View Full Version : My first build thread project " bail money"

bustedassz28
11-28-2014, 06:27 PM
Hey guys, this whole thing started cuz i was bored at work and was searching craigslist. The ad read 93 z28 full bolt ons needs a fuel pump and rear end i have the parts but cant finish something very important came up. So a few hours later i meet with the seller and find out he needs money by 10:00 am the next day because he has a warrant for his arrest, hence " project bail money"! Anyway, a few mins later and a few hundred less than his asking price, i brought this home......

Nice! Heck of a bargaining opportunity right there

Do you have some plans in mind, other than the necessary repairs, yet?

So, i start tinkering with the no start issue. Car starts and dies, seller said fuel pump, i thought vats, we were both wrong. The computer wasnt bolted down and apparantly was pulling on the dark blue fuel injector enable wire and it snapped. Spliced it back together and vroom !! Loud rumbling throuh the flowmaster at 1:30 a.m. Yea my neighbors love me. Take it for a spin and the rear end is toast. Go home, pull it apart; it kicked a c clip but the 4:11 ring and pinion is fine, its gonna get re installed in spring. For now i swapped i a complete 323 and added a girdle diff cover

bustedassz28
11-28-2014, 07:05 PM
The next day i cut off the flowmaster cat back, i woulda kept it but it had a loose baffle jingling around n sounded like crap. A $23 glasspack and im in business. Sounds pretty good with the pacesetter longtubes ory and !cats

bustedassz28
11-28-2014, 07:12 PM
Brand new wheels, never been torqued down, tires are about half life left. So, i grabbed a six pack, sawzall, bfh, cutoff wheel and guess what they fit haha! I made this little device to make things easier and uniform...

bustedassz28
11-28-2014, 07:16 PM
Next i did a battery relocation to the trunk, used 0 gauge wire and found this cool batt cutoff switch at oreilly's. It has a removable key and its perfect in the trunk lock hole......

what kind of engine you looking for lol. I got all kinds

idk, open to anything thats a good deal really, i'm on a budget like everyone else.i'd love to run 10s but being realistic, on my budget id behappy with 11s and room for improvement. I was looking into l.e. Heads n cam packages but seems i can get an entire motor for close to that price. My motor runs fine, just wanna go fast on a budget hence the nitrous kit....

Sure, il pm with him no problem. As far as budget, as we all know it's relative, but I'd say $1000, but if there's a great deal to be had anything is possible. I started just wanting a cam, then I need heads etc you know. What I can say for sure tho is I'm trying to buy used parts, generally speaking most of them are half price, and as far as I'm concerned that's the most bang for the buck.

well got a lil more done last night, wrapped up the shifter install, just gotta get 2 more torx screws. then I pulled the other valve cover to paint it and found this..... would you guys worry about one mismatched rocker? theyre all comp cams roller just the odd one is a different style from cc....???? just don't wanna waste money on new rockers if I don't have too

bustedassz28
12-01-2014, 09:05 PM
hey guys, checkin out a used cc306 cam, what do all think? looks in good shape, just not too good with cam selection, but from what ive been reading it looks pretty good, comments/criticism is welcome/needed

The odd rocker is the new style pro mag, and the others are the older, not made anymore pro mags.

I wouldn't worry about it, BUT, I would worry about how or why it got there.

ok got that stuff put in, il be doing the blow down tube tonight, for now I'm otta parts and otta beer.....the window switch location is just temporary, wanted it to be accessible for now, I left the wires long enough to put it in the glove box or center console

bustedassz28
12-10-2014, 05:45 PM
well its been a few days, I got a bit more done, works been stressin me out so I hit the garage a few nights to get my head right, anyways.....I put a grant gt steering wheel on, not sure where it came from; been hangin in the garage for years. tinted the windows 5% rear 20% fronts, gonna do a 8 inch strip across the windshield too. shed some weight in the front end; removed unnecessary clutter, and made a template for a block-off plate / air dam. and then I just slapped the intake/ vcs on temporarily too see what it looked like and get motivated, its gonna stay loose for now, if funds allow after Christmas I really really wanna slap a le cam in there.......

bustedassz28
12-12-2014, 06:53 PM
Well, got a small box from jegs :( n a lil more work done, finished my block off plate, bent the inner bumper support up to get better airflow to the radiator, trans cooler, and maybe cai, since the previous owner already cut the bumper open, why i have no idea; air was just hitting the inner support- dumbass.. Also put in my 160 stat and my rear end main cap studs- since i cant afford a 9 inch now. Figuring with the studs, girdle cover, and current 323 gears i should be ok for awhile, anyways heres some pics.

Nice build - I like how resourceful you've been with buying the used parts and making them work. With the 3.23's and that tire height, it should go 200!

bustedassz28
01-15-2015, 05:55 PM
^^^^ Thx, yeah the tires were free and mounted already, gonna burn em up and get different ones, I got a 4;11 im putting in soon, mentioned in post #4. So, I had some spare time and got a lil more done, mom n dad got me my skinnies for xmas, ran to discount tire n grabbed some 185s. Whatcha guys think?

01-15-2015, 06:01 PM
3147731478Got home from work last night and had some packages waiting, rear coil springs from rock auto and my alt relo/ps delete bracket I got from Sinistr; great guy btw very helpful and a great seller- thx man. Heres the relo setup....

bustedassz28
01-15-2015, 06:04 PM
Also ordered founders performance panhard bar, lower control arms and relo brackets, should be here tues. And I'm real close to calling lloyd Elliot for my cam, just need a few more bucks, cant wait for that purchase! Stay tuned....

bustedassz28
01-16-2015, 07:17 PM
3148631487Spent a lil more time in the garage, looped the power steering, shed some weight / clutter (about 24 lbs) got my rear springs in gained a good inch in height...

bustedassz28
01-19-2015, 05:48 PM
Well a bit more progress, I spent more time than I hoped fixing a nasty nasty header gasket leak, all four cylinders on the pass side :(. I read I a build thread recently about a guy using a shop vac in the tailpipe and running a burning incense stick along the header mating surface; worked like a charm. also gotta admit even though it was a pain in my ass to fix, im very very happy the noise wasn't a rocker or lifter....

bustedassz28
01-19-2015, 05:53 PM
Then I found a few more beers and a new sawzall blade ( don't worry I still have 9 fingers left  ) and got the ball rolling on my 8.8 rear, just gotta get some time off work ( and no snow ) to get my ford rear from the junkyard.... more 31578315793158031581pics

3162631625316243162331622^^^ ok thx man, il start there then. got a lil more done on my rear end jig, like axle locators, pinion locator, and an integrated toque arm mount jig. just gotta add a lil more structural rigidity, locators for the spring perches and axle tubes ( in relation to axle/tube spacing). Let me know what you guys think, constructive criticism is needed here, its my first time doing a rearend like this. I think I have all my bases covered tho and it should work....

Lost about 25/30 lbs up front, and found these gauges on sale, one for coolant temp the other tranny temp due to my stall speed, just wanna make sure my cooler is working good. The coolant temp guage is because just before winter the stock one seemed erratic, dont know if i have an air pocket or other issues... I know they dont match but they were on clearance $8.87 each with tax....

02-02-2015, 06:03 PM
To do list is, put bumper ski back on (obviously), pull factory carpet/padding and replace with ozite, call lloyd elliot for my cam/springs and such ( on payday :/ ) try to locate a 8.8 3:73, theyre hard to find around here, got my dad lookin into it- alotta contact with local junkyards

bustedassz28
02-14-2015, 06:24 PM
Well, things are going a bit slow, we got nailed with some snow so I was busy plowing but its all good. Still progressing by ordering parts, got a used set of nitto 555r off ebay, 275 50 15 so rearend gearing wont be so crucial since im having a hard time finding my 8.8. I also sent payment to Lloyd for my cam/spring kit, he said about 2 weeks; I really cant wait for that, gonna call jegs now for my pushrod length checker, anyways a couple more pics for u guys.....

02-24-2015, 09:45 PM
Well, found some motivation/beer (thx dawdaw!) dawdaw and got my rear suspension wrapped up, the lower contolr arms were a real bitch to get out too but its done nonetheless. Think I have that same jack from the 1980s thats awesome. Check ford explorers for the rear gears seem to be lots of 3.73 around here. Axle code 46 for a open read and D4 is a posie

bustedassz28
02-25-2015, 09:15 PM
Thx for the comments / kind words guys! Hey ,mikey 2 questions: Looks like you have the same cam i'm waiting on, how do you like it / what can i expect? Next, i see you have a crown vic rear ive been thinkin about doing one also, is it the same idea as a ranger explorer swap? How many spline axles? I been lookin for a ranger/mustang rear so i can use my stock axles, sorry for all the questions and thx in advance for the help! mikey4play

mikey4play
02-25-2015, 09:41 PM
I am just now getting my car back together.have not even started it yet. I used the complete axle out of the crown vic still 28 spline. I basically copied the Hiltsy mount made for the explorer.

bustedassz28
02-25-2015, 11:41 PM
Ah ok, did u use the ten bolt axle tubes or is the crown vic rear very close in width to the ten bolt where you can sneak by? Reason i ask is, if its 1/4 or 1/2 in difference then i might be able to just cut and reweld the spring perches and such, swapping tubes leaves alot of room for error as far as alignment is concerned. Truing bars n jigs bring the build cost way up. Do u have any pics? mikey4play

mikey4play
02-26-2015, 05:56 PM
I used the complete crown vic axle. I bought new brackets from racecraft that I had seen from another build. Was going to buy the Hiltsy mount kit but the crown vice center section is shaped different from the explorer so I just copied it. Had a friend redrill my bolt pattern and 10 bolt brake brackets. I did just weld my torque arm bracket on since the previous owner cut it up to fit a 12 bolt. 319353193631940319373193831939

bustedassz28
02-26-2015, 08:34 PM

02-27-2015, 05:29 AM
The bigest down fall of this axle. It's about a 1/8 inch a side wider than the 10bolt. My 295's still clear but it is tight on the outer wheel lip now. My car is not lowered so I think it will be ok. Also these only came with 28 spline axles.

I got to the fun part of trying to get the oil pan bolts out; got the two fronts out and called it quits, looks like a royal bitch to get some of the pan bolts out. im gonna try again tonight tho, maybe I was having a ruff time yesterday cuz it was 5 a.m. when I got done and cuz I ran out of beer....:face_shocked: 32045320463204732048

SSlowBoat
03-08-2015, 09:06 PM
Factory chains are known for that, even new,you can just get the cloyes crank gear to take up the slack. Also pulling the short pin ain't a big deal

32251322523225332254been doin some odds n ends stuff now that im drivin it. even after the 160 t-stat n new water pump I still had my overheating problem. after an hour of inspection I realized the radiator wasn't flowing for shit, it was hard to tell because the steam tube was flowing real good blocking my view of what was going on inside the rad, once the coolant was low I was able to see only a trickle running through the rad itself, put a new rad in and connected my autometer gauge, she stays at a solid 170 degrees now. I also noticed my shift light stopped working on my monster tach :/ it worked fine before winter, if I adjust the sift point all the way down it lights up constant, turn it up ad nothing... anyone seen this? or got a fix for it? ...... anyways, some glamour shots from the gas station....

So. I got the fuel pump installed, no real issues with that and its surprisingly quiet, actually quieter than the stock one. Also got the msd setup all wired and working. The 6al seems to make the car run alot smoother and i wired the retard box to my nitrous button, seems to be working, when i arm the system (bottle off ) i hit the button and the idle drops a bit, i got a 6 deg chip in now. So all i have to do now is throw the hot wire kit and my plugs in..... And wait for this damn rain to stop :/

bustedassz28
05-13-2015, 10:13 AM
Not yet, I'm gonna seal and check for leaks on the fuel side this afternoon ( n20 lines are done as you saw) then maybe later on tonight, there's a factory road nearby that's pretty safe for testing late night, just don't tell my wife ! She already threatened to cut my spark plugs if I sprayed on the street haha! Cut spark plugs... She knows a lil about cars ;)

bustedassz28
05-14-2015, 12:47 AM
Ok fellas, I sprayed it twice, I love it !! But I have an idling issue, is it possible that n/a it doesn't like the plugs or gap? Currently have br7s @.35. I noticed this right after I changed the plugs, before I ever sprayed, I thought it had to warm up and just shrugged it off. But tonight before spraying I was driving it to warm it up and the rpms dropped every couple stop signs, almost enuff to kill the engine, had to feather the gas to bring it back up....@ chopstix

bustedassz28

Il check the fuel psi again n bypass the msd box, this is weird, it ran fine, then all of a sudden idled weird, this is aggravating ...

05-14-2015, 12:10 PM
Il check for vacuum leaks too...

not sure if its the same for a 93 but for my 95 its key on pump gas 3 times and turn key off

Ok guys update, the car was having a hard time starting, so I was having to hold the gas down to start and idle. Bypassed the msd setup and it seems to be fine. Almost seems the timing is getting retarded on it's own, I'm gonna start digging and il update, open for suggestions tho, ign setup in sig..

bustedassz28
07-01-2015, 02:46 AM
Well its been awhile and unfortunately the only update i have is me getting really pissed. I sent my msd stuff back to them for repair, they charged me $70, sent my stuff back via fedex, and apparantly it made it to illinois and is now lost, sooo, for the last week ive been calling fed ex and msd, getting the run around and playing the blame game, best part is msd didnt insure my package, im really getting frustrated. Other than that ive been enjoying the car, its running great, just cant spray it.........

bustedassz28
07-01-2015, 02:53 AM
Oh, and this is the second time fedex has lost my car stuff in the last 4 months, the last package got stuck in vermont or montana or something, still aint seen that one, fortunately the sender was a member on here and he took care of me, another thumbs up for ltx tech !!!

dawdaw
07-01-2015, 03:35 AM
Damn that sucks. Luckily over the years I have only had an issue once with fed ex. Don't worry it'll come together

bustedassz28
07-01-2015, 03:43 AM
Thx man, i see youve had much worse luck than me, hows youre ride coming along ??? Im still waiting for a track video...... ;)

dawdaw
07-01-2015, 04:17 AM
Just waiting for the trans. I went to the track last weekend and it took out a stupid metal clip on the pump and lost most trans pressure.

bustedassz28
10-04-2015, 06:34 AM
So.... I'm still around, i know its been a while, but had some personal pitfalls and other b.s. Like everyone else. Anyways, i hooked up with a member on here joez96 who gave me a great deal on an ignition box since those f@#ckers at fed ex lost mine and he also hooked me up with a new nitrous plate setup, gave me a great deal, i can't say enough good things about joe super cool guy and an excellent seller, i highly recommend him to anybody, and btw this guy has a badass camaro, absolutely beautiful. Anywho, i finally got to the track and had a best run of 13.2, track prep sucked ass. Then on my fourth pass i hit the nitrous (off the button) a lil in first, a lil in second and i heard a lil knocking so i shut her down, yup spun a bearing. So that sucks, especially since i was on my way to my goal of 12's cuz i woulda hit it for sure, no doubt. Which leads me to where i am now, i found a killer deal on a 5.3 drivetrain from a tahoe and im slowly gathering parts for my swap, in my case it was the smartest thing i could do moneywise. So if you have seen my posts in the for sale section now you know why and there will be more stuff for sale soon. Now my next question: Do i keep posting progress in this build thread or do i start a new one? What are the rules on that ? Thx again to joeZ96
