View Full Version : Thinking about switching cars.. Dont hate me!

Dont worry.. Its not a mustang (unless its a 03/04 Cobra thats in good condition for $8,000 ), and wouldnt ever be a ricer.. But rather a LS1 Z28 or T/A.

Now some might ask me "But Mike, Why the hell would you want to do that?"

And my response would be "Because I want something newer."

Since LT1 prices have went way down over the past few months, I dont think it would really even be worth selling my Formula since I'd lose a ton of money on it. BUT, I wouldnt be able to keep both on the road. So having 2 would almost be pointless.

I'd really miss my Formula if I were to sell it, because I've had the most fun in it out of all my cars, and the sound of it makes me go like this ---> :D everytime I start it up and drive it. I'm more attached to my Formula than any of my previous F-Bodies, and I dont want to see it go for an extremely cheap price which is what it would probibly go for with the way the prices of LT1 cars are going right now. I've got about $1,600 in mods and other various things done to it, which isnt much compared to many cars, but its still nothing that will really bring the value up that much..

So heres my situation, I really want a LS1 car, but love my Formula, and dont know if its worth it to keep my Formula, not drive it, and get a LS1 F-Body, or sell my Formula and get a LS1 and mod it with the money from what ever I get from it.

Its one of the cleanest LT1's I have ever seen (up close anyway), and looks like its got about 1/3 of the actual milage on the car (has 167K). It runs great, and is very clean, so thats why it would kill me to let it go for dirt cheap with the prices now.

Here are some pics of my Formula

too late.. :(

LOL. Just kidding. They like LT1's, but they just work a lot more with the LS series cars. They just build this bad ass 396 LT1 Z28 over the summer. But I'm the only current guy there with a LT1 powered car.

I was kinda in this position so I bought a cam hoping I'd put it in and that'd satisfy my need for something new. Now I think I'm going to sell the cam and use it as a down payment on a newer truck.

I tried that too.. except with a new engine.

I sold it already to a friend for what I got it for since my plans are being delayed.

I've had both LT1 & LS1, drove a lot of LT1's and 3 LS1 and even an LS7 car....all I've gotta say is the LSx cars are sooo much easier to mod and make power. The Gen III/IV is a much better design then the Gen II. Couple reasons why because everyone hates me:

You rarely see a Stock LS1 car under 300 RWHP (Mostly 97-99 if you do)
Most parts are cheaper (Ex. Clutch?)
Shit ton more aftermarket for the LSx
Parts are easier to come by

I myself am happy I did the swicth.

I LOVE being the so-called underdog with my LT1. I thought about buying an LS1 car many times. I'm glad I didn't. You rarely see LT1 cars running under 12.00. I mean they are out there, don't get me wrong, but every local track will be full of LS1's running low-mid 12's and LT1's running low 13's. I didn't want to sell-out and get the easy platform to modify. No way. When I line up next to a built LS1 I am supposed to lose, and that's perfectly ok with me. Hopefully i'll get my car down into the low 11's this year...n/a, and still on the stock shortblock. That will make the LS1 guys scratch their heads, lol.

Well said, with the plans I have for my car it will walk most Ls1s. and I like that having the ''under dog'' that will eat an Ls1.. I would love to have an Ls1, but I have an Lt1 and I am enjoying building it up and making it faster. .. hopefully sometime soon I can get an Ls1 T/A and make it fast, but I will still keep the little Lt1.

back on topic,
I think your formula is so bad ass and clean looking.. its such a tough decision cuz yours looks perfect but an Ls1 would be bad ass.. I would say only get rid of your car if you find the exact car you want.. the exact color you want, the exact options ETC.. I wouldnt get rid of a car like yours unless it was for another car that I loved everything about.. it may take some time to find but it will be worth it.. if you can keep the formula and find an inexpensive Ls1 car, that would be awesome to still have your car and an Ls1.

WildRidez

I own both and I must say I really like my Lt1's more just b/c I am not a big fan of the body style on the LS1's.. But I grew up on lt1's and all that stuff before ls1's came around so I guess that is why I still like them better.. But if I was you I would hold onto your formula and get into an LS1 car. It's hard to put a price tag on a beautiful car and something isn't really doing good in the market right now.

Yeah.. I would like to get at least $3,300 for the entire car as it sits right now.. Which still I kinda feel like I just might as well keep it. Since I'd figure:

SLP LM2 Exhaust: $370
Pasesetter Ceramic Coated LT's: $360
ORY: $125
Brand freakin new tires (not even 1,500 miles on them): $500
Morosso CAI: $200
Trick Flow intake elbow: $70

That alone is $1,625 worth of stuff done to it (and I know I am missing some stuff).. So it would basically be like me selling the car for $1,600. I know things depreciate, but still.. Thats why I dont want to let it go, but its not worth much more than that anyways according to the "book value" of it...

Maybe I should keep it and make a track car out of it or something? Wouldnt happen right away.. But might be a slow project that would happen over time.

Keep your formula, which I assume is payed off. Stick a car cover over it worst case scenario, and go get an LS1. Keep the formula as an emergency vehicle or whatever, especially if you love the car and won't get shit for it anyways. There is nothing wrong with keeping the car off the road, you can even get storage insurance for it if you are worried about it being damaged while it's off the road.

I think thats an awesome idea to keep it and make a track car out of it--and if you had another car you could slowly build up the hawk when you get money and time.. you wouldnt have to rush and it would be bad ass when its done.

I have been going through this debate for about 6 months now. I have decided that I am going to get a 01-02 SS hardtop A4 not sure on color yet and KEEPING the LT1. I am going to most likely put a different exhaust on the car(bullets dumped at the rearend now) and make this my everyday driver. The SS will be the track and weekend driver. We all know on this site how much fun our LT1s are on the street and that is one thing I love about my car and that is the reason I plan on keeping it.

Keep it man I have had to many nice cars that I sold that I would give my left nut to get back.

I'm sure we will all still accept you on this site, just most of the time, we would be tellin you to post on ls1tech.

Why not be different? Everyone wants the god almighty LS1 car (I'm not serious, we all know its not true). So screw it, let them have it. I'd rather be the underdog (as previously mentioned) and suprise the people you can put under with the LT1 car.

From what Ive heard and seen, bolt on lt1 can take a bolt on ls1.

YZF

Bolt on LT1 might do 325hp/350tq..... those are good numbers for a stock LS1.

A bolt on LS1 car should make 360-370hp...

Yeah, BMW owners aren't typically the type to take car of their vehicles. My aunt had a Chrysler. The engine blew under 100k miles. Apparently the oil has to be changed every once in a while.

I've never really been a fan of BMW's.. Even the newer ones. I used to say the same thing about Mercedes, but then my mother bought a CLK 430, and its a great car. Very comfortable, rides outstanding, and is pretty quick. Only import i'd ever consider owning.

Other than that.. I think I'm going to stick to my F-Bodies and other GM products. ;)

I must say I was the same way til I bought myself a 03 M3 and boosted it.. That damn car was great didn't have any problems with it at all.. I loved it til someone offered the right cash for it, and that was the end :D. But then again I did buy it brand new so I guess that is a plus. I doubt I would get myself into another one but I had great luck with mine.
