Question for my stereo savy friends. My patrol vehicle is a 2007 Chevy Tahoe. Factory radio with CD player. Sometime while I was either out hurt or in the school the radio began to malfunction. What it does is...no matter how u have the eq settings set...its super treble and only front tweeters. Now..working this summer I learned that if I leave the truck idle for a while with no AC on...the full "system" will come back (bass, mids, tweets, all speakers). So what I have been doing is...I come in for duty..fire it up first thing...close the windows and crank the heat. If it can sit for a lil like that, by the time I get a call or go patrol...the system is 100%.
With that being said...does anyone know what in the stereo is being affected by temp and is there a fix so I don't have to jump into a 200 degree truck wearing my monkey suit and liquifying under my vest (lol)? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Here is one explanation I received from a friend who is in the electronics business:
"Radios internal boards expand and retract with temperature which sometimes causes breaks in solder joints in boards sounds like its in the preamp output section of your radio when the truck is hot board expands and makes contact when you cool it down it contracts and loses contact causing certain speakers to cut out........time for a new radio"

Larry I completely agree with the above. With the symptoms and resolution you're experiencing, its time for a new one or to have that one sent out and repaired.

Ugh... that sucks, cause I know there is no way the Chief will OK spending money on replacing a head unit for MUSIC.

Must be a gm SUV thang! My damn 6 disc head unit in my Yukon seems to forget it has 6 disc in it, did it once before and eventually worked again. This time it's not coming back. Maybe another recall? Lol

I agree as well as far as the thermal problem thing goes (electronics dont really like thermal changes one way or the other),so you might go talk to the local dealer where somebody there may be able to pull a few strings to get it warrantied out for customer satisfaction but let them know that its not in the budget to pay full price for it. I can only say that if it was me talking to a local copper I would at least get said copper a price break if not free.
I know we did this kind of thing all the time for the customers we liked back in the day when I worked for a GM dealership so it is totally do-able if somebody really wants to do it.
If you cant get this handled by them then let us know because somebody here may have one to donate. Too bad my Avalanche is different cause that would be a great reason to upgrade completely guilt free LOL.

Ill give it a shot... but ill go by the book first and write it up the way all of u have explained and see how it goes. Truck needs service anyways so maybe a package fix can happen. Evap code and air bag malfunction lights are back up on the dash... and yesterday... it gave me a hard time starting.

pull the speaker connectors off no the back of the radio and check for dirt/grease or spread out connectors not making contacts. sometimes just squeezin the contacts a little tighter fixes crap like that.
