Just read through the 'new LT1 engine' thread. And this post was make about DI...I didn't wanna take that conversation off course, so I am putting it here.
Direct Injection is gonna be the next big thing to come to a lot of cars.
I totally agree with this. I have been thinking about this for a bit- since I have owned a couple of diesel VW's. I wonder how long before they have compression fired Gasoline powered engines? Anyone think that will happen?

i just wonder if the direct injections going to hit a wall when it comes to high rpm and fuel needs.

I don't see that being a issue for DI. Lambo ferrari ect. are pushing there engines north of 8000 rpm with DI

hm, guess they got it figured out. be curious what the aftermarket has to do though.

No need to spin 8k when you can make power at 6k.

My main concern with DI still is carbon build up on the back of the valves. If you do some digging you'll find this is a notorious by product of having DI.

Keeping up on the maintenance should take care of these problems, but most will not.

There have been documented cases of HORRIBLE carbon deposits in 5K miles on the DI stuff though. There were some VERY telling pics and info to be had at a Napa class I took last year. It was truly shocking how quickly the deposits build up. I'm talking a 5K mile brand new vehicle, serviced on time, valves being unable to completely shut due to deposits bad.

I have seen the pictures and I am sure that I have taken the same class. I didn't hear the 5k and thought it was around 30-40k.

I specifically remember the 5K because that REALLY struck me as quick. One of those things that keyed me in that I really found thought provoking.

Having dealing with di engines for the last two year I have not seen one torn down due to carbon build up in my region

From what I've read, ford and gm have made extensive changes to the pcv and egr systems which reduce or eliminate the carbon deposits.

Yeah, part of the Gen5 design included extensively redesigning the PCV system so that it would capture the oil before it gets to the valves. Regardless, IMHO, all direct injected engines need to come with oil catch cans inline with the PCV and intake manifold. I have one on my DI 3.4L v6 for my 2012 Camaro and I capture about a cup of oil between each oil change.

Glad to see they rectified the issue then considering the way the industry is shifting towards DI. It's definitely good poop. I'm waiting for someone to make a stepper for the gearing in the DI Pump so you can crank the pressure higher and get more out of the injectors. I see that as an easy way to increase fuel capacity so long as you're not passing the rating for PSI on the lines/injectors themselves.
