I need to tow mine about 20 miles to a shop for some clutch work etc, seems to be mixed reviews on whether a dolly will work. Did you do anything special?
Used a tow dolly on a 300 mile trip when I purchased my camaro. My car was an M6 so I just left it on neutral and towed it.

nope, was just careful, traveled about 25 miles, 20 of which were at 55mph. I've used a dolly for many years on all types of cars, albeit may not be the best way for some, it always worked out for me. best advice I can give is after u get it strapped down, drive about 15 feet and come to a somewhat sudden stop, then re-adjust your straps. is the dolly yours or a rental?

Also, the biggest advice I can say if you dolly it, make sure you have another steering wheel holding mechanism besides only relying on the column wheel lock. You can break the column by just using the wheel lock to hold the front wheels straight. Had it happen when triple a towed my iroc, and 4th gen columns are close to the same

This.
Its seventy bucks or so for a day, and infinitely safer/easier.

Because I was on a budget, and the dolly was free. Didn't work out though, the car was too low in the front. The clutch fork broke from my other thread, so there's no clutch what so ever. Guess if I hit every stop light I could've synced it all the way lol just had too far to go. Ended up paying for a tow anyway. Flywheel is being turned as we speak.

A dolly will work fine. If it doesn't drive under its own pwer it will be a bitch to get it onto the dolly, however. Only thing I would recommend is once it's on the dolly you should disconnect the driveshaft. You can either get a plug for the trans tail shaft or just drain the fluid. Even if the car is in neutral it can generate excessive heat and break things.

You are not supposed to lock the front wheels when using a tow dolly. There is no reason to. The back wheels will keep the car tracking straight, and with that said you are also never to back up.

Tell that to the towing company

If you are referring to a car being towed backwards with the rear wheels up I can see your point. If not then they don't know what they're talking about and things will happen as you described regarding things breaking. Whenver I've had a car towed by AAA I've always requested a rollback. Never had an issue getting one.

Wheel lift != dolly.
Locked down on the lift means the lift will pivot when you back up with car. Never worried about column locks lol
The one time I used a dolly, the wheel lock down part pivoted on the "trailer axle" that is then pulled via tow pig, so having an unlocked column would make that a mess to back up or turn.

Yeah I went to the U-haul rules section and it too states to lock the steering wheel. The two I've rented both uhaul people told me to keep the steering unlocked to keep the stress off the steering lock and followed that up with avoid backing up. Did so both times on trips a thousand miles a piece. Backing up is for rookies.
