puke tank and rock the dual breathers.

Here are a few shots the engine bay and another idle video (sound is better in this one with the GoPro). Still have to clean things up but it will always be "busy".

Edit - As for the shootout, I am planning on going however whether I participate or not will depend on where the car is at that time. Otherwise, I will likely be pit crew to watch Shownomercy smack up some folks.

Same. I'm hoping to hit the dyno day too. I have to double check the date since it's escaping me now.

The plan was black and polished/brushed accents. Everything in the bay is black sans the accessory bracket, charge pipe, fuel rails, throttle body and pcm cover.

I had the canton mail boxes on the engine before which gave it a bit more "bling". While they looked cool, they were huge and annoying to work around. I had to angle the two rear passenger coils to avoid them hitting the heater box.

The lt4 valve covers are awesome in my opinion. The studs are a great design feature and they fit really well. I have a MBA dress up kit sitting in the box but the coil pack brackets would cover most of the pieces.

I'm glad this helps motivate your build. At some point, you need to get it done and functional to enjoy it otherwise there are always reasons to wait and tinker more. This isn't to say that I recommend tossing something together that will not work but I think you know what I mean. I've sat there and said well maybe I should get bigger heads, custom this, custom that, etc but I'd rather have a good working car first. Then I can always do upgrades here and there if I somehow get bored. It will never be perfect but it's important to set the goal and get enjoyment from it otherwise it's just a pile of parts and dreams.

Pretty good day. Replaced the o2 sensors in the headers and also the o2 for the wideband. Tuner and I agreed a fresh set of sensors wouldn't hurt considering how much oil I passed over the last set.

Got the engine up to temp and bled the coolant system. It took a while and think it needs a little more bleeding but it didn't try to overheat. Giving it a rest to check the rad fluid level and will give it another go later on. AFR looks good once warmed up So dare I say it's almost ready for the retune.

Quick update. Life has been rather hectic lately but found some time to get the car ready for her dyno tune. I took the car for a spin last weekend to put some fresh gas in it and the trip was rather uneventful lol (This is a good thing!). The car started, idled and drove really well. The clutch was smooth and the trans shifted nicely. The engine stayed cool and most notably, didn't smoke a bit. I didn't get into any real level of boost (maybe a touch past atmosphere). The new LS steering shaft made a huge improvement in steering feel. It is much tighter with zero slop. The shocks need some adjustment since the rear was a little bouncy. I got back home, puller her in the garage and got out to hear the exhaust and confirm everything was still running clean. Thankfully, everything looked great and dare I say sounds better than before. The tune needs some work but its not bad.

I have a few small items to clean up but I'd say its ready to be tuned. Next Saturday is the big day so we will see what she does.

Me too. Then we will see if that makes a difference at the track. Made 18lbs on the dyno last time with some boost being bled up top. We believe this was due to a soft amount of valve float since the tuner saw the boost fall a touch. Springs were inspected during last rebuild and found to be "tired". I could feel it from the drivers seat where power trailed off up after 5500. Either that's the issue or I'm out of air intake to the Procharger. Springs were replaced with Manley Nextek units so we should be good.

Yesterday was a busy day but I'm happy with how everything went. I took a little time and reviewed the prior dyno sheet to this one. The biggest difference is the last 1000 RPM (look at the area right before 6300). The good thing is the power is generally holding on the new build versus the old. I attribute this from the better valvetrain when everything was rebuilt. The other good thing was it was making this power hit after hit with a couple horsepower difference.

Old Dyno Sheet:

Figured it would be a good time for an update. After the car was tuned on the dyno and fun was had at the LTxTech dyno day, I took the car for its first maiden voyage. The top was down, sun shining and everything sounded great. I decided to downshift to fourth on the highway and give her a good WOT hit. AFR looked great, she pulled really hard and I had a big smile on my face. I took the next exit so I could head the other way towards home. There is a nice on ramp to get on the highway so this time I figured I would see how she feels in third. I rolled into the throttle and man did she rip. I went for a quick shift into 4th and it wasn't going into gear (grinding badly). I tried for a different gear and wasn't getting it to go in anywhere. I pulled over to the side of the road. The trans didn't want to go into any of the gears but after a few minutes, I could finally select all of the gears. I started her up and got it home but the trans was hurt.

Upshifting through the gears felt OK except for the 3-4. It now grinds every time at any speed. It will go into 4th but would again, grind every time. I thought perhaps maybe my clutch hydraulics were not allowing the clutch to disengage properly. I had a new, USA made slave on the shelf so I decided to put that in even though I was confident the clutch was disengaging properly (pedal feel was very good and engagement occurs in the upper part of the pedal travel). I took it for another ride and same issue. I also was hearing some not so fun noises here and there too so I decided to just take it back home.

Mind you this trans is a Level 3 tick unit so I was a bit surprised this issue occurred. I called them up and they really didn't have an idea what the issue could be. They were also not looking to do me any favors with a rebuild either. I get their position but it prompted me to look elsewhere. I contacted Hanlon Motorsports located in eastern PA not far from Pottstown for his input. He had a bit more to say but like anything else, it needs to come apart to determine what's wrong. I drove the trans to him and his comments were as follows.

- Input and mainshaft bearings were shot which put the brunt of the issue on the blocker rings causing them to fail.
- 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear didn't look wonderful.
- Countershaft cluster didn't look good
- Generally all of the gears in the front of the trans showed a lot of wear associated with heat.

The heat in the front of the trans was likely due to fluid running to the back of the trans during hard acceleration. So the rebuild was started and we replaced all of the questionable/bad parts with new OEM. Getting these was a big challenge as Tremec is not producing a lot of parts at the moment. Many parts are backordered, etc. Through our efforts, we were able to track down all of the parts in a rather timely fashion. Aftermarket parts are out there and available however none of the folks I spoke with are comfortable using any of them for a performance build.

To avoid the heat issue and keep the trans happy, Hanlon installed a fitting in the front of the trans to feed fluid to the front end. They sell a pump, cooler and filter setup to make this all work nicely. I will need to figure out placement, plumbing and wiring. The benefits are obviously keeping fluid on the front end of the trans but it also will avoid foaming of the fluid maintaining its protection abilities.

I got the trans back this week and it is back in the car. There are a number of items I need to button up and I will need to figure out the placement of the fluid pump setup. My plan is to engage the pump off of my Hobbs switch which controls the 2nd fuel pump. No need to run the pump when I'm just driving around normally. I will take pics of the setup.

I also bought new wheels/tires for the car 2 days before the trans had the issue. I will debut those items when all is well with the car. :)

Thanks. Bob Hanlon was good to speak with and I'm hoping this lasts a good amount of time. The next step up would be a magnum or TR6060 conversion which is really big money. My wallet needs a bit of a break. I didn't know about Bob when I had Tick do the first rebuild when the blower went in. Packing and shipping the trans to North Carolina just didn't make sense when there is someone just a couple hours away. The plan is to get this back together, enjoy the car on the street for a bit and see what she does at the track towards the end of the year.

Since the Y-pipe was pulled, I decided to give it some loving. I also gave the Kenny Brown DD subframes a coating of POR15. They had a good amount of basic surface rust so now they look nice.

I am truly blessed to have such great friends and family as I couldn't do this without them. I pulled her out of the garage for a quick teaser pic but new ones will be coming soon. I have to button up a few items and find a good way to trigger the trans pump plus raise the front end a touch.
