View Full Version : Complete Trans Am LED Conversion (Interior & Exterior) - WARNING PIC HEAVY

Blackbird96WS6

After lots of hunting and searching online and finding that nobody's really taken the time to make a complete write-up for this, I started doing my own digging and pulling various parts off my car to compile a COMPLETE list of every single bulb that goes in the car for anyone else who wants to do the same or even just certain bulbs. I put this all into Excel and then broke it out into sections, the same way SuperBrightLEDs.com has it broken out for simplicity when purchasing.

My list shows what only what is necessary for my car, a 96 Trans Am M6. I know the V6s will require a different number of bulbs in the gauge cluster, and I don't know the amount for Camaros, but this is a great start for anyone with a Camaro looking to make a list to compare.

I also pulled my gauge cluster out and took some good pictures of it for anyone else's reference on how many and where each bulb goes. I searched quite a bit on Google and couldn't find any good pictures of the backside of a cluster with the cover off, so you're welcome. Btw, you WILL need to order new socket bases for the 7 larger bulbs on the back, which are in my part list below. The original socket bases do NOT work with the wedge base LEDs.

Under the section for "Interior Dashboard", the Warning Indicators are as listed (12 total, subtract accordingly if you don't have TCS in your car):
ABS INOP
CHECK GAUGES
LOW OIL
SEATBELT
PARKING BRAKE
TCS OFF
AIR BAG
LOW COOLANT
LOW TRAC
SERVICE ENGINE SOON
SECURITY
SKIP SHIFT

Also, since my car is a manual, there is no light for the shifter, but for you auto guys, the LED bulb you'll need for the Automatic Shifter Indicator plate is a 74-xHP. (The "x" indicates the color of the LED, as you'll see below; almost all of mine are “R” for red, since I'm planning to go to a full red LED interior. Certain LEDs I left the stock color to match the colored film in the gauge cluster, as well as exterior LEDs matching their respective housing colors for legality.)

I will be purchasing mine here soon and doing the whole swap, so I'll post up before and after pics when they get here to show the difference. Hopefully this helps someone else out, since I know it took me quite a few days of hunting around online to come up with this and quadruple check myself to make sure the bulbs and quantities are all correct lol. A big thank you to @MeanTA (http://ltxtech.com/forums/member.php?u=3098) who helped me get this list started and put up with me asking the same crap over and over to make absolutely sure this was all correct.

Edit: So I just placed my order today for all of the LEDs, so in the interest of showing full disclosure of before and after, I got a bunch of stock bulb pictures for comparison once the LEDs get here. I also discovered that I have a few dead bulbs in the car anyway, so this will be great if even just to get all the lights working again lol. Here are the stock bulbs (you'll be able to notice the dead ones):

Got my foot well LEDs installed today, they look great and I like how easy it was to splice it into the dimmer wheel to control the brightness (dark green wire coming out of the back of the dimmer wheel). One pic with my garage door motor light on, one with the garage all lights out:

http://imageshack.com/a/img836/2497/z5cs.jpg
http://imageshack.com/a/img560/3950/fzct.jpg

And the finished result after swapping everything! It's kinda hard to see the magnitude of brightness through a phone camera, so I swapped between normal and night vision mode on my phone to grab the most amount of light, but the difference is definitely noticeable to the naked eye in person, trust me. It certainly makes the car look more modern with the brighter bulbs matching what some of the newer cars are getting for light output these days.

Those last 2 pics are with just the DRLs on in my dark garage, really gives you an idea of how bright they are lol.

Also, yes, that is indeed a trunk lamp added into my T-top holder area, the same that comes factory on all convertible 4th gens. I felt it needed to be added, since the dome light is so crappy thanks to the stupid smoked lens GM put on them. The best part is it's super easy to install and looks factory because it technically is! (Just not on a coupe.) The red LED in mine puts out an alright amount of light (red doesn't shine through those funky lenses the cars in the 90s were so fond of, but a bright white LED in there will put out a TON of light, I tested it with a spare bulb). Here's a quick install guide for anyone interested in adding one.

I pulled the dome light cover off to find what color wires I was dealing with and used a test light to find the power lead. Oddly, the red wire here is the ground and the white is the power, but they then go into the plug and come out reversed, so the blue-with-white-stripe is power and the white is ground:

http://s17.postimg.org/ib4srhrnz/20140223_145330.jpg

From here, there's no need to drop the headliner, the wires run across to the big plastic panel on the driver's side beside the rear seat. Just remove that panel and you should see the blue striped and white wire you need hanging above the subwoofer:

http://s17.postimg.org/9hdwae4pb/20140223_145347.jpg
http://s17.postimg.org/igd5ewocv/20140223_145519.jpg

I discovered through trial and error that you DO NEED TO run the power and ground from the trunk light to both of these, otherwise the trunk light will never turn itself off if grounded to the body of the car.

Conveniently, there's already a rectangle hole below the trunk latch underneath the carpet, since coupes and verts use the same piece back there, so I just sharpened my Gerber real good and peeked through the back/top of the trunk latch and cut from the interior side. Made an X cut from corner to corner in the rectangle hole, then straight cut the flaps it made to leave a nice clean rectangle cut in the carpet perfectly matching the hole in the bracket behind it. Ran 2 wires for power and ground (roughly 5 ft. long or so each) through the side of the bracket and through the hole:

http://s17.postimg.org/z1g6gtq33/20140223_160834.jpg
http://s17.postimg.org/niuh9oxn3/20140223_160943.jpg

Ran the wires through the wire loom up the driver's side under the carpet and panels and all to the blue and white wire above the sub, where I cut each one and used a butt connector to splice in the wires from the trunk light (I tried using butt splice connectors like this http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/attachments/technical-chat/143125d1332174556-cheap-free-mods-quick_splice.jpg, but the ones I had were too large and didn't get a good connection on the small 20-gauge wires here), then wrapped it all up good with electrical tape:

http://s17.postimg.org/z0au15dn3/20140223_161631.jpg

Back to the other end, 2 female quick disconnect ends attached to the wires and then time to plug in the light to test:

http://s17.postimg.org/n3j7gobpr/20140223_160735.jpg

All working, time to put everything back together and see how it turned out. Looks like it rolled out of the factory with it

No problem! Figured there had to be more interest in this mod, but the lack of info for us Firebird guys is disappointing. All the write ups on the other site are aimed at Camaros.

I did my Jeep dash in all LED's...I accidentally replaced the high beam with a normal power one. I feel like I'm in a rave every time I hit the high beams.

Hahaha I'm even going to add an LED strip to the foot wells in mine to boot. Definitely going to look evil at night time car shows when I'm done.

Lol I can find em if you can get me some good pics of the front and back of your gauge cluster like I showed above for mine (to know how many bulbs you need). I'll also need to know what bulbs go into your tail lights and how many, since I'm sure it's set up different than my Trans Am (4 tail light/blinker bulbs in mine). I believe the rest of the interior should be the same number of bulbs for the general stuff, but I'll try to dig and make sure.

Open your glove box and run your hand along the top of the opening right around the area where the door latches. You should feel a plunger there and the bulb is up behind it.

Updated first post with *Before* pics of all the stock bulbs. All interior pics are with the dimmer switch on maximum brightness. Also threw in pics of the comparison of my HID fogs vs. fogs + lows vs. lows only vs. hi-beams. Tomorrow I plan to work on getting the red LEDs for my footwells installed. Planning to hook mine up to the dimmer switch so they come on with the rest of the dash and I can control the brightness.

Installed foot well LEDs today and pics added to first post. Quite a difference in light output between the LEDs and the stock red bulbs in the gauges.

I'm not removing mine, but I've read that a Q-Tip dipped in rubbing alcohol should get the glue to release. You can find methods for that using Google.

Can't really find anything. For the door handle switches they said to drill it out. I did that but Idk if there is a better method. I don't think that will work for the HVAC Panel and such.

Woah woah, you shouldn't have to drill anything out here. The door handle lights only require unscrewing the cover panel behind the interior handle. HVAC just unbolts and pulls out.

How do you remove the red film on the door handle bezel? I know theres the screw to get it off the door. But once it's off the door, how do you get rid of the red film where the bulb goes in?

I found a couple different removal methods on the other Tech site. Some used razor blades to scrape it off, others used a Q-Tip and rubbing alcohol to get the glue to release, goo gone might work, too. I take it you want to switch to a different interior color, not all red?

Yeah going with cool white with a hint of blue looks like hids. I guess I gotta get overlays since I think I will mess it up

Blackbird96WS6
02-09-2014, 07:51 PM
Yeah, most of the threads I read recommended getting aftermarket overlays if you want to change colors. That should be nice and bright inside when done, just make sure it's not too much white to see out of the car when driving at night. Different colors are harder/softer on the eyes in the dark. I know red is a softer color and won't make you squint as much, easier for the eye to absorb. White is pretty bright though and harder to look past in the dark. White lights tend to black out everything around them for me at night, so that's why I stuck with a soft color. Just happens to be very convenient that red follows my car's red-on-black theme lol.

Wired to the dimmer wheel, dark green wire coming out of the back of the wheel. I grounded the driver side to one of the bolts holding the steering column. I grounded the passenger side to one of the bolts in the bar just below the glove box. Had to extend the passenger side power wire about 6" to make it back over to the dimmer wheel.

So last night got almost the whole car done, only things I have left to swap are the front turn signals, front sidemarkers, and the flasher. Ran into an issue with the 5 WLED-RHP5 bulbs that are the main back light and the 2 WLED-GHP5 blinker bulbs not working in the instrument cluster, after looking at them closely, it looks like the LED contacts are on the broad flat side front and back, while the contacts on the bulb bases are on the thin sides, so no circuit is being made... Justin is going to pull his cluster and check his (since he knows his work, I sent him pics of mine to compare) and get back to me. Hoping it's something simple I just did incorrectly, but we'll see. So far everything else looks great, though. All warning indicator bulbs in the instrument cluster work and are nice and bright, tail lights are brighter, brake lights brighter, reverse lights look much cleaner with a cool white light, license plate is lit up like daylight (wondering if that's a good thing... haha), kinda hard to tell the difference in the HVAC panel and dimmer switch, but it at least didn't get dimmer, the door lights are slightly brighter (not that they're real bright to begin with), console light is about the same as the stock bulb (just red now), glove box is damn bright, and the red map lights look awesome IMO. I need to look for a clearer plastic cover for the hatch light, mine's kinda dark and hazy, so the red doesn't come through very well. If I take the cover off, it puts out a great amount of light. I'll start posting up pics as soon as I get everything working, don't want to post incomplete pics lol.

Justin confirmed for me that I do have the wrong version of bulbs for my gauges. Weird thing is I got the same part number he did, but they sent me a different version of the bulb than what he got. I'll get back on their site later to see if I can find the version he ordered or not, but in an awesome act of generosity, he's sending me his that do work so I can finish mine up. Huge THANK YOU to MeanTA.

I got my flasher installed and verified the blinkers are working, but will have to do the front blinkers tomorrow. About to go see Stone Sour tonight lol.

The interior is actually real cheap and easy to do. I swapped out my cluster and overhead lights in about 20 minutes. I really wish I had better pictures. But it looked amazing. And the red really popped. My old phone took real bad night pics. So it didn't do it justice.

Yeah the interior is fairly cheap, the huge cost comes from how expensive the brake lights and reverse lights are, plus the LED flasher to make the blinkers work. $200 just on the ass end of the car lol. It does look much better though so far, once I get the gauges working and my dirty ass car cleaned up, I'll get good pics of everything.

I found my mistake in ordering the gauge cluster backlight LEDs! The stock socket base will not work with the wedge type LED bulbs, so you have to order replacement socket bases for the wedge type LEDs. I feel dumb for missing this, but hey, my mistake benefits everyone else so you don't make the same one lol. Added the part numbers to the original list.

Got the front turn signals and daytime running lights installed. Found an easy way to do it for any of you guys with relatively skinny forearms like me lol. Just manually raise the headlights all the way, then stick your hand in underneath and you can get both bulbs on both sides pretty easily. Now just waiting for those gauge LEDs to arrive and I'll get pics up. Almost done!

Found a small error in quantity and fixed it in my original post. Needed to add 2 extra side marker bulbs (WLED-RHP5). Also found a cool add-on by browsing around on here and discovered that convertible tops had a trunk light below the trunk release, so ordered one off eBay and plan to add one to my T-top car to put more light into the trunk area (red LED of course lol).

Ordered one more of the same bulb for the dome light to put in my trunk light add-on now that it's here. Also discovered and edited my above posts with the fact that superbrightleds does indeed sell a proper socket base for the wedge type LEDs to replace the stock socket base that isn't working for me. So I was right the first time, just missing one extra part lol.

Lol that's my goal, want to make this guide foolproof when I'm done so nobody else has to mess with this for almost a month to get everything right.

Alrighty boys and girls, just got the last pieces in today to finish this all up! I will be installing the gauge LEDs and trunk lamp LED as soon as I get off work in an hour, then once it gets dark I'll get pics of everything and post em up! Anyone interested in the trunk lamp install, should I do the write-up here on how I installed that or do you guys want me to make a different thread for how to install?

Well, everything's installed and working, but I have some bad news. The socket bases I ordered don't work for some damn reason, even though MeanTA and I ordered the same exact part numbers (just years apart in doing so), we ended up with 2 different things for both bulbs and sockets. Here's a pic to illustrate, the top is what I ordered and doesn't work, the bottom is what MeanTA ordered and works perfectly:

27353

On the bottom side of the bases, you can see a slight difference, too. The top left is the wrong one I ordered, the bottom left and middle right are the ones MeanTA sent to me:

27354

So, all in all, I'm stumped and can't figure out wtf is wrong with them. My list is good for everything except the instrument panel backlight, blinker, and sockets. If anyone else knows what the right part number is for the sockets, PLEASE post up here and let us all know. In the meantime, I'm just glad mine's done lol. Will now work on posting finished result pics to the first post.

Headlights and fog lights are the only ones I did not do in LEDs. My fogs are already HIDs, but my headlights are currently stock. I'm saving up for a set of BlackbirdLightingSolutions' HID headlights.

http://www.blackbirdlighting.com/ is owned by blackbirdws6 here, I've always heard from anyone who's ordered his setups that they are top notch quality, which is why I intend to buy them lol. Would be dumb to go through all this effort and skimp on a cheapo HID setup that doesn't cut off right or put out the light properly.

Went back through and cleaned up the first post by hosting all pics to image sharing sites to take some of the load off here. Also should make it visible to all non-members as well.

So, I've gone and done the same thing and ended up with the "new" non-working socket bases. Is there a known solution to this?

Also, although you do say in your original post that your vehicle is a 96 TA, half of this guide is incorrect for the 98-02 gauge clusters and I ended up spending an additional $60 on bulbs I don't need for my 2002... It's not your fault, I was a little too gung-ho about it, buuut, it would be cool if you made that disclaimer for other morons like me, haha.

Yes, this was written for a Trans Am with a 93-96 style gauge cluster (assuming they are all 155 mph speedo clusters, or rather that the 155 clusters use the exact same bulbs as the lower speed clusters, I'm not sure of that). Sorry for the confusion!

I am not sure of an official solution at the moment for the different style bulb sockets they provide now. I ended up lucking out and getting the older style proper sockets from a friend who no longer needed his cluster. If you find one in your searches, please do post up and I'll be sure to edit this guide.

Just another all show no go bird

Alright! I figured out what people need in order to do this. First of all, I did this for a 2002 T/A. It should be identical to any 98-02 Trans Am, Firebird or Camaro, and likely the 93-97 model as well, but no guarantees.

Basically, you need the LED's that look like the one's MeanTA provided. I went on Ebay and found all 3 colors. The green ones are an opaque plastic base and not clear like the blue and red, but they still worked. I haven't received the red ones yet but they were identical to the pic and to the blue one I ordered (that worked) so I'm making the assumption that they'll work fine too.

These links won't last, but for now you'll be able to see product pictures:

Blue: http://www.ebay.com/itm/331196854179?item=331196854179&viewitem=&vxp=mtr
Green: http://www.ebay.com/itm/310758545605?item=310758545605&viewitem=&vxp=mtr
Red: http://www.ebay.com/itm/321413206373?item=321413206373&viewitem=&vxp=mtr

The other thing is that the stock socket bases worked fine, you don't need to order new ones. The total cost from Ebay (including shipping, so it will vary) was $60.

All were 194 type bulbs for the 98-2002. I have no idea how to change the warning indicators, they aren't obvious bulbs like the 93-97, they may even already be led's. I can't tell. They look like they might be soldered to the board.

The brights indicator on the 98-02 model is a 194 type bulb, not the same as the 93-97.

Feel free to add this information to your write-up.

EDIT: Quick update. The red bulbs came and they worked fine. Although I did find out that for some reason, some of the bulbs didn't come on. Opening it back up and rotating them 180 degrees fixed them. Same for my rear side markers. Really strange.

Just another quick update on the differences between models as I do all this for my 2002. The front turn signal bulbs you indicate do not work for the 2002 trans am with the stock flashers, however they will work with EL12 flashers by Tridon/Novita Tech. Inc. Superbrightled's recommends a different part number for the bulb (a "CK" variant? I don't know, it might not need the flashers) but the bulbs you listed here work just fine as long as you also change the flashers.

You need to change the flasher to an electronic

nopower1320
01-19-2016, 02:19 PM
What's that? I have no experience with electronic stuff so I'm in the dark in this. EDIT I looked it up, will the EP34 from Auto Zone work?

Dan

The flasher is located under the steering column. Has a couple wires going to it.

I have no idea if ep34 will work. I think that's what I tried and it didn't work. I did mine over the summer and forgot

Ep34 will not work. That is a 3 terminal. You need a 2 terminal one
