So I was painting yesterday and I had a lot of problems. I dont have a ton of auto painting experience and everything I have learned is trial and error and what I have read online. This is the first time I have had any problems like this one. when I was painting yesterday the paint came out really weird. Try as I might I could not get the paint to properly atomize. It came out in large drops I tried making several adjustments to the gun and regulator with no success. I used the same paint a few weeks earlier and it layed down perfectly with the same gun. I cleaned the gun right before using it. When I laid down the clear coat it almost looked like rain very small rain drops. Its covered in orange peel. I am going to sand it all down and redo it. The gun is a low end devilbis that is pretty old now. The paint was duplicolor and was a lacquer . I didn't run a drier I know its bad but it didn't do this last time so I thought I was good. I just didn't want to take apart the other compressor and move the drier to this one. Whats your guys opinions? what cause said symptoms?

What was the temp of the area and the paint? Cold paint will act that way as will a cold area. I had the temp and humidity change on my when we were painting pops station wagon and 1/2 of the car got orange peel really bad. I was shooting single stage poly urethane, so we were able to wet sand and buff it smooth. A inline drier is a good idea, I use a chepo inline desiccant filter and it works well.

I thought you would've been ok , just reread, thought you were painting today. The 78' weather was nice. My first thought was cleanliness, but you addressed that. Was the car inside overnight? Turn on a heater or anything before starting?

I cant say an exact temp of the room but I will say around 75 degrees. I brought the room up to temp with a gas heater then used and electric heater to keep the room ad temp. the paint might have not been the same temperature as the room but I doubt it was off drastically. It just came out of the gun so weird I have never seen it spray like it did. I wish I had taken pictures. I even tried thinning out the paint more and that didn't help.
Sorry I was painting the gas tank and fenders of my motorcycle. I cleaned everything with rubbing alcohol and then used a tack cloth to finish it off. I also drained the compressor tank prior to use.

Cold paint means higher viscosity. I like to let the paint sit in the area we use 24 hours with the car prior to painting to let it acculmate. Laqur is pretty thin by nature, so I dunno for sure. It has been a long time since i used itbut if it gets thick it will spatter pretty bad. When you cleaned the gun did you pull out the needle valve and blow it clean along with the nozzle?

Sounds like exactly what I dealt with when doing my car the last time. Mine ended up being caused by water in the lines, but I also found that the lid to the hopper had plugged up in the little orificein the top which after a few minutes of spraying, caused a sort of vacuum in the hopper

I will definitely make sure the paint is the same temp as the room next time. I cleaned the gun with the thinner and let air dry. I usually disassemble it and put the parts in a coffee can and fill with the thinner and sit for about ten minutes then wipe down.

I didnt not check the hopper vent. Honestly it seemed like it was starving for paint.

I would do all that has been mentioned. With the gun in good order, dry air , and good temps you should be fine.

. I did everything you guys said and still had problems. I noticed the paint was running out of the end of the gun and said f it. I bought a cheap gun at northern tools. Then every thing was good so i'm gonna buy a rebuild kit for the old gun and see what happens
