Well many of u have seen some of these pics on my Facebook.... but here was my yesterday...lol.

I worked the 7a to 7p shift... well, at least that was what I was scheduled for.

A local car club was having a car show just outside my twp to raise money for a young man with muscular distrophy at 530pm.

SINCE I had NO calls dispatched to me the entire day, I went and made a presence and hung out.

At 6:20 I told the organizers that I was gonna go end my shift and I would swing by with the camaro.

So...I roll out of the shopping center...to our main highway... Route 100.

As I am sitting in the turning lane waiting for the lights to cycle...I watch a little car HAULING ass south bound. THIS late in my shift I have no intentions of going after it... but I creep fwd so I can see if he crashed further down because its a merge lane. Well he didnt... but as I crept fwd...I saw a guy in a bright yellow shirt getting out of a tradh truck in traffic.... lil bit of smoke comin from between the cab and the trash "box....

A closer look...and I can see flames popping up between the cab and the box...... lights.... sirens....and a SLOW creep across 4+ lanes of the highway... here is a shot of what my IN CAR camera caught as I worked to get through on coming traffic...the wrong way.

I work my way around the truck...put my tahoe sideways to block the lanes... and I run up to make sure no one else is jnside the truck.....


Thats when I realize fluids are now running downhill back to my tahoe...and UNDER it.

Sooo I actually got caught on video turning and running back ... by a passerby....that was sent to me as a screen shot.

I JUMP IN THE TRUCK... and pull it off the trail of fluids...

Just in time...yes, they ignited...

Several neighboring Police Departments arrived on location to help me with traffic... and moving all of the people stuck on the highway behind me...

People SUCK at following directions....

Well as the fire got hotter...and fd was not on scene yet... this started hissing....black smoke started billowing.... then a passenger rear tire exploded and l and launched off of the rim...rolling and landing off the side of the road to the right of the truck....

Shortly there after...same happened on the driver side... that tire actually launched across... 7nlanes of traffic and the center median and came to rest in the grass outside of CHILIs...

Till fire arrived on scene...a total of 4 or 5 companies... all we could do...was keep moving back...keep turning traffic around...and watched it burn....

Needless to say... I never made it back to the show...

I remained on locatio till 11pm... and although the road was not opened till 230 am... the truck was towed away at 1130 after they put new wheels and tires on the rear.

Why did it take soooo long.....u ask. Well thr trash inside the boxx was also on fire...so the exterior fire had to be put out...then the fd used a big ol saw to cut the rear latches ...then a heavy duty tow used its boom to force the rear door open...then we had to wait for equipt to arrive on location to pull ALL of the trash out and on to my highway.

HAZMAT and an enviornmental company had to come out on scene for all of the diesel and trash run off...and finally Penn Dot had to come out to fix the road since the truck literally burned IN TO the asphalt...

After I got changed..and handled some stuff at the PD... I went back down to the scene with the camaro to take some more pics....

Let me tell u.. wm manager came out and he took control... he called out LEWIS ENVIORNMENTAL... he called and worked with penn dot... he got a loader and dumpster out there for the trash transfer... he got the heavy tow set up.... they handled EVERYTHING...even a food truck.

Thats the beauty of the job. I woulda stayed longer...but we are legally obligated to NOT work more than 16 hrs straight.... so I packed up and my partner covered the rest till 230.

That's crazy! So what exactly caused the fire?

Not sure... but the driver reported that earlier in the day he had to call out the service truck due to a hydraulics leak....right behind the cab and in front of the trash box....

Coincidence???

It was nasty... but I think the burn in general was what was worse. The burning tires choked me several times

Trash truck fires are nasty...we had a City of Dover truck's load catch fire; he pulled off the road and dumped the entire flaming trash pile and pulled the truck away. Only problem is he did this on the concrete pad in front of Dover Fire Sta. 2. They literally had to run the trucks in place inside the fire house to put the fire out.
