After a job interview today, I was going over to my friends place to hang out. While there I was going to cut some pieces I needed to use a miter saw for since I've warped my plastic hand miter box and don't have a saw.

I get there, we're talking, and he says "Oh, you brought hte wood right?" I said yeah, and he says "well, I'm NOT going to be able to let you do the cuts on my dads saw (he was borrowing from his pops as he doesn't have one either)." My heart dropped because I really wanted to crank out these two display cases I'm building.

He reaches under his very large tree and slides a big box out (my back was turned) and says "But I can let you take this home and do the cuts on it."

I was speechless. But the story behind it is better.

He had apparently been looking at this exact saw to get me for Christmas anyway. His wife did her research and found this one to be one of the better value's for not a lot of money, and got it for him for Christmas so he'd have his own. We have a HF in town so why she ordered on line I don't know, but it was delivered as you see. And he was home. Surprise ruined. So they talked it over and instead of returning it just decided to give it to me instead. Pretty awesome I think.

Can't wait to use it. Tomorrow!!!!! Just need to figure out if I need to swap blades or not for something a little finer.

I bought the Diablo fine tooth blade for mine when I did laminate flooring. Super smooth cuts.

Yeah, I am already planning a blade upgrade when I can afford it. Have a LOT of other obligations ahead of that though.

Yep. Good friends like he is are hard to come by. Though I had another one (who was my best man even) and I had to cut him off cold turkey cause he backstabbed me. Not this one though.

Well, here's the fruits of the new tool so far:

Untouched corners. Only sanded.

Without plexiglass. The missing piece on the left will be bonded to the top of the plexiglass to finish things off.

With glass and cover piece layed in place:

Awesome work man. What do you think about making something like that for diecasts?

What size die casts? Small ones would be easy, 1/24th probably, but 1/18 scale would be a little more challenging. What did you have in mind?

Always looking for interesting ways to display my diecasts. I would imagine something like that with the acrylic cover would keep dust out. Right now my collection just sits out in the bookcases getting dusty and such. Would be cool to see something that would angle the diecasts slightly. Probably would be too bulky to do.

Well like I said its doable but yeah, for the 1/24 and 1/18 that's getting pretty wide for hanging on the wall. For the 1/64 hot wheels sized stuff.....that could be done and kept narrow enough to hang. I'd just router a wider block of wood on an I Cline with a lip so they're angled down some and the rest of the construction could essentially remain the same. Something you want me to look in to?

That would be pretty cool, I've been trying to figure out a way to properly display all my Hot Wheels at our new place. Everything's still in the package though, unopened. Not sure if that fits in with what your idea for it is.
