I am looking to get a tig welder. Because I'm going to need it for things my mig just won't be able to do on my builds.

I'm wanting to get the 110/220 because my garage doesn't have a 220 and I need to steel from my dryer outlet in house when I need to run 220. And figure the 110 in garage will be good for the lighter parts in need to weld. So any experience with this one or input?

They're good value welders, but according to folks over on the Garage Journal forums, they're not really serviceable, so when they break, they BREAK.

Fastbird do you have any input on a good one? If I'm going to spend this much. I would like it to be repairable.

I don't because I've never tigged anything. I was just reporting to you first hand experiences people from GJ forum have had, trying to be helpful.

I know i will be welding chromoly and SS for sure. When doing exhaust and cage ect.

I figure i will be welding aluminum down the road on other projects. In a few years. Figured i should be ready.

Thanks it was helpful. I don't want a 850.00 machine to break and be stuck with an expensive paper weight. lol

I'd say if you're going to plunk down, find a decent combination Mig/Tig. I know there's a few out there.

There is a huge increase in price from a machine that can weld aluminum and one that can do everything else.
Regarding an ac tig machine, this will be my next purchase.

Yes the price stings, but that's a quality mach that will last for decades

Jesus 1600:eek:

I already have a Lincoln 110/220 mig. And I love it.

I know its high, buts its a high quality machine. I've been tempted to try out the cheaper overseas made ones but if it breaks, the parts come off the boat. Check out craigslist for used ones. I'd much rather buy a used one at that same price as a cheap new one. Just my opinion though. Take it with a grain of salt.

Also, not sure if you know this but any regular arc (stick) machine can be made into a tig setup. Just need to reverse polarity, and add argon to the tig rig.

No help with a tig but I have Eastwoods 220v mig and it works great, all the consumables can be bought at the local welding shop.

i have a htp mig/tig thats broke, and only they service them, themselves since they are an italian company. id have to ship it truck freight to them in the midwest, pay for repair, and return shipping. hence why it no fixed yet. so dont buy htp lol

FWIW, every review I have read about the Eastwood welders notes that their customer service is top notch, despite some people having problems out of the box.

From what I have seen, they are good occasional use hobby welders, but really aren't beefy enough to stand up to the type of a buse that a miller or a lincoln or even some of the more midgrade units can handle.

That being said, eastwood is probably the direction I will go when I get the scratch together for a welder. I don't need the production type durability, I'm just fabbing a few things for my car and putting a cage in.

I may need to bite the bullet and spend more. It will get a lot of use. I got the TA. Then will be building my Nova with plans on building a bike and truck once we get a new place.

Plus people come to me time to time as is for me to mig weld stuff.

It may take a while but it will pay for itself.
