Story started at a 1996 Z-28 29,000 mile car I bought in 1999 with fire damage due to a faulty air pump check valve. Fixed the car back to stock including .030 over pistons due to the cylinders rusted and stuck. Done the usuall mods though the years. Moser 9 inch, stroker from a buddy that sold his car, clutch shifters, diffrent exhaust ect.
Started on the build about 5 years ago and wanted a fast street car on nitrous. Started gathering parts and tore the interior out and installed a Wolfe Chromoly 10 pt cage,Kirky Seats, Lightweight carpet, Ditched the HVAC, Radio, and any other dead weight.
Here is what I have been working on the past few months. ill try to dig up some old pics from my other computer of the Cage install.
Tore the engine Down and installed Oliver 4 bolt splay caps and poured the water jacket with hard block about 2 inches up. Linebore and honed the cylinders, Drilled and tapped the intake for Fogger jets.

Using my old TEA stage 2 heads, Touched up the seat and valve face. In the process of setting uo stiffer spring for Sloid roller. Went with Manley 4bbl pistons. 2618 alloy and they had them as a shelf pistion which is nice if I ever have to replace one

Cam came in today. Now I can install and start to figure out push rod length. Also got diffrent rings ordered today. Summit sold me a set of Speed pro moly rings. Talked to Fedral mogul today and they reccomeneded sealed power hellfire rings. They have the Ductile Iron top ring and the standard tension oil ring. The Speed Pros had a low tension oil ring. I was concerened because Im only running an Evap out the exhaust and needed to keep oil out of the combustion chamber with spray

Needless to say My hookers had seen their better day. From street driving then hanging in the shop for years the ceramic coating was rough. So about 30 minutes sandblasting, Then VHT paint, Then baking this was the final outcome. Not sure how this paint will work and still have to add some bungs but it is better than they were. We used an old cooker and stuck a torch with a rose bud in the bottom. Temp topped out around 450. VHT recommends 600 for the final stage but that was all it would do

Set of rubber I found on Craiglist. 4 hours worth of driving last night but worth the money

Pulled my welds out from the barm where they had been sitting for 6 years. cleaned them with that acid wheel cleaner from Napa, Then polished them with mothers.
Also got to file fit the rings yesterday. Ended up going with the Speed Pro Hellfire ring. The top Iron Ductile is stiff as hell.
Lastly I polished the crank, cleaned the block and got the rods assymbled on the pistons.

Finally back to work on it. Got to looking at my cam From Cam motion and it was for a 93-94. Basicly it had the short dowl and no counterbore for the opti to sit in. Had to set up and drill and ream. Pulled the short pin and replaced with a long pin. Called cam motion and they said they they didnt have a core for a SR grind like this. No big deal. Took a total or 20 minutes

Got more valvetrain parts in. PBM(made by Erson but a few less dollars) 8.150 chromoly pushrods and ARP rocker studs. Finised degreeing the cam in and got this sweet little $20 2 deg offset key, Then had to modify it of coarse

05-10-2015, 08:25 PM
Got all the piston assembles in. Opened the oil pump and it was trashed. Car had the spider tray tab bend back, causing the lifter dog bone to raise up and allowing the rocker arms to spin, Thus junking 2 lobes on the cam. i guess all the debris took it toll on the oil pump. Timing cover is on and started to fit the windage tray(which has no chance of working) and done some fitting on the pan. Started to assemble the heads and ran into a problem with the valve seals clearing the inner valve spring

Looking good Walt. I had offset bushings for the cam if I knew you were needing them. I have the pack left from when your dad degreed mine in.

Had another productive night. Got a new oil pump today. Went with the stock m155 melling. Changed the spring up 1 setting for a little more oil pressure before bypass. It had a m55HV which is a high volume. its a wonder I didnt suck the stock pan dry. You can see the difference between the 2 gears. Also got the windage tray mounted, also wasnt close to fitting but made it work and clear the rotating and fit with the pan. Pump and Canton pickup mounted

05-11-2015, 08:50 PM
Got the heads assembled. Went back with a stock valve seal because they fit inside triple valve spring. These springs had about 250# closed at around 625-650# @ .650. Using trick flow MLS gaskets which also didnt fit on the dowels. Took some massaging. Studs in then I had to modify the middle washers. However cant get a socket on the nuts so ill have to find a couple 12point nuts.

Got the Iskys installed and welded, Rocker arms on and adjusted. Went to put the stud girdle on and it took some major modifications. Had to clearance for the valve cover(as well as the valve cover) then had to relocated the mounting bolts so i could drill clearance holes for the Center bolt valve covers. after a hard night stud girdle and valve covers were on.

That's the plan. Ive got a progressive controller. Ive got a whole lot more noid than the size shot Ill ever put though it.

more progress today. Got the noids mounted and worked around to get the mounting bolts in. Got 2 sets of lines ran. Bending stainless lines are a pain and very slow

Finally, The direct port is plumbed and done. I have close to 5 hours altogether just bending and flaring stainless nitrous line. Almost ran out of line but make it work. Had to modify the rail bolts( gonna use socket head cap screws) Hopefully this weekend I can prime the oil system, trim the intake gaskets and mount the intake.

06-01-2015, 07:16 PM
Had to re route my Vent tube due to all the crap on the Intake. This should work. also i bought a piece of stock and was going to make a billet oil pump drive, However i didnt want to take a couple days and try to find new bushings right now, So I made the steel piece to help hold it

We are going to take a stab at it. It has a wideband so that is a plus. I dont know of anyone around here in Kentucky anymore that has a dyno and tunes LT1s

Finished up the Nitrous wiring and plumbing today. Got the rear wheels on. An fittings came in to finish up the crank case evap crap.
Since I havent got a driveshaft yet and wont till next week I took an old stocker and added a section to make it longer to try out the trans. Trans, 2 step, and brake work perfect.

I guess a project is never really done but this one is about it(minus a drive shaft). Spent about 2 hours vaccuming and washin crap that has been collection on it for the past 7 years. Next step is tuning and track times.

07-13-2015, 06:08 AM
Thanks fellers, Hope the rain holds off tomorrow so we can get some nitrous passes in. The hood is a Glasstek hood. I have one of the common 2 3/4 raise hoods that I bought used and painted white. Guy stopped me one night and had a fit to buy it to put on his white 97. Long story short I sold mine and bought this one and came out about even

I heard that. Coverter is pretty tight, I think I need to up the 2 step some more. It was leaving at 3000. First spray pass I delayed the nitrous, leaving at 60%@.5 sec delay and at 100% at 1 sec. 60 ft was a 1.6ish. This pass came out @100% and it dropped to 1.55. Hot as hell, Humid and muggy.

So I broke the windshield last year with a ratchet strap I was using to hold to hood up. Got a new one and pulled all the plastic vents off and looked at it for a few minutes, picked up a cut off wheel and went to work. There is a ton more room. Not the prettiest but the plastic covers it all up. 367973679636798
