Pics will be posted tomorrow after the transaction is complete.

Starting to have little issues here and there with the truck so it's time to take it off daily driver status and save it for towing/hauling shit duties. Went and looked at a car today. It's a hoopdie, but it's a running driving hoopdie with no appearent drivetrain issues. It's also high miles, but it's cheaper to replace a car than it is a diesel dually.

It's V8, but not LTX. It's a 97. It's a GM product.

3 clues for the price of 1 lol

that is a small northstar in that thing.i was a gm tech that was suppose to be a seville, caddy turned down the design and old's said we'll take it,that was the rumor...the battery is under the back seat for those who might care and don't know, and the starter is under the intake manifold.

Car certainly earned it's heap of crap title today. Needs a new water pump seal after it tried to overheat on the way home tonight. And of course the windshield got shitted up so I had to drive with my head hanging out like a dog. In 20 degree weather.

I just hope I didn't warp a head and that the water pump that is originally the problem is still the only problem that is keeping this thing from being mechanically sound for the next year or so.

I don't think it is, car ran fine after it cooled down for a bit and I got some coolant back in it before it got too cool. Fortunately the wife is off tomorrow, so she's going to take me to work and I'm going to do the water pump tomorrow night after I get off.

Iirc...when the northstar was intoduced.. one of the tests they did was run the caddy thru the dessert with no coolant... lol. For real!

Well hopefully that's the case here. I really think it's fine though once I figure out what the leak is and plug it.

Well not 100 percent but definitely in the right direction. Swapped water pumps tonight, found an almost brand spanking new water pump in there without the provided O-ring. Installed my new water pump with the appropriate O-ring. Everything was going well until the car got up to about 220 degrees (when the fans kick on and such) and then I started seeing smoke that could only mean that the leak was back. But not anywhere near as bad as before. So this weekend I'm going to permatex the fuck out of the back of the housing. Then it should be problem solved.

I stand corrected, leaks just as bad as before, but I know exactly where it is. at least I know the rest of the cooling system is up to snuff, held it right were it was supposed until the coolant got hot enough to push the O-ring that came with the new water pump.

And it's not the damned head gaskets. PHEEEEWWW

Ok, new water pump is glued in. Shouldn't have a sealing issue anymore. Also did plugs and wires, and no wonder the car didn't idle as good as it should have (or run that great for that matter) besides the constant ejection of antifreeze, I found cheap plugs incorrectly gapped (minimum of .10 over the factory spec, some almost .20 over! Seems like the last guy to do the spark plugs just took them out of the box and stuck them in without checking.)

Also found out that the car is using oil in one cylinder. I'll have to get a compression checker on there and find out if it's blow by or a bad valve seal. My money is on the valve seal. Either way it probably won't get fixed for a long time if ever. We will see.

And so far it's fixed! Just have to top off the expansion tank and do an oil change now.

Day one and no new leaks! Now I can track down the highway speed issue where the car suddenly goes into limp mode and/or won't accelerate or rev up. Got a couple of good leads on that and the rough idle issue. Car runs good enough to get back and forth from work so that's good enough for me lol

Then it's time for glasspacks and to piss off the old geezer across the street who called the cops on us when we were moving in because we parked on the wrong side of the street and the signs weren't readily appearent :D

Think the car finally gave me a clue as to what specifically is causing my limp mode issues. Yesterday and today the traction active light would flash and bam limp mode. On the way home from work I turned traction control off and so far no issues.

Just be ware when they start drinking coolant keep an eye on the oil because they are known to spin bearings like the 3.8s. My buddy had a car like yours and started drinking coolant and either spun a bearing first or hydrolocked and stripped the bearings. so they have a name as the deathstar to a lot of ppl. good luck either way

Miracle of miracles this one doesn't. Just did oil change a couple of days ago and no coolant in the oil. It also runs too well to be eating coolant and the cooling system isn't getting pressurized.

From the reading up I've done, the reason people don't like these engines is because they are very unforgiving of deviation from the maintenance schedule. But people being people and inherently lazy about things like this, want to blame the engine when it lets go for their lack of diligence in the upkeep.
