View Full Version : LT1 Swap into a 1989 Sonoma
Hey guys, I posted this on the swaps area also, but we're swapping an LT1 into my '89 Sonoma, and we've already got everything figured out, just need to know if anyone has any idea on what to do the cooling system and headers, because we have to have the headers wrap around the steering shaft. Thanks in advance!

Possibly shorty block hugger headers.
NightTrain66 knows an S10 with a swap in it, maybe he can be some more help.
I ran an OEM 95 Camaro radiator from the parts store in my '70 Nova swap.

His sonoma is turbo, headers go forward. Haha

There are plenty of 1st gen S10 swap headers around but they're mostly shorties. There are also some long tubes available but they only fit with certain transmissions.

Maybe it wasn't born a turbo.

We have at least one or two newer members that joined recently that have s10s swapped over. Go thru the INTRODUCTION threads till u find em amd reach out.
LTXtech.com is my drug.
Right on. Those were the only problems we were running into. We've got the motor and trans, wiring harness and computer, motor mounts, and drive shaft all figured out, just didn't know what we needed to do for cooling system and headers. Thanks guys!

Troys Sonoma started out as a V6 then, added nitrous, then a 350 LT1 6 speed, then N/A 383, then solid roller, then Turbo, then TH 350, then glide. Hell, there might have even been a 4L80 at some point, I cant remember.
The order might not be correct but the truck has changed a lot over the many years he has owned the truck.
I know he liked the 1 3/4 headers MUCH better than the 1 5/8 shorty or block huggers.
Not sure when he upgraded radiator but I would get an alu radiator made for the V8/LT1 swap from griffin, etc. You "might" be able to get by with the stock radiator depending on how long you sit in traffic, how long you stay in it (Auto cross compared to drag racing, etc), etc,. Make sure and get a 160 T-stat and good tuning and run super unleaded regardless of what cooling system you use.

Hope this helps some . . . . .

I would run the sanderson swap headers that have 1 3/4 primarys and 3" collectors. I have these on my 93 S10 with a 95 vette LT1/T56 and they fit pretty good.
For the radiator, get the HD one from an 88 or so corvette, it fits in the forward position up inside the core support and will keep things cool with a good electric fan.

This rad has been used for alot if years and works well to keep things cool.
