Rust on things

i bought some used comp 1.6 rr's and they came in with some rust. can i take that off with sand paper or should i just leave it on there to give my car more character? thanks

Let them soak in atf for a day then scrub with a brass gun cleaning brush. Rinse in carb cleaner and repeat
