Metallica being my favorite band, and hearing some of the riffs and new song off their newly long awaited album "Death Magnetic", I am really stoked for tomarro (the release date), and picking up a copy of it.

I am a die hard fan, and have been since I was a young teenager. But since all the band went through with Jason leaving, and James going through re-hab, and their last album being the worst waste of talent in music history (St Anger). This album is really the deciding factor IMO if Metallica has what it takes to press on and continue producing good new music. After their last flop of an album, a lot is riding on this. If it is a failure, I fear, so are they as far as making good new music goes.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that the parts from the album I have heard, are as good as the whole thing!!

Even though I am a die hard fan, I have been very busy lately, and wasn't aware it was already for sale (besides on i-tunes). I just saw an add in the paper that it would be on sale Friday (Best Buy add).

Well, glad to hear someone else thinks it turned out well!!

I'll check it out but my tastes for music have changed quite a bit since the last Metallica CD was released.

I've had it for about a week and to be totally honest, it's leaps better than St. Anger. It's still nowhere near as good as anything from the 80's but, it is a step in the right direction.

I agree with some of the posts made so far. It is better than St.Anger, but on par with load and re-load. Since Mustaine left, Metallica just hasn't been able to recover. The recycling of riffs has come to an end, and it seems, they are just going to be another "Ac/Dc, or The Rolling Stones" Doomed to an eternity of replaying their hits. Which is fine with me though. I would totally pay to see them play all the good shit, sans St.Anger+ material.

The wife loves Micheal Jacksons music, but dislikes him as a person. I guess perhaps I am somewhat the same to Metallica as it doesn't really matter if they were bad people, I'd still enjoy their music.

Bob, thanks for the offer. If I had to wait any longer, I would probably hit you up. But I should have it in a few hours

This has been brought up a lot on Metallica's website. A lot of guys are like you and really prefer their stuff made before the black album. There are others that prefer the black album and after. Then there seems to be a rare breed like myself that enjoys both equally. If anything, I prefer the black album and later, but some of their old stuff (like in MOP) was wicked :metal:

I think the Black album is there greatest achievement. That's me personally though. They go through a wide range of emotion and it really shows. Like it or not, that album released Metallica into the mainstream, and still continues to be the biggest seller of their catalog.

I also really like Load and Re-Load. I really just don't like St.Anger.

I also really don't like how Metallica refuses to give credit to Dave for all the riffs they use/borrow.

I'm a fan of both bands. I really honestly believe, and if you look at the facts you may too, that after Dave left, Metallica kept his riffs, and used as many as they could, to a point. St. Anger was that point. Load and Re-load both are included in this, but those were not nearly as bad as St.Anger.

All I know is, Megadeth is still putting out music that sounds like Megadeth, where-as Metallica seems to have gotten lost with their sound.

I mean no disrespect to Metallica, or any of their fans. This is just my opinion. :metal:

Got it. I'm a Pre-black fan myself. Though Load and re-load had a few good tracks. I refused to listen to St Anger just due to my friends feedback alone, Garbage.

I'm curious to see how they have gotten back to their roots.

Is it me or did anyone think Dave was sort of a pussy in 'Some kind of Monster'?

I think he was purposely portrayed this way..Don't get me wrong, Dave had a life altering experience and changed his whole perspective on shit. Same as James.

I agree. The Black album was great, and was easily the most popular album they produced. Load is my favorite. St Anger was terrible. I tried, and tried for months to get anything out of it, but I gave up, just plain angry with how terrible it was. :(

Megadeath still sounds like Megadeath, and I enjoy their music as well. But they're no Metallica.

I need this album!!!!!!!!:metal:

YES YOU DO!!!!

I picked it up today!! I actually got really lucky, and got it from a local rock radio station that was giving 10 free copies away! I listened to it all the way home from work, and I have to say I am VERY impressed! This new CD is friggin awesome! I didn't get a chance to listen to every track, but I listened to Unforgiven 3, Judas Kiss, and a couple others, and it was awesome!! I am so pumped they put out another great album. This gives me great hope that they will continue to make good new music in the future!

MAN, what a great CD though! :metal:

I got really lucky. I found the CD at the mall in a store called "hot topic" for only $5!!!! The guy working there said it was a one day sale.

So far Unforgiven III is my favorite, but I haven't heard them all yet.

True, I hear ya on that.. I still like to give em a chance though, call me crazy :D

..And Justice For All has my vote for the best album, other than maybe the obvious choices of Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning.

They have indeed changed their sound after the black album. However, they changed it a few times before as the black album certainly isn't like kill em all. Like I said before, most people either like the new Metallica (black album on), or old Metallica (previous to the black album). Personally I enjoy both (with the exception to St Anger).

I think the only way Metallica could continue to be successfull in putting out new popular music would be continue to change as well. Although I really am digging the style in which Death Magnetic is done :D

See I would like to disagree. I think that Metallica has a very strong fan base. With such a strong fan base, and as much money as they have made, they should just keep doing what works for them and the fans. It seems like they keep changing so they can appeal to new audiences, which is fine, but at the same time they are taking a big shit on all the people who have followed them for so long.

At this point in their career's I think they should be moving past the "let's make money" phase.

They don't care about money. They care about the future of the band. Whether you believe they should or shouldn't change is irrelevent to the fact that they are changing, and have been ever since the Black album, and then again with Load and Reload, and again with S&M, and then into the different St Anger (that was a bad change), but then again with DM.

There no doubt they could play the pre black album songs only at concerts and still be successfull, and sell out stadiums. But as they see it "where would the future go?". If they continue to put out new music, they will continue as a band that can withstand the changes of time.

Everyone has their own opinion, which is cool. IMO, there's a difference between putting out new music versus trying to re-invent themselves to appeal to a wider audience. Many times the band doesn't have a lot of choice though. There is often a lot of pressure/influence from the music company who wants to come in and "help" in order to increase profits. Usually if you see a band's albums creeping closer and closer to "mainstream", there's a producer behind the scenes pushing them that way.

Whoever is pulling the strings on Metallica to change or not to change, they are changing and have been since the late 80's. FWIW, I think DM is a nice combo with an older Master of Puppets style tangled into a new change.
